Su Jinhui’s heart tightened. “What’s wrong? Are you still feeling unwell? Maybe you should stay a few more days for observation.”

“Just kidding.” Yan Li’an raised an eyebrow and straightened up, clearly mostly recovered.

She playfully thumped him, and he sucked in a breath sharply. “Oof!”Full novel: A Laid-Back 1970s Army Wife: Winning from Day One by Cleaning Out the Capitalist Family — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“Cut it out,” Su Jinhui said without looking back, seeing through his act.

He sighed helplessly. “You just hit my wound.”

“We’re here to help you!” Ah Hua rushed in from the ward door, snatching the bag from her hands.

Before Su Jinhui could thank her, she sensed something was off. “We?”

The next second, a dozen or so people had gathered at the ward entrance.

Military doctors, nurses, and even the head chef had come to see them off.

“Thank you all,” Su Jinhui felt a warm wave in her heart.

She deeply realized how close people’s hearts were in this era. Genuine kindness was truly precious.

In the past, she had witnessed too many unpleasant things in hospitals—children seizing their parents’ life savings, refusing to use it for medical treatment, or stealing a wife’s money to buy gifts for a third party. Back then, though technology was advanced, people’s hearts were distant and inscrutable.

But now, every face around her was smiling. She could truly feel everyone’s warmth and goodwill.

After everyone saw them to the hospital entrance, they spotted the army jeep waiting.

Only after they both got in did everyone wave goodbye.

Yan Li’an glanced at her meaningfully. She caught it and quickly looked away.

“Something on my face?” Su Jinhui instinctively rubbed her cheek.

He shook his head. “I didn’t expect you to fit in with everyone so quickly. Jinhui, you’re really impressive.”

He had worried that Su Jinhui might struggle to adapt to island life and, once the novelty wore off, want to leave. Then the marriage contract would have been a burden. But now, it seemed she was stronger and smarter than he imagined.

“It was just a lucky coincidence. I’m just happy I could help,” Su Jinhui said sincerely.

Yan Li’an suddenly thought of something. “You really like medicine, don’t you?”

“Of course! It’s my lifeblood. The only time I’m truly happy is when I’m studying medicine and saving lives… because I’m genuinely helping people…”

When she spoke about things she loved, especially medicine, Su Jinhui could talk endlessly.

Realizing she’d talked too much, she glanced at him and saw Yan Li’an listening attentively, eyes twinkling.

“Sorry… I babbled,” she said, scratching her head in embarrassment.

The image of her full of energy kept flashing in his mind, and he suddenly suggested, “Would you be interested in joining the army and becoming a real military doctor?”

This idea wasn’t baseless. From his own experiences and the military doctor’s high praise of Su Jinhui’s skills, he had a solid understanding of her abilities.

If she joined the military medical team, it would not only supply the troops with talent but also give Su Jinhui a place to fully apply her skills.

Of course, he also had a bit of a selfish motive…

The more stable Su Jinhui became on the island, the happier she would be. One day, she would have no regrets marrying him and would never think of leaving.

But for now, he had to consider her consent before he could proceed with any plans.

“Can I?” Su Jinhui asked excitedly, grabbing his arm.

She had confidence in her medical skills.

Her only shortcoming was not having formal medical credentials. If she were admitted prematurely, it would seem like she was using connections.

She believed in doing things properly. If she had to rely on underhanded methods, she’d rather wait until she could succeed on her own merits.

Yan Li’an nodded. “Of course. Even though you won’t disclose the source of your skills, your medical abilities surpass many. If you join the army, it will benefit both me and the soldiers.”

“Benefit you too?” Su Jinhui was adept at noticing key points.

Yan Li’an paused, realizing he had inadvertently revealed his honest thoughts. He quickly averted his gaze. “Yes… missions are dangerous. With you around, you might save me a few more times.”

“Don’t worry. Whether I become a military doctor or not, I’ll save you—we’re a couple, after all,” Su Jinhui said confidently.

She didn’t notice the smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, unable to be suppressed.

Yan Li’an was not one to say things without acting on them. As soon as he returned to the unit, he went straight to Regiment Commander Lin.

“Welcome back, Li’an.” Lin poured a cup of hot water onto the table.

Yan Li’an saluted again and then spoke seriously. “Jinhui saved my life. Her medical skills are probably unmatched in the unit.”

He was usually humble and rarely spoke so definitively, but Su Jinhui gave him that confidence.

Commander Lin understood immediately. “You want her to join the army as a military doctor? What does Jinhui think?”

“Yes, I’ve discussed it with her. She wants it too. I’m just not sure if the organization will approve,” Yan Li’an said honestly.

“Whether it’s her calmness in the operating room or her post-recovery care for you, her skills are beyond question. I’ll seriously consider your proposal,” Commander Lin analyzed seriously.

Yan Li’an added, “Also, her medicinal dishes are now officially used in the military hospital. Her knowledge of pharmacology is far beyond ours. I believe her joining would only bring benefits.”

“Well done! I’ll recommend her to the base hospital and military leadership. But the rest is out of our hands. Go home and let her prepare well—if this goes through, she’ll face a strict assessment.” Commander Lin patted his shoulder with satisfaction.

Yan Li’an hurried home to deliver the good news. “Commander Lin agreed, but she still has to pass an assessment to enter the base hospital. I believe you can do it.”

“I believe I can too!”

Su Jinhui was full of confidence, but she did not slack off.

In this era, she wanted her medical knowledge to be solid and precise.

After all, she had to answer in terms everyone could understand; otherwise, no matter how skilled she was, she couldn’t prove herself and could invite unnecessary misunderstandings.

Soon, she received notice that the assessment would begin the next day.

The challenge came sooner than she expected—she had thought she would have at least three days to prepare, but now she only had one night left.
