SAVANNA (VERONICA)
‘Race with me.’
His words hushed the silence.
I didn’t respond though, instead, simply stared at him, letting the tension escalate.
Danny’s breath seemed unstable, then, he slowly calmed down, running fingers through his hair, his jaw tightening as he regained control.
“Forget one million,” his eyes locked on mine.
“Race with me again, and this time, It’ll be two.” He paused for a second, then…
“So…?”
I, however, though wasn’t in a mood for any more Race, but his offer— ‘hmm, now that seems interesting.’
My brow raised with anticipation.
Yet, I chose to be silent and see his next move.
Danny’s face contorted with confusion when I didn’t speak, then slowly, he stepped forward, his fingers continuously running through his hair— probably a habit when losing control.
“Fine—” He sighed, “Three million?”
My lips twitched slowly.
Seems like it was working.
Guys like him never hesitated to spend when their worth was questioned, even though it was a waste, and Danny tonight had experienced something new.
‘Well, well, seems, I’m not leaving any short tonight…’
Throwing him a bored glance, I turned around to leave.
If I was not wrong, I’d not be leaving this place so soon, and—
“Fine— five million!” His tone, almost desperate, echoed in the quiet night.
My steps halted, and my lips twitched to the plan.
Ah— I won again, ain’t I?
A few gasps and murmurs rippled through the crowd.
All eyes were on us now.
“Look, I’ll give you five million this time.
Race again.” His voice came again.
This time, I slowly turned to face him.
“Fine— five million it is.”
Immediately his shoulders softened, his tension seemed to have melted.
What unnecessary tensions eh?
I couldn’t help but smirk bitterly at these spoiled brats.
But, good for me, I’d be leaving with five million, except if he didn’t turn like the Abrahams.
‘Damn!’ The curse rolled unfiltered just at the reminder of those stingy Abrahams’.
“I want a better car this time.” I said, gazing at the round of expensive cars there.
Although none could match his limited edition Lamborghini, at least better than that fragile Mustang.
His lips curved, “how about mine?” He pointed at his car.
More gasps echoed, louder this time.
Honestly, I was surprised.
My eyes narrowed at him for a second, then I shrugged.
“Deal.”
“Whoa!” He chuckled, looking amused.
“You ain’t thinking I’ll be going against you, right?”
My brows arched.
What was this guy planning actually?
His chuckle was more amused this time.
“I ride with you.
I want to see how you drive, while one of my friends will race against you.”
I only shrugged and without a word, I walked toward his car and entered the driver’s seat.
A few seconds later, he came beside me.
His eyes still filled with amusement. This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.
“You’re one of a kind, ain’t ya?”
I didn’t say much, only tightened my seat belt.
Finally, some worthy cars to drive.
Ah— it had been quite a long time, eh?
“This isn’t like that Old Mustang.” Danny’s words came from the side.
“you gotta—”
“I know,” I interrupted, my tone was calm with a cold edge, as usual.
“I’ve had two of these.” I added.
He stopped, his eyes staring at me, widening and then— he let out a short laugh, shaking his head in disbelief.
“Yeah?
Sure you have.” His hands moved again around the seat belt.
“Do you even know how rare this thing is?
Only five in the world.
I practically begged for a month and was an obedient son, only then dad got me one…” He kept going on.
I didn’t argue, instead, I arranged the rearview mirror.
I never had a need or mood to throw like them.
I had nine cars in my previous life, seven of them were racing cars.
Two of them were this limited series Lamborghini, red and light green…
The other two— well, they were taken by Abrahams’.
Damn!
Those stingy Abrahams!
Can buy such expensive cars yet be unable to repay the life saver?— I couldn’t help but scoff.
“Pathetic!”
“What!?” Danny stopped his nagging and stared at me.
Blinking in confusion.
“Nothing.” Dismissing, I took the car to the starting point.
Soon, the flag arose.
Three— Two— One…
The race started.
The engine roared in response to my touch.
This time, against us was a Bugatti.
My lips only twitched with a challenge.
I was too familiar with this car, as I had ridden my red one too much.
I’d loved it.
Damn!
I missed my babies.
As we approached the first curve, Danny instinctively eased off the gas.
Instead, I pressed harder.
The car leaned into the curve, obedient and perfect.
The car listened to me as though it had been waiting for me.
“Good boy.” My smirk rose.
“Damn…” Beside me, Danny exhaled quietly.
His grip was tight but trying to be calm.
Yeah?
What a nuisance.
I never needed to show off.
Racing was a thrill and it was my favourite passion— beside shading blood.
The thrill in the race had always calmed my nerves.
And after such a boring and pathetic month I needed it.
The Bugatti racer wasn’t even closer.
It felt as though I was racing with the wind.
Didn’t matter though— I loved the feeling of this excitement…
Then, came the last turn, and I cut through it very precisely, yet too fast.
I, for a moment, forgot that there was someone beside me.
I was lost in my driving.
Only when Danny muttered a curse under his breath I recalled his presence…
By the time we crossed the finish line, the gap was undeniable.
Danny, for a moment, looked stunned.
His breathing was uneven despite his attempt to remain calm.
Then, slowly, he exhaled and turned to me.
“I’m now starting to believe the impossible— you truly are something girl!” His tone rushing with excitement, eyes beaming with admiration.
“I’m at Astor Heights University,” he said finally.
“We’ve got a private track.
You should come to the race sometime.
You’ll meet more skill guys.
They’ll like you.
Besides, you’ll have more cars…” He started again.
I, however, glanced at the car hood.
The note from before flew somewhere due to racing.
Therefore, I took out my pen and paper again, scribbled my account number on it and, without a word, held it toward him.
He paused, glancing at my hand, blinked, and took it.
“Don’t forget the money.” I warned him for the last time, before walking out of the car, leaving the dumbfounded Daniel Carter in his own car.
Well, for a few days, money tension seemed off now.
I could finally have some rest…
