Miao Miaomiao kept looking back every few steps, yet she didn’t see anyone behind her.

But the more she walked, the more fear crept into her heart, and she unconsciously quickened her pace.

A gust of sand blew past, stinging her eyes for a moment.Full novel: 1970s: On the Seventh Night After My Husband’s Death, I Dreamed of His Superior — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Just as Miao Miaomiao was about to rub them, a man suddenly rushed up from behind, clamped a hand over her mouth, and swiftly dragged her into the cornfield.

“Mm—mm—let me go…”

Her eyes filled with terror as she watched the sky grow smaller and smaller beneath the cover of the corn stalks.

It’s over. If she was dragged all the way in, she’d truly be screaming to the heavens with no one to hear.

“Mm—mm—mm…”

She was terrified, struggling with all her might, but the man behind her was incredibly strong, locking her arms so she couldn’t escape.

“Stop struggling. Be my woman, heh heh,” the man said.

That lecherous, greasy smoker’s voice made her nauseous.

Miao Miaomiao refused to give up. In a flash of inspiration, she suddenly dropped her weight, letting her body fall heavily downward.

“So you want to do it right here? Heh heh, that’s pretty exciting,” the man laughed obscenely when he saw her fall, immediately starting to undo his pants.

Bang!

Instead, Miao Miaomiao rolled over swiftly, grabbed a brick nearby, and smashed it straight into his head.

“Ah—!”

The man screamed, clutching his forehead as blood slowly trickled down the side of his head.

But he didn’t pass out.

Taking advantage of the moment, Miao Miaomiao scrambled to her feet and ran.

Thankfully, he hadn’t dragged her too far in. From here, she could quickly reach the main road.

“How dare you smash me, you little bitch! You’re asking for death!” The man shoved aside the corn stalks and chased after her, shouting as he ran. “When I catch you, you’re dead meat—I’ll screw you till you beg for death!”

Miao Miaomiao ignored him and ran for her life.

Before long, she burst out of the cornfield onto a dirt path. The man followed, slowing his pace as he leered. “Heh heh, slut, stop running. Let me take good care of you…”

“Don’t… don’t come any closer…”

Backing away in fear, Miao Miaomiao suddenly intercepted a passing cyclist.

“Comrade, please, save me!”

She grabbed hold of his handlebars, pleading.

The stranger glanced at her, then quickly got back on his bike and rode away.

“You… don’t go, comrade—!”

Miao Miaomiao stamped her feet in desperation.

She hadn’t expected people here to be so cold and indifferent.

Seeing this, the thug cackled with delight. He’d been a little wary before, but now he grew bolder.

“Heh heh heh, little lady, you’re not getting away,” he said, rubbing his hands as he slowly approached.

“Don’t come closer! Someone help—catch the thug!”

Just then, another bicycle came riding by. Without thinking, Miao Miaomiao rushed forward and knocked it to a stop.

The rider fell off and took a moment to steady himself. “Miaomiao?”

It turned out to be Li Sanchuan.

“Accountant Li, it’s so good to see you!” Miao Miaomiao grabbed him in relief, but remembering his past cowardice, the hope in her heart quickly dimmed.

Seeing that she knew the man, the thug panicked slightly. His eyes rolled, and he quickly changed his tune. “Hey, woman, how can you do this? Didn’t you say before that you only liked me? And now you’re hugging another man?”

He put on an act, pretending to be close to her.

“Is that true?” The foolish Li Sanchuan actually believed him and lowered his head to ask her.

What an idiot!

Miao Miaomiao was so angry she couldn’t even explain.

“Yes, yes, it’s true, comrade,” the thug said, still eyeing her greedily, waiting for Li Sanchuan to leave so he could strike again.

He’d been somewhat afraid earlier, but seeing how one passerby had left without a word, his sense of luck had grown stronger.

Miao Miaomiao knew this couldn’t go on. If she waited, Li Sanchuan might really be fooled into leaving. She was alone and weak—she couldn’t risk being left behind.

Thinking fast, she leaned against Li Sanchuan and scolded the thug, “You filthy hooligan, you’d better leave while you still can. My Brother Sanchuan is a police officer from the town station. Be careful he doesn’t throw you in jail!”

“Huh?”

The thug’s legs trembled. A police officer—that was not someone to mess with.

“Uh… heh heh, sorry about that…”

He softened immediately and was about to apologize and leave when Li Sanchuan suddenly asked curiously, “Hey, when did I become a police officer? I’m just a sent-down educated youth. Miaomiao, did you mistake me for someone else?”

What?

Miao Miaomiao turned to stare at him in disbelief, her eyes nearly rolling to the back of her head.

“Heh heh, so you’re just a little educated youth,” the thug sneered. His family had some influence—he wasn’t afraid of powerless students at all.

He suddenly pulled out a small knife and pointed it at Li Sanchuan. “Kid, hand her over, or I’ll make you regret it!”

“Ah…”

At the sight of the knife, Li Sanchuan’s legs went weak. Cold sweat poured down his face as he glanced at Miao Miaomiao.

Oh no—was he going to run again?

Miao Miaomiao didn’t give him the chance. She grabbed tightly onto his handlebars. “Li Sanchuan, don’t leave me. I’m begging you.”

“Miaomiao…”

Li Sanchuan clutched the handlebars, desperately wanting to flee.

“I’ll count to three. One… two… three…” the thug began counting smugly.

Li Sanchuan couldn’t escape even if he wanted to. Sweat streamed down his face.

“Hey, Sanchuan, what are you standing around here for?”

Another bicycle caught up. The educated youth Liang Junjie stopped and called out to them.

Seeing that there were now two men, the thug realized he was outmatched and began to chicken out, preparing to slip away.

Miao Miaomiao reacted instantly and pointed at him. “Comrade Liang, that hooligan tried to assault me and even pretended to be my man!”

“Is that so?”

Righteous anger flared in Liang Junjie. He tossed aside his bike and jumped forward, grappling with the thug.

Seeing someone finally willing to help, Miao Miaomiao was so moved she burst into tears.

She didn’t just stand by—she rushed over, bit down hard on the thug’s hand, and snatched the knife away.

Liang Junjie was skilled. In just a few moves, he subdued the thug and pinned him to the ground.

“Comrade, don’t worry. I’ll take him to the police station right now.”

“No.”

Miao Miaomiao raised a hand to stop him, crouched down, and looked at the man.

“Tell me—who sent you to do this?”
