The silence of the abyss was absolute.

Yanlong walked toward the Ancient Tree, his footsteps muffled by a darkness that seemed to breathe.

Standing…

Yet absent.

Her eyes were closed.

Her breathing was slow and steady, like that of a woman sleeping within a bottomless nightmare.

There was no pain upon her face.

No cry for help.

Only the deceptive serenity of a soul drowning in silence, somewhere no one could ever reach.

“Tianyin.”

Her name echoed…

Then vanished at once, swallowed by the darkness.

He called her again.

Then a third time.

Louder.

Nothing.

He stepped closer until only a few inches separated them.

Close enough to feel the warmth of her breath against his skin.

Tianyin’s eyelids did not flutter.

Not even the slightest tremor.

No sign.

Nothing.

Only that impenetrable silence.

The silence of a woman whose soul had been torn away from its shell and cast somewhere far beyond his reach.

A deep, viscous laugh shattered the stillness.

“You may call her name until the end of this world,” the Tree said, “and she will never hear you.”

Its voice came from everywhere at once.

It traveled through the black roots winding across the ground like diseased veins.

The trunk groaned.

Stretched.

And an ancient, corrupted presence awakened within it completely.

“She is already in the depths.”

“I found her where she was weakest.”

“Within the heart of her most painful memories.”

“And I settled there.”

“She relives them over and over.”

“Each repetition more devastating than the last.”

“She will surrender.”

“They always do.”

Yanlong did not answer.

His eyes traveled methodically over the Tree.

Cold.

Calculating.

And what he saw made his blood run cold.

Its twisted branches vanished into the darkness high above the abyss.

But it wasn’t their shape that caught his attention.

It was what hung from them.

Thousands of crimson plaques glittered at the tip of every branch.

Suspended like dead leaves that had refused to fall.

He narrowed his eyes.

Took one step back.

Names.

Every plaque bore a name.

Carved into something that looked disturbingly like dried flesh.

The names of men.

Women.

Perhaps even children.

A collection gathered over countless millennia.

A cemetery hanging in the air.

Every one of those lives reduced to a single label swaying from a twisted branch.

Forgotten by both heaven and earth.

How many were there?

Hundreds?

Thousands?

Souls devoured one after another.

Century after century.

Consumed by this thing that feasted endlessly upon their suffering.

Then his gaze dropped to Tianyin.

Crimson veins pulsed around her.

They burst from the trunk.

Pierced into her body.

Then spread through every inch of the black bark, from the roots all the way to the highest branches.

A living, ravenous network of blood that embraced the entire Tree.

They pulsed in time with Tianyin’s heartbeat.

Pumping.

Drawing.

Taking.

She was growing paler.

Far too pale.

“At last,” the Tree murmured.

Its voice dripped with obscene satisfaction.

The satisfaction of something that had waited far too long.

It no longer laughed.

This was worse.

It was contentment.

“She has surrendered.”

Yanlong raised one hand.

A golden seal erupted between his fingers.

Ancient light.

Symbols woven through the air by nothing but the force of his will.

He thrust it toward the trunk.

The Tree laughed.

There was no pain.

No recoil.

Only that thick, satisfied laughter echoing like mockery.

“A seal?”

“Against me?”

“Foolish mortal.”

“Tianyin herself has already opened the door to her soul.”

“You cannot seal what she willingly opened.”

Yanlong no longer listened.

He gripped his sword.

Then drove it into the trunk with all his strength.

A blinding flash erupted from the impact.

White.

Razor-sharp.

Violent.

The explosion slammed directly into his chest.

He was hurled backward across the abyss, crashing heavily against the ground.

The impact rattled every bone in his body.

His sword trembled where it remained buried to the hilt inside the black wood.

Then…

The Tree spat it out.

The blade shot through the air and buried itself into the ground only inches from Yanlong’s head.

Still vibrating from the force of its ejection.

Louder.

And louder.

Until it filled the entire abyss.

Yanlong slowly rose to his feet.

He wiped the blood from the corner of his lips.

Picked up his sword.

Then lifted his eyes once more toward the branches…

Toward the thousands of crimson plaques swaying gently…

Toward the crimson veins that continued pumping without pause.

He didn’t have time.

Tianyin was growing paler with every heartbeat.

He closed his eyes.

Reached deep within himself.

And summoned something else.

He raised one hand toward the Tree.

Thousands of golden seals burst from his palm.

They exploded through the darkness like a shower of fallen stars.

Spinning.

Blazing.

Radiant.

One by one, they attached themselves to the black bark.

Across the trunk.

Across the roots.

Across every inch of that ancient being.

They covered the millennia-old Tree in an armor of golden light that pulsed and burned against its corrupted bark.

The Tree stopped laughing.

“More golden toys?”

“Amusing, little—”

“Come back.”

A single word.

Not an incantation.

Not a shout.

Just those two quiet syllables.

Spoken with absolute certainty.

Yanlong extended his hand toward Tianyin.

Palm open.

Eyes closed.

Every ounce of his concentration focused upon the invisible thread that had connected them ever since the symbols upon their foreheads had first begun to glow.

The Tree fell silent.

Tianyin moved.

Slowly.

Painfully slowly.

Her body began to pull away from the trunk.

One inch.

Then another.

The bark resisted.

The crimson veins stretched taut like ropes on the verge of snapping.

Sweat rolled down Yanlong’s face.

His teeth clenched.

The muscles in his arm trembled beneath the invisible strain.

He couldn’t let go.

Not even for a single second.

“How…” the Tree growled.

And for the first time…

Its voice carried something resembling fear.

“How can a mere mortal do this?”

Yanlong had no answer.

Or perhaps he simply didn’t care to find one.

He pulled.

He endured.

He refused to yield.

With one violent jerk, Tianyin was torn free from the trunk.

Her body fell toward him.

But chains held her back.

Forged from the Tree’s own bark.

Black.

Thick.

Braided from something organic that still pulsed with life.

They bound her wrists.

Her ankles.

The Ancient Tree gripped the other ends, pinning her against its trunk like a trophy it refused to surrender.

Yanlong seized his sword.

He struck the first chain.

It didn’t break.

The blade rebounded as though it had struck solid stone.

He struck again.

And again.

Steel bit into the bark…

Yet failed to shatter it.

“They are indestructible,” the Tree said.

The pleasure had returned to its voice.

“Just as she belongs to me now.”

Then…

Tianyin opened her eyes.

She blinked once.

Twice.

The reality of the abyss washed over her like icy water.

She saw the chains.

She saw the trunk pressed against her back.

She saw Yanlong standing before her.

Breathing heavily.

Holding his sword with both hands.

Still refusing to give up.

“Leave.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Yanlong.”

“Leave.”

“Now.”

He turned toward her.

Their eyes met for the first time since he had entered this place.

For a brief moment…

Neither of them spoke.

“Didn’t you hear me?” she snapped.

And in her voice…

He heard something that sounded like panic.

Not for herself.

He understood that immediately.

For him.

“This is my abyss.”

“The longer you stay…”

“The deeper it traps you.”

“There is no way out, Yanlong.”

“No one escapes the abyss of another person’s soul.”

“No one.”

“Leave while you still can.”

Her chained hand—

Though her fingers remained free—

Reached out and caught his sleeve.

“Go.”

Then raised his eyes to meet hers.

“No.”

The Tree burst into satisfied laughter.

“You see?”

“Even she is telling you to leave.”

“Even she knows this is already over.”

“Tianyin has made her choice, little mortal.”

“Respect it.”

“And save what little life you still have.”

Yanlong leaned toward her.

Slowly.

Without ever breaking eye contact.

Until only a few inches remained between them.

Nothing but air…

And the weight of what he was about to say.

“I won’t abandon you.”

Four words.

Tianyin had heard thousands throughout her life.

Promises.

Oaths.

Declarations.

Every single one had eventually shattered.

She had learned very young that words cost nothing.

That people always left.

That everything she cherished eventually disappeared…

Or died.

As though fate itself had decided she was unworthy of holding anything precious.

So she looked at him.

Waiting.

Waiting to find the lie in his eyes.

There wasn’t one.

“Leave me here.”

Her voice broke on the final word despite herself.

“I don’t deserve for anyone to care about me.”

“Everything that comes too close to me…”

“Dies.”

“Or disappears.”

“Everything.”

“It’s always been that way.”

“So go, Yanlong.”

“Leave while you still can.”

The tears she stubbornly refused to shed swelled in her eyes.

Blurring her vision.

Breaking the light into countless painful fragments.

She fought to hold them back.

That absurd pride.

That instinct to hide everything she felt…

Even in the deepest part of her own soul.

And Yanlong—

The man who had never been moved by anything.

The man whose heart had been compared to stone by those who knew him best—

Felt something crack inside his chest.

He had never understood how a single gaze could wield such power.

How someone’s eyes could reach something buried so deeply inside him…

That he had forgotten it even existed.

She wasn’t trying to move him.

She wasn’t trying to make him stay.

Quite the opposite.

She was pushing him away with everything she had.

And that…

Was precisely why he didn’t move.

“I’m taking you home.”

The symbols upon their foreheads ignited simultaneously.

A blaze.

Golden.

Brilliant.

Pulsing together like two hearts that had finally recognized…

What their minds had not yet accepted.

Yanlong slipped one hand behind Tianyin’s neck.

His fingers gently disappeared into her hair.

Then he drew her toward him.

Their foreheads touched.

The contact was silent.

Intimate.

Absolutely devastating.

Tianyin closed her eyes.

The tears she had held back for far too long finally slipped down her cheeks.

Silently.

Without a sob.

Like a dam giving way…

Not beneath violence.

But beneath the unbearable weight of time.

Yanlong closed his eyes as well.

And between them…

Something opened.

Something that had no name in any ordinary language.

Something the ancients had once called the rarest…

And most feared bond of all.

One that even immortals could spend countless lifetimes without ever experiencing.

A brilliant light exploded.

The Ancient Tree screamed.

Not a scream of rage.

A scream of terror.

“NO!”

Its branches twisted wildly.

Its roots tore free from the ground.

The thousands of crimson plaques rang together like alarm bells throughout the darkness.

“The Heart Seal…

how…?!”

“Impossible!”

“You’re only a mortal!”

“How can you possibly—?!”

The bark chains cracked.

One after another.

They split apart.

Blackened.

Then crumbled into ash around Tianyin’s wrists and ankles.

Burned away from within by something no Ancient Tree…

No creature born from the abyss…

Had ever possessed the power to consume.

Something the Ancient Tree—

After millennia spent collecting the broken souls of the lonely…

And the abandoned—

Had never truly encountered.

The light between their foreheads blazed even brighter.

And the entire abyss trembled.
