“Since that’s the case, the competition results still stand. This spot belongs to Comrade Su Jinhui,” Deputy Director Zhang said, his face beaming with a full smile.

Personally, he wanted Su Jinhui to join the military hospital more than anyone, not for any other reason, but for her excellent medical skills.

“How is she qualified to be a doctor at the military hospital? Are you really free of personal bias or insider influence?” Wang Erlei gritted his teeth, his face dark.

“You have a point; a doctor’s position may indeed not suit her,” Deputy Director Zhang squinted slightly. “I’ve decided to exceptionally appoint her as an attending physician in the surgical department of the base hospital.”

The moment he said this, everyone present was stunned, frozen in place, unable to recover for a long while.

Chen Jun was the first to react, quickly stepping forward. “Congratulations, Comrade Jinhui. From now on, we’ll be colleagues at the same level.”

His position was also as an attending surgeon, but it had taken him six years to reach this point.

And her starting point was exactly where his six-year journey ended—her prospects were truly limitless.

“Thank you. By the way, what was the final exam question?” Su Jinhui suddenly asked.

It wasn’t that she was eager to show off; the first two questions had been very interesting to her, and she thought the last one would be even more challenging.

“The last round is just one question: If the island lacks medicine, would you rely on Compendium of Materia Medica or the Barefoot Doctor’s Handbook?” Chen Jun asked without hesitation.

To be honest, he was also eager to hear Su Jinhui’s perspective.

Su Jinhui didn’t rush to answer. Instead, she took a notebook from her bag, selecting a cover, adding Li Shizhen’s illustrations and Western anatomical diagrams on the inner pages, and on the last page, attaching her self-made atlas of island medicinal herbs.

This notebook was a summary she had compiled while studying contemporary medical texts.

Everyone passed around and leafed through her handwritten book, the room falling into complete silence.

After a while, Director Zhang, hands trembling, excitedly returned the notebook to her. “You have one day to prepare. Report to the hospital the day after tomorrow! The sooner, the better!”

“So my answer was correct?” Su Jinhui closed her notebook.

Chen Jun smiled. “Both yes and no. The official answer is to follow the organization’s arrangements. But your answer is more in line with the problem, and you’ve proven you can handle things independently. You truly are a medical genius.”

If Chen Jun had previously admired her, now he respected her even more.

Su Jinhui’s level was something he might never reach in his lifetime, but so what? Being colleagues, discussing medical research together, was an honor in itself.

Not only did she become a doctor, but she was exceptionally promoted—a fact that quickly spread like wildfire.

Before Su Jinhui could even report to the hospital, the news had already spread across the island.

Liu Hongxi was filled with resentment, unable to sleep all night. The next day, she walked around with dark circles under her eyes, chatting with others just to add fuel to the fire.

Since Su Jinhui wanted to compete for first place, she would make sure Su Jinhui became the island’s unparalleled number one!

“Aunt, do you think a newcomer can beat me? She’s just using connections and a man to get ahead!”

“Big aunt, do you see her background? She comes from a capitalist family and can still establish herself here on our island. Don’t you think she has people behind her?”

“I don’t pity her. I just feel regret. Our island is simple and honest, the military and civilians united, and now there’s a ‘rat’ ruining everything!”

“Exactly! She’s already an attending physician. Dr. Chen worked six years to get there. Who would believe there’s no trickery? I don’t believe it, that’s for sure!”

“I can’t say too much, or others might think I’m jealous. I’m just telling you as family. From now on, better avoid crossing paths with her.”

…

Liu Hongxi’s medical skills were mediocre, but as for her sharp tongue, she dared claim first place across the whole island.

Through her relentless efforts, everyone on the island began to view Su Jinhui with suspicion.

But she wasn’t the only one losing sleep in anger—Liu Ruolan was too.

Since losing face while fishing, Liu Ruolan had locked herself at home, refusing to go out or even step beyond the front door.

She handed over her daily fishing work to her father and refused to see anyone who tried to persuade her.

After so long, she finally thought she had gotten over it, believing outsiders had forgotten her embarrassment. But no sooner had she stepped outside than she heard Su Jinhui had become a military doctor!

And not just a doctor—an attending physician! How could she accept that?

“Ruolan, don’t be mad. It’s not worth ruining your health. So what if she’s a doctor? Everyone knows she’s a sly one, using underhanded methods to get ahead,” Qingju patted her back gently, trying to comfort her.

Liu Ruolan gritted her teeth, feeling a pang of bitterness. “Why! Why does everything good happen to her? Being a doctor is so respectable, far better than fishing. And now she matches so well with Yan Li-ge!”

“Don’t overthink. She’s not even comparable to a finger of yours. Who knows how she got that position? You and Li-ge have years of history, she’s only been around a few days,” Qingju quickly reassured her.

Ruo Nan, dissatisfied, muttered, “I told you not to upset Ruolan. But you had to, right? Now look!”

“Well, how can I be blamed? Ruolan would find out eventually. Better she hears it from us, at least she can vent,” Qingju explained, trying to justify her actions.

Liu Ruolan glared impatiently at them. “Enough! You’re already giving me a headache!”

She watched as the two were nearing their wedding, while Su Jinhui’s life was improving day by day. In contrast, she hadn’t changed at all, even forced to stay home, unable to step outside.

It seemed like heaven had given all luck to Su Jinhui. But why?

She genuinely loved Yan Li’an, without any ulterior motives, yet everything she struggled for was stolen by Su Jinhui the moment she appeared!

She was unwilling! She couldn’t watch it happen. She had to stop it—no, she must!

“I can’t stand seeing her living so well. Are you willing to help me?” Liu Ruolan extended an olive branch to her two close friends.

Qingju hesitated, but Ruo Nan immediately agreed. “Just say it. If it’s your matter, I’ll go through fire and water for you.”

The two then turned their gaze sharply on Qingju, as if questioning her choice.

“I… me too… me too,” Qingju finally said.
