Sophia didn’t sleep that night either.

She lay in the dark with her phone face down on the nightstand, staring at the ceiling and listened to the city forty-one floors below and thought about four words.

Not Aurora’s name.

Not a direct accusation.

Just enough to show that Seraphina had seen something on that pavement and drawn the right conclusion and wanted Sophia to know she had.

It was a warning dressed as a threat.

Or a threat dressed as a warning.

Either way it meant one thing — Seraphina was scared enough to reach first.

Sophia turned that over in her mind until three in the morning and then she got up, made coffee and sat at the kitchen table in the dark and started making calculations.

***

The notifications started at six.

Sasha had sent seven messages between midnight and now.

Sophia opened the first one.

*It’s everywhere.

You need to call me.*

She called at six fifteen.

Sasha picked up on the first ring.

“How bad,” Sophia said.

“Depends on your definition.” The sound of a keyboard in the background.

“Lumière’s following went up sixty thousand overnight. The gala video has two point three million views. Three major outlets want interviews.”

A pause.

“The Daily Post is running a piece on your connection to Blackwood Enterprises. They don’t have the full story but they have enough to ask questions.”

“What questions specifically.”

“Whether your return is personal or professional. Whether attending the Blackwood Gala was a statement. Whether there is a history between Sophia Bennett of Lumière and Andrew Blackwood.” Another pause.

“They’re calling it a mystery.”

Sophia looked at the window.

The sky outside was still dark.

“Don’t confirm anything,” she said.

“Don’t deny anything. Standard Lumière position.”

“That’s what I told them.”

“Good. Keep telling them.”

“Sophia.” Sasha’s voice shifted.

“There’s a photograph.”

Sophia went still.

“You and Andrew on the terrace. Someone had a long lens. You can’t see the conversation but the body language is very clear.” A breath.

“It’s running tomorrow regardless of whether we comment.”

Sophia said nothing for a moment.

A long lens on the terrace at the Blackwood Gala.

That was not accidental.

Someone had placed it deliberately and she needed to know who before she decided what to do about it.

“Send it to me,” she said.

It came through thirty seconds later.

She looked at it for a long time.

Andrew and herself, twenty feet apart on the terrace.

His expression unreadable from that distance.

Hers — she studied hers carefully.

Chin level.

Shoulders back.

The ivory dress catching the terrace light.

She looked untouchable in that photograph.

She looked exactly like what she had spent five years becoming.

“Run it,” she said.

Silence.

“Sorry?”

“Don’t suppress it. Let them run it.” Sophia set the phone down on the table.

“Everything they find will be true. I was his wife. I helped build everything he has. I left.” She looked at her reflection in the dark window across the room.

“Let them print that.”

Elena appeared in the kitchen doorway at seven with coffee and the expression she wore when she had already read everything and was deciding how much to say.

Sophia took the coffee.

“I know.”

“The photograph is good actually,” Elena said carefully.

“You look—”

“I know what I look like.”

Elena leaned against the counter.

“Seraphina will have seen it.”

“Yes.”

“And Andrew.”

Elena was quiet for a moment.

Then: “Did you sleep at all?”

“Enough.”

“That means no.” She wrapped both hands around her mug.

“What are you going to do about the message?”

Sophia had told her at midnight, standing in the hallway outside Aurora’s room, keeping her voice low.

Elena had gone very quiet in the way she did when she was angry and trying not to show it.

“Nothing yet,” Sophia said.

“She’s threatening Aurora, Sophia.”

“She’s testing me. Seeing if I panic.” Elena looked at the kitchen door.

Behind it the hallway was quiet, Aurora still sleeping.

“I won’t panic.”

“And if she goes to Andrew?”

“Then she goes to Andrew.” Sophia’s voice was steady.

“I’ve planned for that too.”

Elena studied her face for a long moment.

Whatever she saw there made her stop pushing.

Down the hall Aurora’s door opened.

Small feet.

Walking out of her room

Then her voice, bright and unhurried, calling from the hallway.

“Maman. Can we go back to the park today? I want to see if Gerald is still there.”

Sophia looked at Elena.

Elena looked back at her.

“Yes, baby,” Sophia called.

“We can go to the park.”

She said it calmly.

Steadily.

But her hand around the coffee mug had tightened without her meaning it to and she did not loosen it until she heard Aurora’s feet moving back down the hallway toward the bathroom.

Seraphina had photographed her daughter on that pavement.

And now she was sending messages in the dark.

Sophia had come to New York to collect every debt.

It appeared Seraphina intended to remind her exactly how much was owed.
