“So you’re saying you’ve forgotten everything from before?” Pei Jinxu looked unconvinced.

“Amnesia is the least of it. Just think, I fell into a lake in the dead of winter and was only pulled out an hour later. My body was already stiff.” As Ning Wanwan spoke, a thought suddenly struck her. Why would a Guifei, favored above all in the Six Palaces, be left in a lake for an hour before being rescued?

Ning Wanwan’s mind went to conspiracy theories. When she was rescued, her body was said to have been frozen stiff, like a female ghost.Full novel: After the Guifei Requested to Leave the Palace, His Majesty Regretted It — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

They had thought she was a lost cause, so her survival was a shock. No wonder the people in the palace were so afraid of her. It probably wasn’t just because of her bad temper before, but because she had “come back from the dead.”

So, who was it that wanted to harm her? She had transmigrated into this body after the original owner died. With no script and no memories, she couldn’t get any useful information from the palace maids either, so she had to let the matter drop for now.

If she hadn’t transmigrated, the original owner would have likely been buried by now. Since she hadn’t died, she feared that the person who harmed her would strike again. All she needed to do now was wait quietly for them to make their move.

Moreover, even Pei Jinxu couldn’t find anything out about her accident. Was the other party that good at hiding, or was this whole affair a blatant cover-up?

This emperor probably didn’t love her as much as he appeared to. Childhood sweethearts, a deeply devoted couple—what a load of crap.

Ning Wanwan had more or less adapted to everything here, but the original owner’s consciousness had yet to completely dissipate, lingering like a vengeful spirit.

Ning Wanwan hadn’t wanted to bother with it all, but the more time she spent with Pei Jinxu, the more she dreamed of the original “Ning Wanwan’s” life. It was as if she herself was the original “Ning Wanwan.” These dreams flashed by like a revolving lantern, the pain intensifying the more she thought about them. In the end, Ning Wanwan couldn’t even tell if the pain was hers or the original owner’s.

Ning Wanwan thought of the ghost movies she had seen before and wondered if this original owner wanted her to do something.

If she really was expected to do something, then Ning Wanwan had to admit she didn’t have the brains for it.

That evening, Pei Jinxu and Ning Wanwan changed into commoner’s clothes and went to the bustling main street.

“It’s so lively,” Ning Wanwan said, truly seeing for the first time what a bustling, prosperous ancient street looked like. It was even more magnificent than what was shown on television.

The market street was abuzz with voices, the roads flat and wide. Multiple markets were open at once, with thousands of lanterns and fires illuminating the azure clouds. A bright moon hung high in the sky, and street vendors were still hawking their wares, their calls blending with the music drifting from magnificent pavilions, creating what seemed to be the most beautiful scene on earth.

Just then, a woman selling wine appeared at the open window of a magnificent pavilion. She had a graceful figure and stunning makeup, every frown and smile exuding charm.

“Young Master, would you care to buy some wine? A drink of this will guarantee you a life of drunken dreams, unable to stop.” The woman covered her lips with her hand as she smiled, then casually plucked an exquisite sachet from her slender waist and tossed it down. The sachet sailed through the air before landing securely in Pei Jinxu’s arms.

Onlookers chuckled, and someone even teased, “Jing Niang, don’t go randomly flirting with the young master. The young lady next to him might get jealous!”

“Huh?” Ning Wanwan pointed at herself. “Me?”

Many people burst into laughter. Ning Wanwan was hit with a wave of secondhand embarrassment, her face flushing and her heart pounding so hard she could have dug a castle out of the ground right there. Oh, probably not, since castles weren’t allowed in ancient times.

Pei Jinxu, however, was at ease. He held the sachet in his hand and looked at it for a moment before tossing it back.

The pavilion wasn’t high, and the woman caught the sachet again.

Pei Jinxu’s light chuckle reached her ears. “It’s not easy to coax a jealous young lady. I’ll come back another day.” With that, his large hand wrapped around Ning Wanwan’s and he began to lead her away.

“Hmph, how boring.” The woman in the pavilion let out a light, smiling humph before turning and leaving.

People came and went on the main street, and Pei Jinxu and Ning Wanwan weaved through the crowd, enjoying themselves immensely.

“Wow, these things are so pretty,” Ning Wanwan exclaimed, looking at the exquisite pearl hairpins and various animal-shaped trinkets at a stall.

Seeing that Ning Wanwan liked them, the stall owner enthusiastically promoted his goods, showering them with praise.

“Do you like them?” Pei Jinxu asked.

“Duh,” Ning Wanwan felt like she liked everything. Without another word, Pei Jinxu bought the entire lot.

Ning Wanwan’s eyes lit up. “Pei Jinxu, you’re so rich.” The moment she said it, she felt it was inappropriate. He was the Son of Heaven, the emperor. The entire world was his; this small amount of money was nothing.

The stall owner bit the gold ingot, and after confirming it was real, his face broke into a wide grin. He repeatedly praised the two as a perfect match, a talented man and a beautiful woman made for each other.

“Please come again!” the vendor called out from behind them.

Seeing how wealthy they were, the other stall owners nearby put all their effort into promoting their own goods. And as it happened, the sheltered Ning Wanwan liked everything she saw, so Pei Jinxu ended up buying out nearly every street.

They had no attendants with them, so Pei Jinxu carried everything, his arms laden with large and small bags.

Ning Wanwan couldn’t help but want to laugh at the sight of him. She had never dreamed that after transmigrating, she would not only get a husband for free, but that he would also be a young, handsome emperor who was gentle, considerate, and doted on her.

Their current appearance reminded Ning Wanwan of the countless couples she used to see on the streets in modern times. They seemed to be just like this—the girl acting spoiled, the boy indulging her.

Ning Wanwan felt herself starting to fall for him. Even though he was an emperor with three thousand beauties in his harem, at this moment, he belonged only to her.

Ning Wanwan: Life can be summed up in one word—happiness.
