Wen Fufu had already been living in Taohua Village for several days.
People in the countryside valued going to bed early and waking up early, so the biological clock she had developed while living in the city gradually adjusted as well. Every morning after finishing breakfast early, she lay on the reclining chair in the courtyard, basking in the sun and eating some snacks. It was incredibly comfortable.
Wen Fufu could not help but sigh once again that nurturing a pregnancy in the countryside was simply wonderful. Nothing could be more relaxing.
However, being pregnant did not mean she could just sit around all day. She still needed moderate exercise, which would be beneficial for the baby.
So Wen Fufu gave herself a task: she would make good use of the flowerpots in the courtyard and plant several kinds of flowers. When they bloomed, she would be able to admire them.
Recently it had become popular for people to create their own countryside cottages. Wen Fufu found the idea very interesting. Since she now had plenty of time and there was also enough space in the yard, she felt it would be a waste not to make use of it.
Although it was already autumn, the morning sun was still quite scorching. Wen Fufu wore a long-sleeved shirt and a straw hat. Holding a small shovel she had borrowed from Shen Xiulan’s house, she squatted in front of the flowerpots and began removing weeds and loosening the soil. Then she sprinkled the flower seeds she had bought from the market at the village entrance and buried them carefully into the soil one by one.
“This should be the right way to plant them, right?” Wen Fufu muttered to herself while staring at the mound of soil, some dirt smeared across her face.
Still feeling unsure, she ran back into the house, took out her phone, and searched for methods of planting flowers. After memorizing the instructions, she picked up the small shovel again, digging here and filling soil there. When all the empty spots had been covered with seeds, she finally stood up, wiped the sweat from her forehead, and smiled with satisfaction.
“Now all that’s left is watering them.”
“Fufu-jie, look what I brought you!”
Xiao Tingting ran in excitedly from outside, carrying a large red plastic bag in her hand.
Wen Fufu was watering the plants. Seeing Xiao Tingting arrive, she stopped and asked, “Tingting, what are you carrying in that bag?”
Xiao Tingting placed the bag on the ground and opened it. A large, round, bright-green watermelon was revealed.
“Ta-da! Fufu-jie, look! My mom just picked it from the field and told me to bring it over so we could eat it together.”
Wen Fufu squatted down and tapped on the watermelon a few times. A crisp sound echoed from inside.
“This watermelon is huge. Aunt Shen was too generous.”
“Why are you being so polite with us? This size is just perfect. According to me, it should be divided like this—half for you, half for me, and half for the baby in your belly.” Xiao Tingting stared at Wen Fufu’s stomach and giggled foolishly.
Even if she herself did not eat, her future godson inside Wen Fufu’s belly definitely had to eat.
Ever since Xiao Tingting had learned that Wen Fufu was pregnant, she had been extremely curious about the little life in her belly. Every day she came over whenever she had the chance just to touch it. Over time she had grown emotionally attached to it and constantly insisted that when the baby was born she would become the child’s godmother.
Wen Fufu had no way to refuse her enthusiasm, so she could only agree.
Wen Fufu carried the watermelon into the kitchen and cut it into two halves—one half for herself and one half for Xiao Tingting.
Xiao Tingting automatically carried a small stool outside and sat down in the corridor. Holding the large watermelon Wen Fufu handed to her, she scooped out a mouthful and stuffed it into her mouth.
While eating, she sighed happily.
“This life is really too blissful.”
Wen Fufu deeply agreed. “It really is.”
After speaking, she scooped a spoonful from the center of the watermelon and put it into her mouth. She narrowed her almond-shaped eyes in satisfaction. The cool sweetness instantly drove away the heat inside her body.
“Fufu-jie, your house is really nice. The wind keeps blowing into the hall. It’s even more comfortable than using a fan.”
“Your family’s small Western-style house is quite nice too. It should be better than mine,” Wen Fufu said with a smile.
“It’s nice, but your place has a kind of rustic beauty. Staying here makes people feel very calm,” Xiao Tingting said as she stretched her body and sighed contentedly.
“If you like it, come over often. I get quite bored staying here alone.”
“Of course. Even if you didn’t say it, I’d still come often.”
“Tingting, if we want to send a package in our village, where do we usually go?” Wen Fufu asked.
The next season’s jewelry from her studio was about to be released. She still had her original design drafts and planned to mail them out in advance so that their schedule would not be delayed.
“You can send it at the convenience store at the village entrance. Fufu-jie, you used to receive packages all the time. Did you forget so quickly?” Xiao Tingting looked at her in confusion.
Wen Fufu paused slightly and covered it up casually.
“I haven’t come back for a long time. I just wanted to ask in case the location had changed.”
“The place is still the same as before. But Fufu-jie, what are you sending?” Xiao Tingting asked.
“I’m sending some drafts to the studio. It’s for work.”
“Fufu-jie, I really envy you. You already know what job you want to do. I’m still thinking about what I should do after graduation,” Xiao Tingting said while resting her chin on her hand and sighing.
“Tingting, your major is teacher education, right?”
“Yes.”
Wen Fufu looked at her curiously. “Don’t you want to become a teacher?”
Xiao Tingting shook her head.
“How should I put it… I don’t mind being a teacher. I just want to try other jobs too. I don’t want to hang myself on just one tree.”
“Then try more things. Isn’t that what youth is all about?” Wen Fufu blinked at her and laughed.
“Fufu-jie, you sound so unconventional,” Xiao Tingting teased.
“I’m giving you advice.”
“The advice is good, it’s just very unconventional. Hahaha.”
“Hahaha. Actually I think so too. Tingting, you still have a year before graduation. You can worry about these things after school starts again.”
“Fufu-jie, you’re right. I won’t think about it anymore.”
“What are you two chatting about? I could hear your chattering from outside,” Shen Xiulan said with a smile as she stepped through the doorway.
“Aunt Shen, you’re here,” Wen Fufu said with a smile.
“Did you plant something in the flowerpots in the yard?” Shen Xiulan asked curiously when she noticed the freshly turned soil.
“I was bored, so I planted some flowers and plants,” Wen Fufu replied.
“Flowers and plants are good. Looking at beautiful flowers every day will make your mood better. And a good mood is good for the baby in your belly,” Shen Xiulan said approvingly.
Wen Fufu scratched her head and smiled shyly.
“Aunt Shen, did you come to look for Tingting?”
“Mom, what did you come to see me for?” Xiao Tingting asked.
Shen Xiulan waved her hand.
“I didn’t come to look for you. I came to see your Fufu-jie.”
“Little Fu, this is for you.”
Shen Xiulan took out a black kraft envelope she had brought from the convenience store at the village entrance. Intricate golden patterns were stamped on its surface.
“This is an urgent express letter. When I passed by the convenience store, Old Liu called me over. Since our houses are close, he asked me to bring it to you.”
It was the first time Shen Xiulan had seen such a beautiful envelope. It looked like something used by nobles or high-ranking officials.
Under the light, the golden patterns on the envelope shimmered brilliantly.
Even gold itself might not have looked this dazzling.
