On September 13 at 8:00 PM, the pilot episode of Wives Traveling Together went live.
Fruit TV gave this show an immense promotional push. Best actress Yan Shutong and singing diva Ji Ran anchored the buzz, top actress Sang Xia brought along her civilian photographer, and legal queen He Lin and Professor Cen Ke showcased a ten-year marathon relationship. Out of the four couples, any single pair on their own was enough to trend on Weibo.
Nobody expected that halfway through the pilot episode, the comment section’s vibe would collectively veer off track.
The starting point of this deviation was the shot of Zhang Qinglan squatting in the entryway to arrange Yi Junling’s slippers. That was near the end of the footage filmed at home, when the two of them were seeing the production crew out. Zhang Qinglan naturally squatted down to straighten the shoes Yi Junling had taken off, and then turned the slippers so they faced the direction of her feet. The whole process took less than three seconds. Yi Junling looked down at her, placed a hand on top of her head, and said nothing.
At that exact instant, the comment section exploded.
“Wait, rewind, rewind and watch that again!”
“This action is so habitually smooth it gives me goosebumps. How many times do you have to do this for it to be so natural?”
“Isn’t she an A-grade alpha? Do A-grade alphas act like this at home?”
“To the person above, an A-grade alpha is the project manager for Rosheng outside, and a shoe-arranger for her older sister at home. Is there any problem with that? (doge face)”
Next came the pillbox.
“I watched the pillbox-sorting part five times. Every compartment even has a label, Monday through Sunday. What kind of precision-instrument level of love is this?”
“Pay attention to how she patted the pillbox twice after putting it into the side pocket. Those two pats, really, so solemn yet so casual, it is killing me.”
“As an omega, I cried watching this. My partner can’t even remember my period.”
Then came the negotiation over Yi Jianwei’s flower cakes.
“What do you mean one and a half? Hahaha. One in the morning, half in the afternoon. Is this mother a demon?”
“Yi Jianwei: I’ve sacrificed too much for this family.”
“This kid is way too smooth. Three boxes, one for Grandma, one for Grandpa, and her own has to be rationed by the day. Perfect logic. Truly deserving of being these two people’s daughter.”
However, what truly sent the popularity soaring to the peak was the comparative editing of the pre-interviews.
The production crew was ruthless. They edited the exact same question from both interview booths together:
“Why did you come on our show?”
Zhang Qinglan, sitting upright and proper, answered: “Company arrangement. And to accompany family.”
Yi Junling, smiling brightly, answered: “I want to let everyone see how wonderful my lover is.”
On the same screen, the left side popped out three characters at a time, while the right side delivered four characters that made the whole venue fall silent. A uniform stream of comments drifted across the screen:
“Teacher Zhang on the left, turn around and look at how your wife is answering the question!”
“One says company arrangement, the other says my lover is wonderful. I can ship this contrast for a whole year.”
“Wait, so it was the older sister who wanted to show off her wife and forcibly dragged the reluctant scientist onto the show?”
“She wasn’t reluctant. Look at the look in Zhang Qinglan’s eyes when she says I follow her. Is that reluctance? That is her giving her whatever she wants.”
“Is it only me who noticed older sister’s line: My past is nothing to be ashamed of? The older sister’s past seems to have a story. Bookmark this first.”
Forty minutes into the broadcast of the pilot episode, the tag #High-IQ Wives# climbed onto the trending search list.
An hour later, the tag #Seven-Year Age Gap# followed closely behind. Some studious fans dug up public information: Yi Junling, 43 years old, professor at Jiangwan University, municipal top scorer in 2018, gave up Tsinghua and Peking University to choose Jiangwan Life Sciences; Zhang Qinglan, 36 years old, project manager for Rosheng Pharmaceuticals’ Xiguang Project. The two had a seven-year age gap, graduated from the same county high school, and were seven classes apart.
“Wait, the same county high school? One is an ’18 top scorer, the other is a county runner-up? What kind of divine alumni are these?”
“County High School: Thank you, this resume can go straight into the admissions brochure.”
“Yi Junling is 43 years old? I would believe her state is 33. Does the knife of time only cut me and not her?”
“Zhang Qinglan is 36 years old? That shot of her squatting on the ground bare-faced, I would believe she is 26. Exactly which of these two stole the other’s time?”
Following that, the phrase “well-matched” began flooding the screen.
First was the match in appearance. At the end of the pilot episode, the two stood side by side at the front door seeing the production crew off. One wore a white shirt and the other wore a long skirt, with a five-centimeter height difference falling on their shoulders. The comment section shouted in unison: “Standing in the same frame is a pictorial!” and “These two standing there are straight-up magazine covers; post-production didn’t even need filters.”
Next was the match in temperament. Someone clipped nine comparison photos: Zhang Qinglan looked polite and distant when looking at the camera, but her eyes shone like a puppy’s when looking at Yi Junling; Yi Junling was generous and proper to everyone, yet the corners of her eyes carried a hook only when teasing Zhang Qinglan. “One cold, one hot,” “One cat, one dog,” and “She is truly aloof, and she is also truly a dog only to her.” The comment section built up thousands of stories deep.
Finally was the match in resumes. Studious fans pasted the two people’s public resumes side by side: On one side was the 2018 municipal top scorer, Jiangwan University Life Sciences, Blue Ridge PhD, national research institute, returned as a directly appointed researcher and doctoral advisor, and promoted to professor in her early forties; on the other side was the 2025 county runner-up, Pujiang University direct PhD program, Lighthouse Polytechnic postdoc, and Rosheng Pharmaceuticals Xiguang Project manager.
“Family members! Putting these two resumes together spells out the word match!”
“Municipal top scorer $times$ county runner-up, Jiangwan $times$ Pujiang, professor $times$ scientist… I declare this the ceiling of sapiosexuality.”
“Other people ship CP and eat sweets, while I ship CP and get peer pressure. After watching, I silently opened up my research literature.”
The archeological digging went deeper and deeper. At twelve midnight, an account verified as the Xiangcheng County High School Alumni Association posted a long Weibo post titled: Regarding Our School’s Two Legendary Seniors, Telling a Few Little Stories.
“Senior Yi Junling, 2018 municipal top scorer, the first in the entire county in decades. That summer, her good-news announcement hung at the school gate for a whole year, red background with gold characters. Every day, us junior schoolmates looked at it as we came and went. The principal said at the assembly that she was the greatest pride since the founding of the county high school.”
“Senior Zhang Qinglan, 2025 county runner-up, myth of the rocket class. I heard that when she crushed the entire senior grade in a mock gaokao English exam, she was only a freshman.”
“The two are seven classes apart, each reigning supreme across a seven-year gap in school history. When the teachers mentioned them, they used the exact same phrase: The child of other people, yet it always has to be their family.”
“Now you’re telling me these two people got married? And they even have a kid?”
This Weibo post was reposted over 30,000 times. The top-voted comment read:
“So this is a story of your name has always been on my alumni wall? So shipped it hurts.”
There were also calm ones: “Wait a minute, they are seven classes apart. The two of them had no intersection in school at all. When Yi Junling graduated, Zhang Qinglan was only in elementary school…”
“To the person above, that’s why they met through a blind date! Well-matched in social status, old hometown folks, knowing each other’s roots makes a good marriage!”
Nobody dug any deeper. Both the comment sections and chats were immersed in the carnival of how well-matched they are, featuring the same small town, the same county high school, the pride of two generations, a seven-year age gap, one conquering the academic world outside, while the other turned around and married the senior back home.
As for that good-news announcement hanging at the school gate during that one year, amidst the flow of people entering and leaving the school gates every day, there was a fifth-grade little girl who always walked the slowest. This was a matter that, at this moment, only one person in the whole world knew.
At 11:00 late at night, the CP fandom super-topic page was opened. The naming vote lost all suspense after only twenty minutes:
“Qing-Yi.”
This took the “Qing” from Zhang Qinglan’s name as a homophone for lightness, and the “Yi” from Yi Junling’s name.
The top-voted comment read: The lightness of doing things effortlessly. May the days ahead of them, just like this name, treat heavy matters as if they were light.
The battle report at 12:00 that night showed that the view count for the Wives Traveling Together pilot episode surpassed 80 million. Among the four CPs, the best actress and singing diva group ranked first in popularity, and Qing-Yi ranked second.
For a scientist and professor pairing with zero fan foundation and a pure civilian setup, this second place dropped half of the variety show circle’s jaws.
