Lin Fengxia unleashed her full force, spitting everywhere.

“If I die, I’ll drag you down with me as a vengeful ghost!”

“You think giving me drugs would work?”

“Dream on!”

Her curses were horrendous. Wang Dazhuang hadn’t wanted to intervene, but she had started cursing his ancestors up to the eighteenth generation.

Enraged, Wang Dazhuang slammed Lin Fengxia to the ground.

“Filthy woman, shameless!”

“You’re asking for death, don’t blame me for dealing with you!”

Fengxia’s head was still dizzy; the impact sent pain shooting through her tailbone.

The shock jolted her, and she became much more alert.

She tried to push herself up, but before she could sit, Wang Dazhuang grabbed her by the neck.

He forced her back to the ground and snarled, “Bitch, I gave a bride price, and you still won’t obey me, yet you dare to curse me!”

He glanced around.

This was a wild vegetable field — nobody lived nearby for miles.

While Wang Dazhuang looked around, Lin Fengxia summoned all her strength to scratch his arm.

He cried out in pain as deep red scratches appeared on his skin.

Taking advantage of his momentary loosened grip, she rolled and crawled forward.

Soon, Wang Dazhuang grabbed her ankle, dragging her across the ground.

She struggled, trying to crawl forward.

But he was a man, and with the effects of the herbal drug on her, she had no strength to escape.

He straightened her body and pressed down on her legs. “Bitch, still trying to run!”

“You’re not going anywhere. Better behave!”

“If I hurt you, I’ll feel sorry for you!”

He sneered as he began pulling at her collar.

Rip! The fabric over her chest tore, letting cold air rush in.

Fengxia regained some awareness and spat in Wang Dazhuang’s face.

He was so focused on her exposed chest that he ignored everything else.

Seeing that all her struggles were futile, Fengxia’s mind sank into despair.

She had just been reborn — was she going to die again?

She felt frustrated. She should have stored some weapons in her space.

If she had even one weapon now, she wouldn’t be in this helpless situation.

Just as she thought her end was near, rustling sounds came from the vegetable field nearby.

A shadow suddenly appeared, like a lifeline to her.

“Help!”

“Help!”

Her voice trembled with desperation.

The shadow approached, and Wang Dazhuang paused, sensing something. He turned to see a tall figure.

“Don’t get in my way, scram!” he warned.

“Or after I deal with her, I’ll deal with you too!”

Wang Dazhuang was in the middle of his excitement when someone interrupted, making him irritable.

He shouted, then noticed the person was still standing there.

Under the moonlight, he saw the newcomer was a tall, strong man.

The man exuded an imposing aura, eyes sharp and piercing, as if he could burn a hole through Wang Dazhuang’s face.

Before Wang Dazhuang could curse, the man struck the back of his neck with a knife-hand chop.

Wang Dazhuang stiffened, then his eyes rolled back, and he fainted.

Fengxia looked at the man under the moonlight, then at Wang Dazhuang lying on the ground, and let out a relieved smile. “G-Great…”

Soon after, she lost consciousness.

When she woke, her eyes hadn’t even opened yet, but she heard the sound of a door opening and footsteps.

Her eyelashes fluttered as a woman’s excited voice reached her ears: “You’re awake! You’re awake!”

Fengxia opened her eyes to see an unfamiliar ceiling.

Following the voice, she saw a cheerful older woman holding a bowl of medicine.

“Little girl, is there anywhere that still hurts?”

“If you feel unwell, just tell me — I’ll get a doctor for you.”

Fengxia felt weak all over, but not in pain.

She shook her head. “Thank you, ma’am. Where is this?”

The place looked decent, but before fainting, she remembered seeing a man.

“Oh, little girl, don’t be afraid.”

“Captain Qin brought you here and captured that bad guy who hurt you.”

“This is the military base. You can rest here safely.”

The woman brought the bowl to her lips; Fengxia struggled to swallow.

The bitter medicine made her already tasteless mouth worse, but she drank it all in one go.

The woman praised her repeatedly: “Very good!”

“I’ll go tell Captain Qin now. You just lie down and rest first.”

The woman left cheerfully.

Not long after, footsteps returned.

Fengxia looked up and saw a tall, long-legged man in military uniform.

He had sharp features, tanned skin, and bright, piercing eyes, radiating integrity.

At a glance, Fengxia knew he was a good person.

Their eyes met, and a glimmer of light shone in Qin Jianguo’s eyes.

He quickly came to her bedside, concerned: “Young lady, are you alright?”

Fengxia nodded weakly; her voice was dry and gravelly.

“Thank you.”

Qin Jianguo immediately offered her water.

She shook her head, thinking of Wang Dazhuang. “What about him?”

“He’s been locked up and hasn’t woken yet,” Qin Jianguo explained.

“You and him…”

Seeing Fengxia’s pale face, he remained silent.

Fengxia cleared her throat. “Captain Qin, he and I… we’re not a couple.”

She told him everything that happened with Wang Dazhuang.

Qin Jianguo’s expression darkened further.

“Comrade Lin, don’t worry.”

“When Wang Dazhuang wakes, he will be punished.”

“You have nothing to worry about. Now that it’s the New China, forced marriages aren’t enforced.”

“You did nothing wrong; the fault lies with your parents.”

“If you like, you can stay here as long as you want.”

He looked at her, seeking her opinion, a hidden hope in his eyes.

Lin Fengxia had never considered joining the military, so she was slightly stunned.

But staying here meant complete freedom from the Lin family.

Before she could respond, Qin Jianguo clasped his hands, straightened his body, and nervously said: “There are some vacant positions in the unit. If you want to stay, we can provide pay, lodging, and food just like ours.”

Fengxia no longer hesitated and agreed.

“That’s great!” Qin Jianguo said.

Seeing Fengxia’s slightly puzzled look, he quickly regained his composure. “Comrade Lin, you should rest well first.”

“If anything is uncomfortable, come to me.”

Fengxia nodded and let out a small, slightly painful laugh.

Her body was still weak.

Qin Jianguo stood by the bed, blushing, scratching the back of his head. “Comrade Lin… why… why are you laughing?”

Fengxia said, “I think you’re quite amusing.”

Qin Jianguo’s face turned even redder.

“Really?”

“Yes. Now, Comrade Lin, rest well!”

He dashed off hurriedly, slightly flustered.
