The first thing Arin noticed was the silence.
Not the silence of an empty room.
Not the silence of the night.
This was the kind of silence that settled over a battlefield moments before blood was spilled.
The red lights illuminating House Elysium continued to pulse across the valley, casting long shadows over the ancient streets below.
Beside him, EVE remained perfectly still.
"Repeat that," Arin said quietly.
"Twelve members of House Valerius have entered Elysium Territory."
His expression hardened.
"How?"
"Unknown."
"Can they see the city?"
"No."
That gave him pause.
"No?"
EVE shook her head.
"House Elysium possesses multiple concealment fields. To unauthorized individuals, this valley appears to be nothing more than an abandoned cliffside."
"Then why are the alarms active?"
"Because they crossed the outer boundary."
The Keeper’s eyes briefly glowed blue.
"They are currently searching for you."
Of course they were.
Arin almost laughed.
Less than two days.
It had taken House Valerius less than two days to decide that his exile was somehow suspicious.
Behind him, the balcony door suddenly opened.
Lyra stepped outside wearing a nightgown while carrying Mr. Buttons beneath one arm.
"Why is the city angry?"
"The city isn’t angry."
"Then why is it red?"
"...Fair question."
She walked over to the railing and stared at the lights below.
"I was having a nice dream."
"What was it about?"
"You buying me a dragon."
Arin blinked.
"A dragon?"
"Or a very large cat. I’m flexible."
There were moments when he wondered if Lyra viewed reality as a set of optional suggestions.
"Should I be worried?" she asked.
"Probably not."
"That means yes."
She knew him too well.
EVE stepped forward.
"Young Lady Lyra, there is no immediate danger."
"Oh."
"House Elysium possesses sufficient defenses to repel an army."
"Oh."
There was a brief pause.
"Can I see?"
Arin and EVE both turned toward her.
"See what?"
"The army part."
"No."
"A little?"
"No."
She sighed dramatically.
"No one lets me have any fun."
Arin decided not to mention that she was eight years old.
It hadn’t stopped her before.
A new notification appeared before him.
«NEW OBJECTIVE AVAILABLE.
DEFEND HOUSE ELYSIUM.
REWARD:
500 EXPERIENCE
CONSTRUCTION MODULE: TIER I
SECURITY AUTHORITY LEVEL UP»
Experience.
That was another thing he needed to investigate.
"So this really is a game."
"No," EVE said quietly.
Arin looked at her.
"No?"
"Games are designed for entertainment."
Her expression remained unreadable.
"Project Elysium was designed for survival."
Something about the way she said those words unsettled him.
Before he could ask further questions, the alarm changed.
«OUTER PERIMETER BREACHED.
DISPLAYING HOSTILE ENTITIES.»
A series of images appeared in the air.
Arin’s eyes widened.
It was a live feed.
Twelve figures moved through the forest below, each carrying weapons and wearing the silver lion crest of House Valerius.
At their head was a man Arin immediately recognized.
"Sir Roland."
The old knight looked exactly as he remembered.
Gray hair.
Scar across his left eye.
Commander of House Valerius’s private hunters.
And one of the few people in the manor who had ever treated Arin kindly.
Lyra immediately recognized him as well.
"That’s Uncle Roland."
"He isn’t our uncle."
"He brings me candy."
"That doesn’t make him family."
"It helps."
Arin couldn’t argue with that.
Roland had served House Valerius for over thirty years. If the Duke had sent him personally, then this wasn’t a simple scouting mission.
His father wanted answers.
"Can they enter the valley?"
"No."
"Can they leave?"
"Yes."
That was reassuring.
Probably.
EVE’s expression shifted slightly.
"However, there is a ninety-three percent probability they will not."
Arin slowly turned toward her.
"...Why?"
"The outer perimeter is occupied."
"Occupied by what?"
There was a brief silence.
Then the Keeper answered in the same tone one might use to discuss the weather.
"Three hundred and twelve autonomous defense units."
Silence.
"Three hundred and twelve?"
"Correct."
"And where exactly have these defense units been for the last three thousand years?"
"Waiting."
That answer somehow made things worse.
The live feed shifted.
Roland had stopped walking.
The old knight’s expression was grim as he examined the surroundings.
"Something’s wrong," he said.
One of the younger hunters frowned.
"Sir?"
"The forest is too quiet."
Arin couldn’t help but agree.
Every monster in the region had apparently decided that tonight was an excellent time to be somewhere else.
Another hunter spoke.
"Do you really think Young Master Arin is involved in this?"
Roland remained silent for several moments.
"I watched that boy grow up."
"And?"
"He has his mother’s eyes."
That wasn’t an answer.
Eventually, Roland sighed.
"I don’t know."
The old knight looked toward the northern mountains.
"But whatever caused that phenomenon yesterday..."
His expression darkened.
"...it wasn’t human."
Arin felt strangely guilty listening to that.
Technically, Roland wasn’t wrong.
He still wasn’t entirely convinced Project Elysium counted as human.
A second notification appeared.
«HOSTILE ENTITIES APPROACHING DEFENSIVE ZONE B-14.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
OBSERVE.»
"I don’t like that recommendation."
"Observation is an important learning experience," EVE replied.
"For who?"
"Everyone involved."
That was not reassuring.
The live feed suddenly zoomed in.
One of the younger hunters had moved ahead of the group.
"Careful!" Roland called.
Too late.
The man stepped across an invisible line.
And immediately froze.
Blue lights appeared throughout the forest.
Dozens of them.
Then hundreds.
Arin watched as small metallic spheres emerged from the trees.
Each one was approximately the size of a human head and hovered silently several feet above the ground.
The hunters immediately drew their weapons.
"What in the gods’ names are those?!"
"Unknown entities detected."
"They’re surrounding us!"
Arin counted at least fifty.
Then remembered EVE had said there were over three hundred.
"Oh."
Lyra pressed her face against the floating screen.
"They’re cute."
"Cute?"
"They look like angry lanterns."
That was... surprisingly accurate.
One of the spheres moved forward.
A mechanical voice echoed through the forest.
«WARNING.
YOU HAVE ENTERED RESTRICTED TERRITORY.
PLEASE LEAVE IN AN ORDERLY FASHION.»
Silence.
Roland slowly lowered his sword.
"...Did the floating ball just ask us politely to leave?"
"YES," another sphere replied.
"WE ARE VERY POLITE."
Arin stared.
"EVE."
"Yes, Master?"
"Why are the defense systems polite?"
"Studies indicate that polite warnings reduce unnecessary casualties by twelve percent."
"Of course they do."
One of the younger hunters raised his weapon.
"Sir Roland, permission to engage!"
"No."
"But—"
"I said no."
The old knight’s instincts had clearly kept him alive for a very long time.
"Whatever these things are," Roland said quietly, "they are not our enemy."
One of the spheres tilted slightly.
«THAT IS CORRECT.
CURRENT ENEMY STATUS:
PENDING.»
Arin buried his face in his hands.
"Why do they talk like that?"
"They enjoy social interaction."
"They’re defense drones!"
"Even defense drones become lonely after three thousand years."
That...
Actually made a disturbing amount of sense.
Roland stepped forward.
"My name is Roland of House Valerius."
«HELLO ROLAND OF HOUSE VALERIUS.»
"I seek information regarding a young man and his sister."
«INFORMATION REQUEST DENIED.»
"Can you tell me why?"
«NO.»
There was another pause.
"Can I ask why not?"
«YES.»
"...Why not?"
«INFORMATION REQUEST DENIED.»
Arin heard Lyra giggle.
"They’re funny."
"They’re impossible."
Roland pinched the bridge of his nose.
"I don’t suppose you’ll allow us to pass?"
«NEGATIVE.»
"And if we refuse to leave?"
All of the drones became perfectly still.
Their blue lights slowly shifted to red.
«THAT WOULD BE UNFORTUNATE.»
The temperature on the balcony seemed to drop several degrees.
Even Arin felt a chill run down his spine.
For the first time since meeting EVE, he truly understood something.
House Elysium wasn’t abandoned.
It had never been abandoned.
It had simply been waiting.
Waiting for its Founder to return.
Waiting for instructions.
Waiting to protect the family it had been built for.
And after three thousand years...
It was finally awake.
The drones’ lights returned to blue.
«PLEASE VACATE THE PREMISES.
WE WOULD PREFER NOT TO COMMIT VIOLENCE TODAY.»
Roland stared at them for a long moment.
Then, to everyone’s surprise, he laughed.
It wasn’t a loud laugh.
Just the tired laugh of an old man who had officially decided that the world no longer made sense.
"Very well."
"Sir?!"
"We’re leaving."
The younger hunters looked horrified.
"But what about Young Master Arin?"
Roland was silent for a moment.
Then he looked directly toward the hidden valley.
For one impossible second, Arin felt as though the old knight could see him.
"If he’s here," Roland said quietly, "then he has found a place that will protect him better than House Valerius ever could."
Arin froze.
The old knight smiled sadly.
"And if that’s true..."
He turned away.
"...then perhaps this old man can finally stop worrying."
Without another word, Roland began walking back toward the frontier.
The other hunters reluctantly followed.
Before disappearing into the forest, the old knight stopped one final time.
"Young Master."
Arin’s breath caught.
"I don’t know if you can hear me."
Silence.
"But if you can..."
Roland adjusted his sword.
"...your mother would have been proud."
And with those words, he disappeared into the night.
For the first time since his exile, Arin found himself unable to speak.
Beside him, Lyra quietly took his hand.
And somewhere deep within House Elysium, ancient systems recorded a new entry.
«FIRST THREAT RESOLVED.
HOUSE ELYSIUM SUCCESSFULLY PROTECTED ITS FOUNDER.
STATUS:
MISSION CONTINUES.»
