She really didn’t want to have Song Yanchuan’s surname in front of her own name anymore.
Disgusting!
“Of course I know what I’m saying.”
With that, she sat down on the empty stool in the middle, her expression serious. “I already asked my daughter before to come here to arrange a divorce certificate.”
Hearing this, the women’s director finally remembered—indeed, there had been such a matter. That evening, as she was getting ready to pack up and go home for dinner, Song family’s youngest daughter had rushed over, flustered, saying she wanted to get a divorce certificate for her parents.
The director pursed her lips: “Wife of the Old Song family, not to say anything bad, but by doing this, you really aren’t planning to stay in the village anymore, huh?”
Wen Yifan couldn’t help but smile at that.
“Director, I don’t understand your words. Divorce between a couple is as natural as eating or drinking. If it doesn’t work out, why wait until someone gets hurt before divorcing?”
Her sharp retort left the director momentarily speechless. She opened her mouth for a long time but couldn’t say a word.
Finally, the village chief spoke.
He took a drag of his pipe, exhaled a choking cloud of smoke, and feigned gravity: “It’s not that simple. Think about it—you’ve been with Old Song for so many years. You even have several children. Now you say you want a divorce. Even if you don’t care about yourself, what about the kids?”
Seeing their cautious attitude, Wen Yifan raised a sarcastic smile.
“Song Yanchuan has been spending my money on eating, drinking, gambling, and whoring. Over the years, if I weren’t thick-skinned, I would’ve beaten him to death long ago!”
She rolled up her sleeves, revealing old scars.
Of course, she had deliberately kept these scars to show the village committee—each one a clear proof of Song Yanchuan’s domestic violence!
“That’s not even the worst of it. The main thing is he cheats! Who in the village doesn’t know about him and that Widow Bai? I tolerated it before, but now my youngest daughter has her college entrance exams, and the house is never peaceful. How is she supposed to study?”
“I don’t have expectations for the eldest and second son—their tempers are just like their father’s—but our third and fourth children are good. I can’t bear to let them live in this kind of household every day!”
Hearing Wen Yifan’s complaints about Song Yanchuan, the women’s director was filled with mixed emotions. As a woman, she could understand Wen Yifan’s feelings.
But divorce—there had never been such a precedent in their village. How could she respond?
Before the women’s director could speak, the village chief interjected: “Wife of the Old Song family—”
“It’s Wen Yifan!”
Wen Yifan stubbornly corrected him.
“All right, all right. Yifan, I know you’ve suffered, but you also have to think: if this spreads, it may not matter to you, but your third and fourth kids, when they go out, people will gossip. Who has kids grown up and their parents divorcing? Isn’t that right?”
“Besides, about Yanchuan and Widow Bai, isn’t that just village rumors? You can’t take it as fact! Life still has to be lived by yourselves, right?”
Hearing this, Wen Yifan slammed the table, stood up, and glared directly at the village chief. Her voice was stern:
“So, Village Chief, you mean I need to catch him in the act? If I can provide proof, does that mean I can divorce Song Yanchuan?”
The village chief, startled by her sudden outburst, was even more displeased. He assumed she was just like the other gossipy village women and nodded reluctantly.
“Yes! If you can present evidence of Song Yanchuan’s infidelity, I’ll agree to your divorce. Otherwise, not only will it not happen, you’ll have to properly apologize to him and to us!”
Seeing that the village chief was determined to mediate, Wen Yifan didn’t bother with him. She had come fully prepared.
“Good! Then Village Chief, please come with me.”
Seeing her determined expression, the village chief felt uneasy. He was about to refuse but, looking up at Wen Yifan’s resolute face, didn’t know how to say no.
He exchanged a glance with the women’s director and, gritting his teeth, followed Wen Yifan out.
Leaving the village committee, Wen Yifan led them along a side path, avoiding the main road, until they reached the backyard of Widow Bai’s house.
It was noon, and the house was quiet, completely still.
The village chief was just starting to relax, whispering: “Yifan, see? I told you, you’re mistaken. There’s no movement… how could—”
“Shh!”
Wen Yifan gestured for silence and pulled them to hide behind a nearby haystack.
Following her finger, they saw Widow Bai entering from the front door. Song Yanchuan sneaked in from the back door.
He looked around, then shoved a small cloth bag through a doggie door.
A pair of fair hands quickly took the bag, and soon after, the back door opened.
“Good boy, come let me feel you!”
Widow Bai, wearing revealing clothes, her long black hair draped over her shoulders, looked at Song Yanchuan coquettishly.
“Look at you, so eager! Come in quickly!”
She hooked his collar with her finger and pulled him inside.
Then came a series of indescribable sounds.
The women’s director was shocked, her mouth wide open in disbelief.
“This… this Old Song usually looks so honest, how could he…”
Wen Yifan ignored them, stood up, and shouted:
“Good! While I work hard outside to support this family, you two mess around with someone else? Everyone, come see this!”
Her shout drew the villagers out of their houses, gathering around.
Wen Yifan didn’t hesitate. She kicked open the door. On the kang, the two of them were naked, only a quilt covering them.
Seeing Wen Yifan kick the door in, Widow Bai quickly buried her head under the quilt, shivering all over.
“Wen Yifan, you’re crazy!”
Song Yanchuan’s face flushed red. Panicked, he tried to pull on his clothes, still pantsless, and rushed for the door.
“Ah, isn’t this Old Song? Not fond of women, only has a wife, but now—”
“Tsk tsk, the world really has gone downhill…”
The crowd gathered, and the show officially began!
Wen Yifan grabbed a broom lying in the yard and swung it at Song Yanchuan and Widow Bai, hitting them as they screamed and cursed nonstop.
“I told you not to cheat! You’ve ruined a perfectly good home!”
Widow Bai, having been pampered over the years, couldn’t handle this and immediately cried out: “Wen Yifan, are you crazy?! Stop hitting me, stop it!”
With the grudges of two lifetimes combined, Wen Yifan struck with deadly force.
Song Yanchuan, seeing this, suddenly felt pity for Widow Bai and hurriedly tried to pull Wen Yifan away: “You crazy woman! Have you caused enough trouble?”
Wen Yifan’s hair and clothes were pulled into disarray. Seeing Song Yanchuan approach, she redirected her fury and lashed out at him fiercely.
Unable to withstand the relentless onslaught, Song Yanchuan pushed her to the ground.
Wen Yifan landed hard on the floor and howled:
“This is outrageous! My own man, hitting me for some tramp!”
