The Man Who Doesn’t Raise His Voice
The debt collector’s smile faltered.
Zhao Cheng didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t even look angry in the usual sense.
But his grip on the man’s wrist tightened slightly.
Just slightly.
Enough to make bones feel like they were being measured.
The man tried to pull away.
“H-Hey… we were just talking-”
Zhao Cheng didn’t let go.
“What did you call her?” he asked calmly.
Silence.
The word wife suddenly felt heavier in the room than the debt itself.
Lin Shu stood frozen.
It wasn’t the word that shocked him.
It was the way Zhao Cheng said it.
Like it still had meaning…
even after everything.
The debt collector forced a laugh.
“We didn’t mean anything bad. Just a joke. You know how village talk is-”
Crack.
Zhao Cheng twisted his wrist slightly.
The man yelped.
“Don’t joke in my house,” Zhao Cheng said.
Still calm.
Still quiet.
But now everyone understood.
This wasn’t a man who shouted.
This was a man who ended things quietly.
The other two men shifted nervously, gripping their sticks tighter.
Zhao Jun stared in disbelief.
Even he had never seen his father act like this before.
Zhao Cheng finally released the man’s wrist.
The debt collector immediately stepped back, rubbing his arm, face pale with anger and fear.
“You think you can threaten us?” he snapped, trying to recover his pride.
“We have official records! If you don’t pay-”
Zhao Cheng walked past him.
He didn’t even look at him anymore.
Instead, he walked straight into the house and placed his farming tools down.
Then he spoke.
“Zhao Mei.”
“Yes, Father,” she answered quickly.
“Go to the grain storage. Check how much we have left.”
“…Yes.”
The calmness in his tone made everything feel more terrifying.
The debt collector frowned.
“Hey! I’m still talking-”
Zhao Cheng finally turned his head slightly.
Just enough for his eyes to be seen.
Cold.
Empty.
“Talk,” he said.
“But don’t stand in my doorway.”
The man swallowed hard.
For a moment, no one moved.
Then Zhao Cheng walked to the table, picked up a cloth, and began wiping his hands like nothing had happened.
As if the intruders were already irrelevant.
That silence was worse than shouting.
Outside, one of the debt collectors muttered, “This guy is crazy… let’s just go back and report-”
But the leader glared at him.
“We can’t leave like this,” he hissed.
Then he stepped forward again.
“Zhao Cheng!” he called.
“Don’t think you can scare us. We’ll come back with more men. You’ll regret-”
A sharp sound cut through the air.
THWACK.
A stone hit the ground right in front of his feet.
Thrown from inside the house.
The leader froze.
Zhao Cheng hadn’t even looked up.
He was still wiping the table.
But Zhao Jun stood near the doorway now, arm still raised from the throw, eyes burning.
“Get lost,” the boy said through clenched teeth.
For a second, something flickered in the debt collector’s expression.
Humiliation.
Then fear won.
“…We’ll be back,” he muttered.
The three men retreated quickly, dragging their pride behind them.
The gate slammed shut again.
Silence returned.
Inside the house, Zhao Jun was still shaking.
Not from fear.
From anger.
Zhao An held onto his sleeve tightly.
Zhao Mei returned shortly after, whispering, “We… we only have a little grain left.”
No one spoke.
Then, finally, Zhao Cheng nodded once.
“Enough for a while.”
He looked at Lin Shu for the first time since returning.
Lin Shu stiffened.
That gaze again.
But this time, something was different.
It wasn’t just suspicion.
It was…
assessment.
Like Zhao Cheng was comparing the person standing in front of him with the one he used to know.
Lin Shu lowered his head slightly.
“I didn’t cause trouble,” he said quietly.
A pause.
Zhao Cheng walked past him.
Then stopped beside him.
Very close.
Lin Shu could feel the faint scent of soil and rain on him.
Zhao Cheng spoke low enough that only Lin Shu could hear.
“You didn’t stop it either.”
Lin Shu’s chest tightened.
Zhao Cheng continued walking, heading outside again.
But before he left the room completely, he added one more sentence.
“Stay alive.”
Then he was gone.
Lin Shu stood still.
Those two words echoed in his mind.
Not kindness.
Not forgiveness.
Just a warning.
Or maybe…
a beginning.
