Evelyn looked at Grandfather Blackwood and spoke with absolute sincerity.
“Grandfather, Alexander will definitely stand again.
You mustn’t lose hope.”
Her voice was gentle, but her conviction was unmistakable.
If the doctors here couldn’t cure Alexander, she would take him abroad.
There had to be a treatment somewhere in the world.
There had to be a miracle.
And if, in the end, no treatment worked…
Then she would become Alexander’s legs.
She would take care of him for the rest of his life.
She would stay beside him, push his wheelchair wherever he wanted to go, and never allow him to feel that his life had ended simply because he could no longer walk.
And…
She would even have his children.
After all, an injury to his legs wouldn’t prevent him from having children.
The thought suddenly made Evelyn’s cheeks burn.
She quickly composed herself.
Marriage and children were perfectly natural things.
What was there to be embarrassed about?
Grandfather Blackwood’s expression softened.
“Evelyn is right.”
His voice was firm.
“Alexander will definitely stand again.”
He swept his stern gaze across the room.
“And from now on, if anyone dares to speak nonsense in this house, they can leave.”
His eyes settled directly on Hannah.
The warning couldn’t have been clearer.
Hannah’s face stiffened.
Alexander’s father also felt his heart skip a beat.
He quickly forced a smile and nodded.
“Of course, Dad.
Whoever dares to say such things, I won’t let them off either.
Don’t worry.”
Hannah’s expression became increasingly unpleasant.
He was already disabled.
Why was the old man still treating him like some priceless treasure?
The old man must have become senile with age!
Grandfather Blackwood gave a quiet snort.
He didn’t even bother responding to his second son’s flattery.
He might be old, but he wasn’t senile.
In fact, he understood the Blackwood family better than anyone.
He knew exactly what the second household was like.
For years, he had tolerated their behavior for the sake of his grandson, Damien.
Damien had always performed well.
He was disciplined, ambitious, and capable.
For the sake of that grandson, Grandfather Blackwood had repeatedly overlooked the unpleasant behavior of Damien’s parents.
He had never imagined that, in the end, he would misjudge the person he had placed so much faith in.
His gaze darkened.
“Dad, Alexander is tired.
I’ll take him upstairs so he can rest.”
Aunt Eleanor didn’t want to remain in the living room any longer.
She could see the hidden satisfaction in Hannah’s eyes.
She knew exactly what the other woman was thinking.
But before she could move, Mark stepped forward.
“Aunt Eleanor, let me do it.”
From now on, he would be Alexander’s legs.
Wherever his commander needed to go, Mark would take him there.
He would never leave Alexander’s side.
Evelyn had been waiting for an opportunity to speak privately with Alexander.
When she saw Mark preparing to push the wheelchair, she immediately stepped forward with a smile.
“Brother Mark, I’ll help you.”
Mark scratched his head awkwardly.
“Miss Vale, you can just call me Mark.
Why do you keep calling me Brother?”
Evelyn smiled.
“Then don’t call me Miss Vale either.”
She tilted her head slightly.
“Just call me Evelyn.”
“Sure!”
Mark immediately agreed.
He had actually been finding “Miss Vale” a little awkward anyway.
Calling her sister-in-law would have been perfectly fine.
But Alexander had insisted that he call her Miss Vale.
Honestly, Mark didn’t understand what his commander was thinking.
Evelyn was his fiancée.
Wasn’t calling her sister-in-law more natural?
Alexander suddenly cleared his throat.
He gave Mark a cold, dissatisfied glance.
The young soldier’s chatter seemed endless.
Mark immediately understood the warning.
He chuckled sheepishly and grabbed the handles of the wheelchair.
“Alright, Commander.
Let’s go.”
He pushed Alexander toward his room.
Alexander’s bedroom had originally been on the second floor.
But after his injury, the room had been moved to the first floor.
There were no stairs to navigate, and it was much easier for him to enter and leave the house.
Evelyn followed behind them without hesitation.
She didn’t care whether it was appropriate for an unmarried young woman to enter a grown man’s bedroom.
What did propriety matter?
She had already made up her mind.
In this lifetime, she wanted Alexander.
She wanted to be his wife.
She wanted to spend the rest of her life beside him.
So why should she care what other people thought?
Aunt Eleanor watched Evelyn follow Alexander and Mark toward the hallway.
She had originally wanted to go with them.
But after seeing Evelyn take the initiative, she stopped.
Perhaps…
Her son would not be alone after all.
Just then, a breathless voice came from behind them.
“Grandfather…
Uncle…
Aunt…”
Everyone turned around.
Claire Vale came rushing toward them.
Her face was deathly pale.
She looked as though she could barely breathe.
She had originally planned to arrive later.
But something unexpected had happened while she was waiting outside.
A gust of wind had suddenly blown through the trees.
Several caterpillars had fallen from the branches.
Claire had been so frightened that she nearly screamed.
She had always stayed indoors and was particularly sensitive to things like insects.
She couldn’t bear sitting beneath that tree any longer.
So she had immediately rushed back into the house.
What Claire didn’t know was that the tree she had been sitting beneath was a type of tree where caterpillars frequently gathered.
Even without wind, a few could fall from the branches.
When the wind blew strongly, they could come down in numbers.
Evelyn knew that very well.
That was precisely why she had deliberately allowed Claire to sit there earlier.
It was a small punishment for the woman who had once helped destroy her life.
When Claire entered the room, she immediately noticed the strange atmosphere.
Everyone looked serious.
No one was smiling.
The air felt heavy.
A secret smile appeared in Claire’s heart.
That foolish Evelyn must have already mentioned breaking off her engagement with Alexander.
Grandfather Blackwood must have become furious.
And now that Evelyn had offended him, he would no longer support her.
This was the perfect opportunity for Claire to step forward and play the role of the kind, understanding sister.
She quickly approached Grandfather Blackwood.
“Grandfather, Evelyn simply couldn’t accept what happened to Alexander.”
Her voice was gentle and concerned.
“She probably spoke without thinking because she was overwhelmed.”
Claire lowered her eyes.
“Please don’t be angry with her.”
Then she added earnestly,
“I’ll talk to her properly later.
I’ll persuade her to think things through.”
Claire hadn’t noticed Evelyn standing quietly near the stairs.
She genuinely believed Evelyn had already left after mentioning the broken engagement.
That thought made the corners of her lips lift slightly.
Everything was finally going according to plan.
Or so she thought.
Because the person she believed had abandoned Alexander…
Was standing only a few steps away.
And Evelyn had heard every word.
