The palace had fallen silent.

One by one, the lights in the royal chambers had gone dark, and the servants had retired to their quarters.

The guards continued their watch along the palace walls, their footsteps echoing softly through the distant corridors.Full novel: A Heart Of Hope — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Above the kingdom, the moon hung high in the night sky, bathing the gardens in a silver glow.

But Princess Evelyn could not sleep.

She lay awake in her chamber, staring at the ceiling as her thoughts wandered to the one person who had slowly begun to occupy every corner of her heart.

Edward.

She closed her eyes, but that only made the memories clearer.

His gentle smile.

The way he looked at her whenever they spoke.

The sound of his voice when he called her name.

And most of all, the feeling that came over her whenever they were together—a feeling she could neither explain nor control.

Evelyn had tried to convince herself that it was merely admiration.

She had told herself that Edward was simply someone she enjoyed speaking with, someone who treated her differently from the people who constantly surrounded her.

But she knew better now.

She was falling in love with him.

And that realization frightened her.

She quietly rose from her bed and walked toward the window.

Pulling the curtain aside, she looked toward the royal garden.

The moonlight made the trees appear almost magical.

Then she remembered the promise Edward had made during their last secret conversation.

“If ever you need to find me, come to the garden after moonrise.”

A small smile appeared on her lips.

Perhaps tonight was the night.

Evelyn quickly put on a simple cloak over her nightdress.

She covered her hair with a hood and quietly opened her chamber door.

She knew she was taking a risk.

If anyone discovered that the princess was leaving her chambers in the middle of the night to meet Edward, questions would immediately follow.

And those questions could destroy everything.

Still, her heart urged her forward.

She slipped through the quiet corridor, careful not to attract attention.

After passing through a small side entrance, she entered the royal garden.

The cool night air touched her face.

She breathed deeply.

The garden was beautiful beneath the moonlight.

White roses glimmered like little stars, and the fountain at the center whispered softly as water fell into its marble basin.

Evelyn looked around.

“Edward?”

There was no answer.

She walked farther along the garden path.

Then she heard footsteps behind her.

She turned.

Edward stood beneath an old oak tree.

He wore a dark cloak, and his hair was slightly tousled by the night breeze.

The moment their eyes met, Evelyn felt the familiar warmth spread through her chest.

“You came,” he whispered.

Evelyn smiled.

“You asked me to.”

Edward stepped closer.

“I wasn’t certain you would.”

“I wasn’t certain either.”

They both laughed softly.

For a moment, neither spoke.

They simply stood beneath the moonlight, looking at each other.

Edward was the first to break the silence.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Evelyn raised an eyebrow.

“Then why did you ask me to come?”

“Because my heart wanted you here.”

His words silenced her.

Edward lowered his gaze.

“I know this is dangerous, Evelyn.

Every time I see you, I tell myself that I must keep my distance.

I remind myself of who you are and who I am.”

He looked back at her.

“But then you smile at me, and every promise I made to myself disappears.”

Evelyn’s heart trembled.

“Edward…”

“I have tried to fight it,” he continued.

“I have tried to convince myself that what I feel is impossible.

But I cannot lie to myself anymore.”

He took a slow breath.

“I love you.”

The words hung between them.

Evelyn felt as though the entire world had suddenly stopped.

She had dreamed of hearing those words, but hearing them from Edward made them feel almost too beautiful to be real.

She stepped closer.

“You love me?”

Edward nodded.

“More than I should.”

A tear gathered in Evelyn’s eye, but she smiled through it.

“I was afraid to say it first.”

Edward stared at her.

“Why?”

“Because I am a princess.”

Her voice softened.

“And you are Edward.”

“I know.”

“My family will never see us as equals.”

“I know.”

“There are expectations surrounding me.

There are rules.

There are duties.”

“I know.”

Evelyn looked down.

“And yet…”

Edward gently lifted her chin.

“And yet?”

She met his eyes.

“And yet, when I am with you, none of those things seem important.”

Edward’s expression softened.

Evelyn placed her hand over his.

“I love you too.”

For several seconds, Edward said nothing.

He simply looked at her as though he had been given something precious he had never believed he could possess.

“You mean that?”

Evelyn smiled.

“With all my heart.”

Edward gently held her hand.

Their fingers intertwined.

The simple touch felt more intimate than any grand declaration.

They walked slowly through the garden together, keeping to the shadows where no guard could easily see them.

They spoke about everything and nothing.

Edward told her about his childhood, about the dreams he once had before life at the palace changed everything.

Evelyn listened with fascination, discovering parts of him she had never known.

She told him about her own dreams too.

“I have always wanted to see the world beyond the kingdom,” she confessed.

“Beyond the palace?”

“Yes.”

She laughed softly.

“Sometimes I feel as though everyone knows me as Princess Evelyn, but very few people know Evelyn herself.”

Edward stopped walking.

“I want to know her.”

She looked at him.

“Who?”

“The Evelyn who isn’t a princess.”

His voice was gentle.

“The Evelyn who laughs too loudly when she forgets herself.

The Evelyn who secretly loves wandering through the gardens.

The Evelyn who becomes stubborn when she knows she’s right.”

Evelyn laughed.

“You have noticed all that?”

“I notice everything about you.”

Her cheeks warmed.

Edward smiled.

“And I want you to know Edward too.

Not the man everyone sees in the palace.

Just me.”

“I already do.”

They continued walking.

Eventually, they reached a small stone bench beneath a flowering tree.

Moonlight slipped through the branches and fell across Evelyn’s face.

Edward sat beside her.

For a while, they simply watched the moon.

“This feels like a dream,” Evelyn whispered.

Edward looked at her.

“Then I hope we never wake.”

She rested her head gently against his shoulder.

Edward became still.

He was afraid that even the slightest movement might break the moment.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I feel safe here.”

“With me?”

“Especially with you.”

Edward smiled.

He slowly placed his arm around her.

Neither of them spoke.

The silence between them was no longer uncomfortable.

It was peaceful.

Their love did not need words every moment.

Sometimes, simply being together was enough.

But the happiness of the moment was shadowed by reality.

Evelyn suddenly lifted her head.

“What happens when people find out?”

Edward’s smile disappeared.

“I don’t know.”

“My father would never approve.”

“I know.”

“And my elder sister must marry before I can even consider marriage.”

Edward looked away.

“I don’t want to be the reason you lose your family.”

“You won’t be.”

“I could be.”

Evelyn reached for his hand.

“Edward, listen to me.

I don’t know what the future holds.

I don’t know whether our love will be easy or difficult.”

She squeezed his hand.

“But I know what I feel today.”

Edward looked at her.

“And what do you feel?”

“I feel that meeting you was not a mistake.”

His eyes softened.

“I feel the same.”

She smiled.

“We don’t have to know everything tonight.”

“No?”

“No.

We can simply love each other.”

Edward stared at her for a long moment.

Then he whispered, “That sounds like the most beautiful thing anyone has ever said to me.”

Evelyn leaned closer.

“Promise me something.”

“Anything.”

“Don’t give up on us because of fear.”

Edward hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“I promise.”

“And I promise that I won’t run from what I feel.”

The wind moved gently through the trees.

Edward reached up and carefully brushed a loose strand of hair away from Evelyn’s face.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

There was no palace.

No crown.

No royal expectations.

No distance between their stations.

There were only two hearts standing beneath the moonlight, discovering that they had become inseparable.

Edward leaned closer and gently pressed a tender kiss against Evelyn’s forehead.

She closed her eyes.

It was innocent, soft, and filled with a promise neither of them dared to say aloud.

When he pulled away, Evelyn smiled.

“I think I will remember tonight forever.”

“So will I.”

She looked toward the palace.

“I should go.”

Edward nodded reluctantly.

“Yes.”

Neither moved.

Finally, Evelyn stood.

Edward rose with her.

“Will I see you again?”

She smiled.

“Tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“After moonrise.”

Edward’s face brightened.

“I’ll be waiting.”

Evelyn turned to leave, but after a few steps she stopped.

She looked back.

Edward was still standing beneath the tree, watching her.

“Goodnight, Edward.”

“Goodnight, Evelyn.”

She disappeared into the darkness.

Edward remained there long after she had gone.

For the first time in his life, he understood that love could be both beautiful and frightening.

He knew the road ahead would not be easy.

He knew the walls surrounding Evelyn’s world were strong.

He knew that the kingdom might never accept a love between a princess and a man of his station.

But beneath the moonlight, he had heard her say the words his heart had been desperate to hear.

“I love you too.”

And that was enough to give him hope.

Meanwhile, Evelyn returned quietly to her chamber.

She closed the door behind her and leaned against it, pressing a hand over her heart.

It was beating faster than it ever had before.

She smiled to herself.

For the first time, she understood why people wrote songs about love.

Why poets stared at the moon.

Why hearts could feel full even when nothing had changed in the world around them.

She walked to her window and looked toward the garden.

Somewhere beyond those walls was Edward.

The man she was forbidden to love.

The man she could not stop loving.

Evelyn whispered his name.

“Edward.”

And beneath the same moon that watched over them both, two hearts remained connected by a secret that could either become the greatest love story the kingdom Boxton had ever known—or the greatest heartbreak.

But for tonight, they chose love.

For tonight, they chose each other.

And beneath the moonlight, their love began to grow stronger.
