Kolkata, 16th August 1946

There is a particular kind of silence that settles over a city right before it burns — not the silence of peace, but the silence of everyone listening for the first scream.

Uma Basu heard it from her rooftop, where she had gone to bring in the drying chillies before dusk, the way she had a thousand evenings before this one.Full novel: A Tale of Two Houses in Kolkata — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Tonight the sky over the neighboring rooftops was the wrong colour.

Orange where it should have been grey.

And somewhere below, in the tangle of lanes she had known her whole life, people were running who had no reason to run — except that the reason had arrived anyway, uninvited, the way it always does.

She thought, absurdly, of a wedding.

Not her brother’s — that one had happened, joyfully, years ago, and its memory was safe.

She thought of the other one.

The one that had never taken place.

The ashirbad ceremony where marigolds had hung from a doorway that no longer spoke to hers, where a room full of people who loved each other had found, in a single evening, a hundred reasons to stop.

She had not said Arun Sengupta’s name aloud in seven years.

She had trained her mouth around the absence of it the way a tongue learns to avoid a broken tooth.

Below her, the pounding began — someone at the gate of the house two doors down, shouting a name, begging to be let in before the mob reached the lane.

Uma set down the basket of chillies.

Her hands, she noticed, were not shaking.

Seven years of silence had taught her a strange kind of steadiness.

She went down the stairs two at a time, toward whatever was left of the world she used to know — not knowing yet that the door she was running toward, and the door on the other side of it, were about to open at exactly the same moment, for exactly the same reason, after seven years of staying shut.

Some silences end quietly.

This one would end in fire.
