Chapter 14 - 13: The Founder at the Gate

AFTER BEING EXILED: MY SISTER AND I BUILD HIDDEN CIVILIZATIONS

The path should not have existed.

Arin had crossed the hidden valley enough times to know every route between the cabin and the outer forest. House Elysium did not rely on ordinary roads. Paths shifted according to authority, closing behind residents and leading intruders in circles.

Yet now, the trees were parting.

Silver trunks bent away from one another.

Roots withdrew into the soil.

A straight road formed through the forest, beginning at the outer boundary and ending directly before the cabin.

House Elysium was welcoming the intruders.

Arin stepped outside.

Warden Unit–03 moved with him, placing its massive body between the cabin and the opening path. Crimson light pulsed from its four eyes.

Serena followed despite the way her legs trembled.

One hand pressed against the wound beneath her ribs. The other held her dagger.

"You should lie down," Arin said.

"And allow them to walk past me?"

"You can barely stand."

"I have fought in worse condition."

"That does not make it intelligent."

"No."

Her eyes remained fixed on the distant trees.

"It makes it necessary."

Arin did not waste time arguing.

Nine red points remained visible on the map hovering above his Authority Band.

They had stopped just beyond sight.

Waiting.

The external Founder signature stood at the center.

It was not as strong as Arin had expected.

The System did not display a percentage, but the symbol flickered irregularly, appearing and disappearing like a damaged flame.

Not complete authority.

A fragment.

That did not make it less dangerous.

If anything, it raised more questions.

"Warden," Arin said.

The mechanical beast lowered its head.

"Can you identify the authority signature?"

«NEGATIVE.

SIGNATURE PARTIALLY CORRUPTED.

FOUNDER COMPATIBILITY:

31%.»

Arin’s expression tightened.

Higher than his own.

His current authority stood at thirteen percent, yet House Elysium had opened a path for someone carrying thirty-one percent compatibility.

No wonder the city had responded.

"Can it command you?"

The Warden’s eyes flickered.

«UNCONFIRMED.

ACTIVE FOUNDER PRIORITY:

ARIN ELYSIUM.

EXTERNAL AUTHORITY MAY ISSUE CONFLICTING COMMANDS.»

"Will you follow them?"

A grinding noise came from inside the Warden’s chest.

«CURRENT LOYALTY ANCHOR:

ACTIVE FOUNDER.

FAMILY PROTECTION.

CITY PRESERVATION.»

Not a clear answer.

Arin understood what that meant.

If the intruder issued a command House Elysium considered more important than his own, the Warden might hesitate.

The trees at the end of the path moved.

A man stepped into view.

He walked without hurry.

Tall.

Thin.

Dressed in a long black coat marked with silver stitching. The garment resembled noble clothing from a distance, but it lacked any crest Arin recognized.

A pale mask covered the upper half of his face.

It was carved into the shape of a smiling human expression.

Behind him came eight others.

Every one wore dark gray armor beneath heavy traveling cloaks.

No banners.

No insignia.

No visible guild marks.

They moved with the calm discipline of trained hunters.

Serena’s breath caught.

"The Hollow Crown."

Arin glanced at her.

"You recognize them?"

"The armor."

Her voice was tight.

"They remove their symbols before entering another territory, but the stitching around the throat is the same."

The masked man stopped twenty paces from the Warden.

His companions spread out behind him.

None drew weapons.

That made them more dangerous.

Ordinary raiders displayed steel to control fear.

These people were confident enough not to bother.

The masked man looked past Arin.

Toward the cabin.

"Serena Vale."

His voice was pleasant.

Almost warm.

"You have caused a remarkable amount of inconvenience."

Serena raised her dagger.

"Come closer."

The man tilted his head.

"Still loyal."

"Still breathing."

"For the moment."

His attention shifted to Arin.

The smile carved into his mask did not move.

"Arin Valerius."

Arin did not react.

"You know who I am."

"Everyone knows who you are."

"Then you understand entering my territory uninvited was a mistake."

The masked man laughed softly.

"Your territory?"

He looked around at the silver forest.

"Such confidence from someone who has lived here less than a week."

Arin felt the Authority Band heat against his wrist.

The external Founder symbol brightened.

The man had not merely followed Serena.

He knew about the city.

"How did you find this place?" Arin asked.

"We did not."

"Then why are you here?"

"We followed what escaped us."

His gaze moved toward the cabin again.

"The valley found us."

Arin remembered the path opening.

House Elysium had invited them.

Or invited him.

"Who are you?" Arin asked.

The man touched two fingers to his chest.

"Among the Hollow Crown, I am called the Ninth Hand."

"A title."

"Names create unnecessary attachments."

"I prefer knowing what to call the person I am about to remove from my land."

Several of the armored hunters shifted.

The Ninth Hand remained still.

"You have inherited your mother’s temperament."

Serena’s dagger trembled.

Not from weakness this time.

From anger.

"You do not speak of her."

The masked man ignored her.

"Has she told you where your mother is?"

"Yes."

"Then she has already lied."

Serena took one step forward.

Blood spread across her cloak.

"She is beneath Saint Orlan."

"She was."

The word struck the clearing harder than a shout.

Arin’s expression did not change.

Inside, something tightened.

"Was?"

The Ninth Hand inclined his head.

"Your mother is no longer imprisoned beneath the monastery."

"Where is she?"

"I could tell you."

"Then do it."

"But information has value."

Arin looked at the eight hunters behind him.

"You came into a hidden city with nine people. Either you believe I cannot kill you, or you believe I will not."

The Ninth Hand spread his hands.

"Both."

Warden Unit–03 growled.

The sound vibrated through the ground.

Blue energy gathered between the plates along its spine.

The hunters did not retreat.

One of them stepped forward instead.

A woman carrying a long metal staff.

A ring of red mana formed beneath her boots.

Another hunter raised a shield covered in black runes.

The remaining six moved into a loose formation.

They were ready.

Arin watched them carefully.

Not one appeared nervous about the Warden.

They knew what it was.

Or believed they had prepared for it.

The Ninth Hand turned his masked face toward the mechanical beast.

"Warden Unit–03."

The Warden froze.

Arin’s Authority Band flashed.

«EXTERNAL COMMAND ATTEMPT DETECTED.»

The man raised one hand.

On his palm was a circular scar.

Within it, burned into the flesh, was the silver tree surrounded by seven stars.

"Recognition protocol."

The symbol glowed.

"Stand down."

The Warden’s claws scraped across the ground.

Its crimson eyes flickered silver.

Then crimson again.

«CONFLICTING AUTHORITY DETECTED.

EXTERNAL FOUNDER COMPATIBILITY:

31%.

ACTIVE FOUNDER AUTHORITY:

13%.

RESOLVING PRIORITY.»

Arin felt a cold pressure settle over the clearing.

Serena looked at him.

"What is happening?"

"He is trying to take control."

"Can he?"

Arin did not answer.

The Warden’s head turned slightly.

Toward him.

Then toward the Ninth Hand.

Its internal gears screamed.

Arin raised his left arm.

"Warden Unit–03."

The creature’s four eyes focused on him.

"You were ordered to protect House Elysium."

«AFFIRMATIVE.»

"You were ordered to protect its Founder."

«AFFIRMATIVE.»

"And you were ordered to protect its family."

The Warden’s gaze moved toward the distant mansion.

Toward Lyra.

Toward EVE.

«AFFIRMATIVE.»

Arin pointed at the intruders.

"They crossed the boundary with hostile intent."

The Ninth Hand chuckled.

"You cannot prove intent."

"I do not need to."

Arin’s voice hardened.

"They threatened a member of this household."

A white symbol appeared beneath the Warden’s feet.

Family Authority.

The external command flickered.

The Ninth Hand’s posture changed.

Only slightly.

But Arin noticed.

He had not expected that.

«FAMILY PROTECTION PRIORITY INVOKED.

EXTERNAL FOUNDER COMMAND REJECTED.»

The Warden roared.

Energy erupted from its spine.

The force shook leaves from the trees.

For the first time, the Hollow Crown hunters drew their weapons.

The woman with the staff slammed its end into the ground.

A red barrier formed around the group.

The Warden fired.

A beam of blue light crossed the clearing.

The barrier shattered instantly.

The blast hurled three hunters backward.

One struck a tree hard enough to crack the trunk.

Another rolled across the road and failed to rise.

The Ninth Hand had not moved.

A transparent silver shield surrounded him.

The Founder symbol burned on his palm.

"Interesting," he said.

Arin heard no fear in his voice.

Only fascination.

"That authority did not exist in the previous cycle."

The word struck Arin.

"Cycle?"

Serena lunged.

She crossed the distance faster than her injuries should have allowed.

Her dagger aimed for the Ninth Hand’s throat.

One of the hunters intercepted her.

Steel met steel.

Serena twisted beneath his sword and drove her elbow into his ribs, but the movement tore open her wound.

Her body faltered.

The hunter struck her across the face.

She fell.

Arin moved immediately.

The Phantom-01 formed beneath him in a burst of blue light.

He accelerated across the clearing.

The hunter raised his sword.

Arin leaned sideways and drove the motorcycle’s reinforced frame into the man’s knees.

Bone cracked.

The hunter spun through the air.

Arin released the handlebars before the Phantom struck the road, letting the vehicle dissolve beneath him.

He landed beside Serena.

"Can you move?"

"I told you," she breathed, "I have fought in worse condition."

"You are currently losing."

"That happens."

A shadow fell over them.

The woman with the staff swung downward.

Arin pulled Serena aside.

The staff struck the earth.

A wave of red mana tore through the ground.

Soil exploded.

Arin rolled behind a tree while Serena landed several paces away.

The woman lifted the staff again.

Then Warden Unit–03 crashed into her.

Its armored shoulder hit the red barrier around her body.

The barrier survived for less than a second.

She disappeared beneath the Warden’s claws.

The Ninth Hand raised his scarred palm.

"Enough."

The command was not directed at the Warden.

It was directed at the city.

Every silver tree lit up.

The valley answered.

«LEGACY FOUNDER REQUEST DETECTED.

EMERGENCY ARBITRATION INITIATED.»

The Warden stopped.

Hidden drones froze in the branches.

Defense turrets withdrew halfway into the soil.

Arin’s map vanished.

A massive symbol appeared above the road.

Two silver trees.

One marked in blue.

One marked in gray.

«COMPETING FOUNDER CLAIMS DETECTED.

ACTIVE FOUNDER:

ARIN ELYSIUM.

LEGACY CLAIMANT:

UNKNOWN.

AUTHORITY COMPARISON INCOMPLETE.

DIRECT COMBAT BETWEEN CLAIMANTS PROHIBITED DURING ARBITRATION.»

The Ninth Hand looked at Arin.

"There."

His voice remained calm.

"Now we may speak without unnecessary interruptions."

Arin stood.

"You planned this."

"I hoped the city would remember its rules."

"Who gave you that authority?"

The Ninth Hand looked at the scar on his palm.

"I inherited it."

"From whom?"

"A corpse."

Serena pushed herself onto one knee.

"Do not listen to him."

The Ninth Hand turned slightly.

"You still believe you understand this organization."

"I understand enough."

"No."

His masked gaze returned to Arin.

"She believes the Hollow Crown exists to control noble houses. Steal bloodlines. Manipulate awakenings."

"Does it?"

"Yes."

The casual answer silenced even Serena.

"But those are tools," he continued. "Not our purpose."

"What is your purpose?" Arin asked.

"To prevent House Elysium from finishing what it began."

The wind moved through the clearing.

Arin thought of Cael.

His self-imprisonment.

His attempt to destroy the city.

"The city was built to save children," Arin said.

The Ninth Hand laughed.

"That is what it tells every Founder."

Serena looked toward Arin.

"You knew?"

"Fragments."

The Ninth Hand took one slow step forward.

The arbitration warning brightened, but nothing stopped him.

"We have been waiting for Project Elysium to choose again," he said. "We searched noble families. guild bloodlines. orphan registries. ruined villages."

His mask tilted.

"Then a classless heir was exiled."

Arin’s grip tightened.

"You arranged my exile."

"No."

The answer came immediately.

"Your father managed that himself."

A cold anger spread through Arin.

"But we encouraged the conditions surrounding it."

"The false reports."

"Yes."

"The missing supplies."

"Yes."

"The attention on my awakening."

"Yes."

Serena stared at him.

"You watched a child for years."

"We watched a key."

Arin moved before thought could stop him.

The arbitration symbol flashed.

«DIRECT HOSTILITY PROHIBITED.»

Invisible pressure slammed into his body.

He was thrown backward.

His shoulder struck the cabin wall.

Pain burst through his arm.

The Ninth Hand remained untouched.

"House Elysium protects both claimants until arbitration concludes," he said. "Violence is temporarily useless."

Arin forced himself upright.

"What do you want?"

"The infant."

"No."

"Then your sister."

The clearing went still.

The Warden’s eyes turned crimson.

Every frozen drone trembled against the arbitration command.

Arin’s voice became quiet.

"Say that again."

The Ninth Hand did not hesitate.

"The infant carries an Ark bloodline. Your sister carries a Family Authority anomaly. Either would be sufficient."

"Sufficient for what?"

"To open the Nursery."

Serena’s face lost what little color remained.

"You said the Nursery was destroyed."

"We believed it was."

The Ninth Hand looked toward the mountains.

"Then House Elysium awakened."

Arin took one slow breath.

"You will leave without either."

"Perhaps."

The man reached into his coat.

Arin expected a weapon.

Instead, he withdrew a small crystal cylinder.

Something moved inside it.

A strand of silver light.

The Authority Band reacted immediately.

«FAMILY SIGNATURE DETECTED.

MATCH PROBABILITY:

98.7%.»

Arin stared at the cylinder.

The Ninth Hand held it between two fingers.

"Your mother gave us this willingly."

"That is impossible."

"Is it?"

"She hates you."

"Yes."

"Then why would she help you?"

"To keep you alive."

Arin said nothing.

The Ninth Hand continued.

"She understood what would happen if you restored the city too quickly. She understood what Project Elysium had done to the Founders before you."

"Where is she?"

"Safe."

"Where?"

"Beyond your current reach."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Serena looked up sharply.

"You cannot know that."

"I spoke with her three days ago."

Her dagger slipped from her hand.

Arin watched the Ninth Hand.

There were too many lies.

Too many truths mixed between them.

"You came for the infant," Arin said. "Why bring proof concerning my mother?"

"Because I would prefer cooperation."

"And if I refuse?"

The masked man looked toward the mansion.

"Then we wait."

"For what?"

"For the city to choose between you."

Arin’s Authority Band vibrated.

The arbitration symbol began changing.

Lines of blue and gray light spread across the road.

«FOUNDER ARBITRATION CONDITIONS MET.

HOUSE ELYSIUM REQUIRES A SINGLE PRIMARY AUTHORITY.

CLAIMANTS MUST COMPLETE A LEGACY TRIAL.

TRIAL LOCATION:

CABIN ZERO.»

The old cabin behind Arin groaned.

Its wooden walls split.

Not breaking.

Opening.

Ancient metal emerged from beneath the floorboards.

The table collapsed into blue light.

The fireplace descended.

A circular door appeared beneath the structure.

Arin stared.

The cabin had never been the first house.

It had been covering something.

The Ninth Hand laughed again.

"There you are."

For the first time, genuine satisfaction entered his voice.

"Cabin Zero."

The circular door opened.

Cold air rose from the darkness below.

A staircase illuminated itself one step at a time.

At the bottom, something began to beat.

Slowly.

Like a heart.

«LEGACY TRIAL AVAILABLE.

WINNER WILL RECEIVE:

PRIMARY FOUNDER RECOGNITION.

LOSER WILL FORFEIT ALL AUTHORITY.»

Serena grabbed Arin’s sleeve.

"You cannot go down there with him."

The Ninth Hand removed his mask.

The face beneath it was younger than Arin expected.

Perhaps twenty-five.

Pale skin.

Gray eyes.

And features Arin had seen countless times in portraits lining the halls of House Valerius.

The same straight nose.

The same sharp jaw.

The same dark hair as his father.

Serena stared in horror.

The man smiled.

"My apologies."

He dropped the mask onto the road.

"We should have been introduced properly."

The Founder symbol burned across his palm.

"My name is Lucan Valerius."

Arin’s blood turned cold.

Lucan stepped toward the hidden staircase.

"And I am your father’s firstborn son."
