A Question Without Escape

The yard went completely still.

Even the wind seemed to hesitate.Full novel: After transmigrating into a villainous ger — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Lin Shu felt every pair of eyes shift toward him at once.

Zhao Jun’s suspicion sharpened.

Zhao Mei froze mid-breath.

Even little Zhao An peeked out nervously from behind Zhao Cheng’s leg.

Zhao Cheng stood in front of Lin Shu, unmoving.

Waiting.

The question wasn’t loud.

But it carried weight.

Was he wrong?

Lin Shu felt his throat tighten.

If he answered incorrectly, everything he had slowly built could collapse in a single moment.

He looked at Zhao Cheng.

Then at the children.

Then back to the ground.

A long pause.

Finally, he spoke.

“No.”

One word.

Clear.

Zhao Jun flinched slightly.

Lin Shu continued carefully, “He wasn’t wrong about who I used to be.”

Silence deepened.

“But,” Lin Shu added, lifting his head, “he’s wrong about what I am now.”

A faint breeze passed through the yard.

Zhao Cheng didn’t move.

Didn’t react.

But his eyes narrowed slightly.

Like he was measuring the truth of those words.

Zhao Jun scoffed immediately.

“Convenient answer.”

Lin Shu didn’t argue.

He understood why the boy was suspicious.

Trust couldn’t be rebuilt with sentences.

Only time.

Zhao Mei quietly spoke, almost unsure of herself.

“…So you’re saying you really stopped seeing him?”

Lin Shu nodded once.

“Yes.”

Zhao Jun immediately snapped, “And we’re supposed to just believe that?”

Lin Shu looked at him calmly.

“No.”

That shut the boy up for a moment.

Lin Shu continued, voice steady.

“You’re not supposed to believe it right now.”

A pause.

“I don’t think I can earn belief in a day… or a week.”

His gaze softened slightly.

“But I can earn it eventually.”

The yard fell into uneasy silence again.

Zhao Cheng finally spoke.

“Why did you change?”

Lin Shu stiffened slightly.

That question again.

The one he couldn’t fully answer.

Not truthfully.

Not safely.

He chose carefully.

“…I almost died,” he said quietly.

“And I realized I didn’t want to be that kind of person anymore.”

Zhao Cheng studied him for a long moment.

Then asked something sharper.

“People don’t change just because they’re afraid of dying.”

Lin Shu didn’t deny it.

Because that part was true.

So he added softly:

“Then maybe I didn’t change because I was afraid.”

A pause.

“Maybe I changed because I finally saw what I had become.”

Silence.

Even Zhao Jun stopped interrupting.

Zhao Cheng’s expression didn’t soften.

But it also didn’t harden.

It stayed…

still.

Like a locked door that had not decided whether to open or close.

Finally, Zhao Cheng turned slightly.

“Dinner,” he said simply.

That was it.

No conclusion.

No judgment.

Just…

moving on.

That night, the atmosphere at the table was different again.

Not warm.

Not fully relaxed.

But less hostile than before.

Zhao An ate without hesitation for the first time.

Zhao Mei spoke a few small words.

Zhao Jun still glared occasionally-but less intensely.

Lin Shu quietly ate in silence.

Halfway through the meal, Zhao An suddenly dropped his chopsticks.

Everyone froze.

The little boy looked panicked.

“I-I dropped it…”

Before Zhao Mei could react, Lin Shu already leaned down and picked it up.

Wiped it clean carefully.

Then handed it back.

“Here.”

Zhao An blinked.

Then took it hesitantly.

“…Thank you,” the boy whispered.

The room went quiet again.

But this time, it wasn’t tension.

It was surprise.

Zhao Jun stared like he had just witnessed something unnatural.

Even Zhao Mei paused mid-bite.

Zhao Cheng looked at Lin Shu.

Long.

Quiet.

Then said:

“Eat.”

Lin Shu nodded.

But as he lowered his head again, he felt it.

Not trust.

Not forgiveness.

But something shifting underneath everything.

Like a foundation that had stopped cracking…

for just one night.

Later, outside under the dim moonlight, Lin Shu stood alone for a moment.

The broken gate still leaned awkwardly.

Repairs were halfway done.

He looked at it.

Then at the quiet house behind him.

And exhaled slowly.

This world didn’t accept him yet.

But it also hadn’t rejected him completely anymore.

And that difference…

was everything.
