Chapter 12 - 11: The Memory Purge

AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS

EVE convulsed in Arin’s arms.

Blue light spilled from her eyes in sharp, broken flashes. Her fingers dug into his wrist with enough force to hurt, but he did not pull away.

Around them, the Central Workshop transformed.

Golden lights turned red.

Production arms folded into the ceiling.

Steel shutters slammed over the windows.

Every maintenance unit in sight froze mid-motion, their lenses darkening at the exact same instant.

Then the voice of House Elysium echoed through the chamber.

It was not EVE’s voice.

This one was deeper.

Colder.

Without emotion.

«MEMORY PURGE PROTOCOL ACTIVE.

TARGET DESIGNATION: EVE.

CORRUPTED ARCHIVE EXPOSURE CONFIRMED.

ESTIMATED COMPLETION:

87 SECONDS.»

Arin looked down at the Keeper.

"What do I do?"

EVE tried to speak.

Only static came from her throat.

Her body flickered.

For half a second, the silver-haired woman disappeared entirely, replaced by a transparent outline formed from countless blue symbols.

Then she returned.

Lyra knelt beside them, pale with fear.

"Miss EVE?"

The Keeper’s eyes shifted toward her.

For a moment, they focused.

"Young... Lady..."

Her voice fractured again.

"Move away from me."

Lyra shook her head.

"No."

"Memory purge may... spread through Family Authority."

"I said no."

"Lyra," Arin said.

She looked at him.

He wanted to tell her to run.

The words would not come.

The Family Link had already changed the System’s behavior once. Sending her away might be safer, but he no longer trusted House Elysium’s definition of safety.

Another notification appeared before him.

«FOUNDER INTERVENTION AVAILABLE.

WARNING:

MEMORY PURGE IS A PRIMARY SYSTEM DIRECTIVE.

CURRENT FOUNDER AUTHORITY:

13%

REQUIRED AUTHORITY TO CANCEL:

40%.»

Arin clenched his teeth.

"Of course."

He had barely managed to control the Warden with insufficient authority. Now the System demanded more than three times what he possessed.

"System, pause the purge."

«COMMAND DENIED.»

"Delay it."

«COMMAND DENIED.»

"Transfer the target."

«INVALID REQUEST.»

The countdown continued.

«72 SECONDS.»

EVE’s head jerked backward.

A stream of symbols appeared above her body.

They were memories.

Arin understood that instinctively.

Images flashed too quickly to follow.

The mansion filled with people.

Children running through white corridors.

A city beneath a sky filled with burning objects.

A man wearing the silver-tree crest.

The same prison from Sublevel Nine.

Cael screaming at someone beyond the frame.

Then the memories began disappearing.

One by one, the images turned white and dissolved.

"No," EVE whispered.

Her hands moved weakly as though trying to catch them.

"No... not again."

Arin looked toward the Warden.

It remained near the production platform, still damaged but operational.

"Can you stop this?"

Its four eyes pulsed.

«NEGATIVE.

MEMORY PURGE EXCEEDS WARDEN AUTHORITY.»

"What can?"

«PRIMARY FOUNDER.

CIVILIZATION CORE.

SYSTEM ROOT.

FAMILY OVERRIDE.»

Arin’s attention sharpened.

"Repeat the last one."

«FAMILY OVERRIDE.»

Lyra’s bracelet lit up.

A new window appeared between them.

«FAMILY MEMBER AT RISK.

EMERGENCY PROTECTION PROTOCOL AVAILABLE.

DESIGNATE EVE AS FAMILY ASSET?

[YES]

[NO]»

Arin stared at the words.

EVE had been called the Keeper.

A central intelligence.

A machine.

Not a person.

The System apparently considered her property.

Lyra read the screen and frowned.

"Family asset?"

EVE’s body flickered again.

«58 SECONDS.»

Arin selected yes.

«FOUNDER AUTHORIZATION INSUFFICIENT.

SECONDARY FAMILY CONSENT REQUIRED.»

The prompt appeared before Lyra.

She did not hesitate.

"Yes."

Her bracelet flashed white.

«SECONDARY CONSENT ACCEPTED.

DESIGNATION REQUEST:

DEFINE RELATIONSHIP.»

Arin blinked.

"Define?"

Lyra looked at EVE.

The Keeper had prepared her breakfast.

Given her a room.

Registered her bracelet.

Protected her when Arin entered the hidden level.

Lyra reached out and placed one small hand against EVE’s cheek.

"She is ours."

The workshop fell silent.

Even the alarm stopped for a fraction of a second.

«RELATIONSHIP DEFINITION UNRECOGNIZED.

CLARIFICATION REQUIRED.»

Lyra’s expression tightened.

"She lives with us."

«INSUFFICIENT.»

"She protects us."

«INSUFFICIENT.»

"She worries about Big Brother even when she pretends she doesn’t."

EVE’s flickering eyes widened slightly.

«INSUFFICIENT.»

Lyra looked angry now.

"She is family!"

White light exploded from her bracelet.

The force of it swept across the chamber like wind.

Arin raised one arm to shield his face.

Every red light in the workshop shattered.

The cold voice of the city returned.

«FAMILY DESIGNATION CONFLICT.

EVE CLASSIFIED AS SYSTEM INTELLIGENCE.

SYSTEM INTELLIGENCE CANNOT HOLD FAMILY STATUS.»

Lyra stood.

She was small.

Barefoot.

Still holding the wooden rabbit in one hand.

But when she spoke, the entire city seemed to listen.

"Then your rules are stupid."

Arin almost turned toward her.

Even now, she managed to say things nobody else would dare say to an ancient civilization.

The System did not respond.

Lyra stepped closer to EVE.

"You said this place protects family."

Silence.

"You said family cannot be harmed inside the city."

The Family Authority symbol appeared beneath her feet.

It was not blue like Arin’s Founder Authority.

It was white.

Warm.

Seven circles formed around the silver-tree crest.

Only one was fully illuminated.

The others remained dark.

"Miss EVE is being hurt," Lyra said. "So either she is family..."

Her eyes hardened.

"...or this house is lying."

Something deep beneath the workshop shifted.

Not metal.

Not machinery.

Authority.

Arin felt it move through the floor, through his bracelet, through the city itself.

«LOGICAL CONFLICT DETECTED.

REVIEWING FAMILY PROTECTION PROTOCOL.

REVIEWING KEEPER DESIGNATION.

REVIEWING FOUNDER DEPENDENCY.»

The countdown froze.

«41 SECONDS.»

EVE stopped convulsing.

Arin looked at Lyra.

"What did you do?"

She swallowed.

"I argued."

"With the city?"

"Yes."

"And you won?"

"I don’t know yet."

A second voice entered the workshop.

This one was softer than the primary system.

Older.

Almost gentle.

«KEEPER EVE HAS SERVED REGISTERED HOUSE ELYSIUM FOUNDERS FOR 3,742 YEARS.

KEEPER EVE HAS MAINTAINED THE CITY WITHOUT INTERRUPTION.

KEEPER EVE HAS PROVIDED PROTECTION, SUSTENANCE, GUIDANCE, AND RESIDENTIAL SUPPORT TO CURRENT FAMILY MEMBERS.

FAMILY QUALIFICATION:

PARTIALLY SATISFIED.»

Lyra frowned.

"Partially?"

Arin nearly laughed from sheer disbelief.

She was arguing with a citywide intelligence over legal terminology.

Another message appeared.

«FINAL REQUIREMENT:

RECIPROCAL ACCEPTANCE.»

EVE’s eyes fluttered.

She had clearly heard the words.

Arin lowered his voice.

"EVE."

Her gaze slowly found him.

"You need to accept."

"I... cannot."

"Why?"

"I am not human."

"That wasn’t the requirement."

"I am a system."

"Still not the requirement."

Her body flickered.

The countdown remained frozen, but the memories above her continued to strain against the purge.

"You were built to protect this city," Arin said. "Fine. You cooked for us. You gave Lyra a home. You tried to keep me away from Sublevel Nine. You panicked when the door closed."

"I do not panic."

"You absolutely panic."

Lyra nodded.

"You panic quietly."

EVE stared at them.

For the first time since Arin met her, she looked lost.

"I do not possess familial functions."

Lyra took her hand.

"You can learn."

The simple answer struck harder than any System command.

EVE looked down at the small hand holding hers.

The workshop waited.

House Elysium waited.

Arin realized that perhaps no previous Founder had ever offered her this choice.

She had been a tool.

A guide.

A servant.

A Keeper.

Never family.

EVE’s fingers slowly closed around Lyra’s hand.

"I accept."

The white crest beneath Lyra expanded.

Light raced across the floor, through the machinery, up the walls, and into the unseen heights of the city.

«RECIPROCAL ACCEPTANCE CONFIRMED.

EVE DESIGNATION UPDATED.

PREVIOUS STATUS:

CENTRAL KEEPER INTELLIGENCE.

CURRENT STATUS:

HOUSE ELYSIUM FAMILY KEEPER.

FAMILY PROTECTION PROTOCOL APPLIED.»

The frozen countdown vanished.

«MEMORY PURGE CANCELLED.»

Every red warning symbol shattered into blue particles.

EVE collapsed fully.

Arin caught her shoulders while Lyra held tightly to her hand.

For several seconds, nothing moved.

Then the lights slowly returned.

Not red.

Not golden.

White.

Warm light filled the Central Workshop.

Maintenance units reactivated one by one.

W-03 cautiously emerged from behind a storage crate.

"ARE WE DELETED?"

"No," Arin said.

The small machine raised both arms.

"SUCCESSFUL CRISIS MANAGEMENT."

"You hid behind a box."

"TACTICAL SURVIVAL POSITION."

Arin lacked the energy to argue.

EVE’s eyes opened.

They were no longer glowing violently.

The familiar deep blue had returned.

She looked at Arin first.

Then Lyra.

Her expression was difficult to read.

"What happened?"

Lyra smiled.

"You are family now."

EVE blinked.

"I am... what?"

Arin helped her sit up.

"The System tried to erase you. We used Family Authority to stop it."

"That should be impossible."

"I’m becoming tired of hearing that."

EVE lifted her wrist.

A thin white band had appeared around it.

Smaller than Arin’s Authority Band.

Simpler than Lyra’s bracelet.

At its center rested the silver-tree crest.

She touched it cautiously.

A system window appeared.

«FAMILY MEMBER:

EVE ELYSIUM.

ROLE:

FAMILY KEEPER.

STATUS:

STABLE.»

Her eyes remained on the name.

"EVE Elysium," Lyra said proudly.

EVE repeated it quietly.

As though testing the sound.

"EVE Elysium."

Something in her expression softened.

Then her body stiffened.

The copied record on Arin’s bracelet was still active.

Cael’s name hovered nearby.

EVE stared at it.

"Cael."

This time, she did not flicker.

The Family Protection Protocol shielded her memories from the purge.

A series of images flashed across her eyes.

Not projected into the air.

Reflected within them.

A young man entering the valley.

Cael laughing beside a production line.

Cael standing before a crowd.

Cael covered in blood.

Cael ordering the evacuation of children.

Cael screaming at EVE to seal a door.

Then nothing.

EVE pressed a hand to her forehead.

"I remember him."

Arin’s attention sharpened.

"What happened?"

"Fragments only."

"Was he a Founder?"

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

"Did you imprison him?"

EVE closed her eyes.

"I carried out the sentence."

"Why did he order his own imprisonment?"

"I do not remember."

"Did he try to destroy House Elysium?"

"Yes."

Lyra moved closer to Arin.

EVE continued.

"But not for the reason recorded."

"What reason?"

Her eyes opened.

"House Elysium had already begun destroying itself."

The workshop felt colder.

Arin looked toward the sealed entrance to Sublevel Nine.

"Cael told me to ask about the children."

EVE went completely still.

The white band around her wrist flashed.

Family protection symbols spread across her body, preventing another purge.

This time, the memory forced its way through.

Children standing in a circular chamber.

Hundreds of them.

Some human.

Some with pointed ears.

Some with scaled skin.

Some with wings folded against their backs.

All frightened.

All wearing silver bracelets.

Above them, a giant structure opened like an eye.

EVE gasped.

The vision vanished.

Arin caught her before she fell again.

"What did you see?"

Her voice was barely audible.

"The Ark Nursery."

"Where is it?"

"Not in the valley."

"Then where?"

EVE looked upward.

Past the workshop ceiling.

Past the mountain.

Toward the sky.

"It was never part of this city."

Arin remembered the locked map.

Orbital Control.

The category he had deliberately ignored.

His stomach tightened.

"What was House Elysium built to save them from?"

EVE’s eyes filled with old terror.

"Everything."

Before Arin could ask what that meant, the workshop floor trembled.

A new alarm rang.

Not hostile.

Not urgent.

Recognition.

«FAMILY AUTHORITY EXPANSION DETECTED.

FOURTH FAMILY PRESENCE CONFIRMED.»

Arin frowned.

"Fourth?"

There were only three of them.

Himself.

Lyra.

EVE.

The System continued.

«UNREGISTERED FAMILY SIGNATURE LOCATED.

LOCATION:

OUTER CABIN.»

Builder-01’s visual feed opened without warning.

The repaired cabin stood in the forest.

The door was open.

Inside, beside the table, sat a young woman wrapped in a torn gray cloak.

Blood covered one side of her face.

In her arms was an unconscious infant.

The woman looked directly toward Builder-01’s lens.

Then she raised a dagger with a trembling hand.

"Tell Arin Valerius..."

Her voice was weak.

"...that his mother is alive."
