After returning, she began searching for apartments online and submitted several resumes. Given Gu Beichen’s attitude earlier, he had made it crystal clear that he was choosing Su Mumu. In that case, she had to be prepared to be fired.
The card Gu Beichen gave her had no spending limit. In the past, she could swipe it without a second thought, but now that they had fallen out, she could no longer use his money with a clear conscience. After paying for her father’s nursing home fees, she didn’t have much cash left; she had to be frugal.
“Sheng Sheng, there’s no need for you to move out. It’s nice living together,” Lin Yang said, giving her a hug.
Jiang Yousheng smiled. “Then what happens when Zhou Jinghuai comes over?”
It hadn’t been easy for the two of them to get to where they were today. If she stayed here, Zhou Jinghuai would surely have something to say about it.
Lin Yang grumbled, “I didn’t ask him to come.”
“I still need to find a place of my own.”
“What kind of place are you looking for?”
“A small one for now. Once I find a place, I’ll head to the office tomorrow.” Jiang Yousheng didn’t plan on leaving the company easily. As long as she didn’t make mistakes at work, Gu Beichen had no reason to dismiss her.
Lin Yang added, “Gu Jin is back.”
Everyone knew that Gu Jin was Jiang Yousheng’s “white moonlight.” When he first went abroad, she had cried for a long time. It had been four years since they last met; he hadn’t even returned for her coming-of-age ceremony.
At the mention of his name, a strange ripple went through Jiang Yousheng’s heart. “When did he get back? I had no idea.”
“A few days ago, I think.”
Once she found an apartment, she moved in. Lin Yang was busy that day, so she handled the move herself—luckily, she didn’t have much to carry.
The next morning, she tidied herself up and went to the office.
“Secretary Jiang, the CEO wants to see you!” the receptionist told her as she walked in.
Gu Beichen was sitting in his office, eyes fixed on his computer screen. When she entered, he spoke without looking up: “There’s a social engagement tonight.”
It was a command, not a notification. For such a small matter, he could have just had Jiang Huai tell her; yet he insisted she come in person to hear him say it. Was he afraid she wouldn’t show?
Just as he finished, his phone rang. It was Su Mumu.
Jiang Yousheng didn’t ask any questions. She simply said “Okay” and retreated from the office.
Evening arrived quickly. Besides Jiang Yousheng, Gu Beichen only brought Jiang Huai along.
“Change your clothes,” Gu Beichen said, his gaze unreadable as he swept it over her professional suit.
Jiang Huai, standing nearby, handed her the outfit they had prepared. It was a black miniskirt that barely reached her thighs.
Jiang Yousheng frowned. Usually, when she accompanied him to social events, he never asked her to change. Making her dress like this today—was she expected to act as an escort and pour drinks?
Her face instantly darkened.
“If you don’t want the job, you can leave,” Gu Beichen said, seeing right through her thoughts.
Was he trying to teach her a lesson for being “disobedient”?
Jiang Yousheng clenched her fists. “If I perform well this time and we secure the project, will you fulfill the promise you made before?”
“What promise?” Gu Beichen’s eyes were filled with confusion, as if he genuinely didn’t remember promising her a thing.
Jiang Yousheng pulled out their agreement. “See for yourself.”
Gu Beichen glanced at the thin sheet of paper in her hand and let out a leisurely laugh. “Didn’t you say you were quitting? The one-year mark isn’t up yet. You want to terminate the contract early without paying me compensation, and yet you have the nerve to ask me for shares?”
“Well, you’re engaged to Su Mumu now. That counts as a breach of contract too,” Jiang Yousheng shot back, biting her lip.
Gu Beichen replied, “It doesn’t say anywhere in there that I can’t get engaged.”
Without waiting for her response, he stepped into the car.
Feeling a sense of powerlessness, Jiang Yousheng tightened her grip on the paper and went to the lounge to change.
She truly was a stunning creature. A delicate black bow sat at the base of her neck, highlighting her elegant, snow-white throat. She was perfectly curved in all the right places, the fabric clinging to her slender waist. Below the hem were two pale, shapely legs. The black of the dress made her skin appear to glow.
Gu Beichen’s Adam’s apple shifted. He cast a dark, brooding glance at her. “Get in the car.”
They were silent the entire way. Jiang Yousheng scrolled through her phone out of boredom, acting as if the fight from a few days ago never happened. Even with Gu Beichen sitting right next to her, she treated him as if he were invisible.
In the past, she would have leaned in proactively to please him. Now, she was treating him like thin air?
Jiang Yousheng, you’re something else!
