Milk and bread truly made the perfect pair!

Walking out of the kitchen, Shalma Hughes reached out a hand, feeling her way forward slowly in the dark.

She paused, wondering why the object she just brushed against felt somewhat soft and warm.Full novel: A Contract Marriage, a Dangerous Husband — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Startled, she hastily jerked her hand back and retreated several steps.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to,” Shalma said.

She couldn’t make out his face.

He was swallowed by the darkness, seemingly melting into the shadows.

At that moment, she sensed a dangerous aura radiating from him.

She needed to get out of there as quickly as possible.

He didn’t answer.

By the pale moonlight streaming through the window, Shalma saw he was still wearing a pair of crisp dress pants and handmade leather shoes polished to a mirror shine as he slowly approached her.

Her heart suddenly skipped a beat.

“Don’t come any closer, I already apologized to you, okay!

I’m going to sleep.

Goodnight!” Shalma clutched the bread and milk tightly in her hands, her beautiful eyes shimmering like stars.

With that, Shalma tried to walk around him.

But just as she brushed past him, her hand was suddenly grabbed.

The first thing that registered in Shalma’s mind was how freezing cold his grip was.

Even if I wanted to touch you today, I’m afraid I wouldn’t have the energy,” Julian Winslow said, his voice faint and laced with a hint of hoarseness.

Hearing his words, Shalma inexplicably blushed.

However, his icy hand told her something was wrong.

Breaking free from his hold, she jogged over to switch on the lights.

As soon as the room lit up, she saw that he was covered in a cold sweat and his face was deathly pale.

He slowly collapsed onto the sofa with his eyes half-closed.

He looked as though he were enduring an immense amount of pain, yet his handsome, elegant features remained surprisingly calm and composed.

Shalma hurried over and placed a hand on his forehead.

The skin was so blisteringly hot it felt like it would burn her palm.

“You have a fever.

I’m taking you to the hospital.”

As she finished speaking, Shalma leaned forward to help him up.

But Julian slowly opened his eyes and extended his long arm.

Her somewhat petite frame was instantly pulled into his embrace.

As she fell against his chest, he leaned close to her ear and murmured, “It’s fine.

It’s an old condition.

I’ll be alright after a short rest.”

Although they had shared physical intimacy before, resting against his chest like this—listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat while surrounded by his crisp, clean, and cool scent—made Shalma feel inexplicably dazed.

But she snapped back to reality a second later.

Struggling to her feet, she looked at him with an indifferent gaze.

“Since you refuse to go to the hospital, I’ll help you back to your room.”

As she bent down, Julian’s cool gaze fixed on the woman mere inches away.

“You don’t seem to care about the position of Head of Winslow Family at all, do you?” Seeing that she was actually wearing an old, faded pajama set, a flicker of emotion stirred in his heart.

He felt a pang of confusion. You are reading on g.com, the official source.

Was this woman right in front of him truly the same enchanting socialite who effortlessly navigated among the various men of Aethelgard?

Shalma blanked out for a split second upon hearing his question, but her face quickly shifted back into a coquettish, flirtatious expression.

“Could it be that you actually want to marry me?” she asked, her gaze turning seductively captivating.

Julian raised his freezing hand to caress her bright, beautiful face.

“If I really wanted to marry you, would you agree?” he asked in an apathetic tone.

Shalma smiled.

The moonlight spilled directly between the two of them.

She saw the icy aloofness and arrogance in his eyes, just as he saw the teasing mockery in hers.

“What a pity!

I have no interest in the position of Head of Winslow Family at all!

You should find someone else.

I’m going back to my room,” she said softly, standing up and turning her back to him.

Shalma had always known that Julian was not someone to be trifled with.

She didn’t want to linger any longer.

The relationship between them right now should be crystal clear—that is, they had no relationship whatsoever.

She didn’t want to invite trouble, especially from him.

He was simply far too dangerous for her…

Picking up the bread and milk from the side, Shalma returned to her own room without looking back.
