Chapter 12: Frost and Unspoken Secrets!

All My SSS Beasts Are Cute but Invincible!

Freddie kept the trial booklet, Lydia took the vial of healing compound, Oliver claimed half the silver coins for their shared funds, and Edwin pried the iron buckle from the wall, turning it over once in his fingers before tucking it into his pocket.

"Might be useful for locked mechanisms later," he said, almost to himself.

The rest went back into the cloth sack, which Cecil cinched shut and slung over one shoulder as he led the group back the way they’d come.

They crossed the dead forest toward the shimmering portal, none of them talking much.

The dimensional pull washed over him, brief and disorienting, and the five of them were back in the old library’s basement.

Nobody moved for a long moment. It was the kind of silence that comes after your body finally understands it survived something.

Freddie broke it first, pulling the booklet back out and turning it over in his hands like he needed something to do with them. "Solid haul tonight. Compound, notes, coin, the buckle." He tucked it under his arm, and when he looked up his usual grin was gone. "But honestly? None of that’s what I keep thinking about."

"What are you thinking about," Lydia said, though she already knew.

"That frost mist. What you did to the alpha." Freddie looked straight at Cecil. "That wasn’t luck."

Cecil didn’t answer right away. He just stood there, letting the words settle, the way you let a held breath finally out.

Lydia stepped closer, arms wrapped around herself like she was still cold from the trial ground. "Can I say something? We only put this party together because none of us can carry a fight alone. That’s just — that’s what being Group B means. You get handed the short straw and you make do." She glanced down at Ivy, still coiled loose and trembling faintly around her wrist. "My snake can barely wrap around one jackal’s leg before it shakes her off. When all four of them came at us, I had nothing. And you just — froze their jaws shut. Mid-charge. And then the alpha, an elite, actually backed down."

She shook her head slightly, like she was still trying to make the memory fit.

Robin shifted on Oliver’s shoulder, feathers ruffling, one sharp eye fixed on Cecil.

"I’ve read about this, actually," Oliver said, in the tone of someone who’d been turning it over since it happened. "There’s an entry in the restricted archive — power drawn straight from a tamer’s own soul instead of channeled through the beast. It’s called Soul Resonance. Real Soul Resonance, not the diluted stuff they let Group A dabble in. That’s knight-class material. We don’t even get the theory of it in Group B." He paused. "Half the instructors probably haven’t seen it done."

Edwin hadn’t said anything yet. He was running his thumb slowly along Rust’s shell, the way he did when he was thinking something through before he let it out. When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter than the others’, almost careful.

"How many more secrets are you hiding, Cecil?"

It wasn’t accusing. It just hung there, plain and a little raw, like he genuinely wanted to know and was a little afraid of the answer.

Cecil stood half-lit by the broken window, silver on one side of his face and shadow on the other. On his shoulder, Gwendolyn had gone still and watchful, her tail no longer curled loosely for comfort the way it usually was — it had lifted, subtle but unmistakable, like she was standing a little taller too.

He let the quiet stretch a second longer before he spoke.

"I’m still figuring that out myself." He turned his hand over, looked at his own palm like it might have an answer written on it. "Gwendolyn’s only been teaching me the basics these past few days. What came out tonight — I’ve never done that before. Never even felt it building. You all saw it happen in real time, same as I did."

He lifted his eyes to them, one by one.

"But that’s not actually what I want to say." A beat. "None of you ran. Freddie, you didn’t break formation once. Lydia, you didn’t hesitate, not even when Ivy got knocked flat. Oliver, Edwin — neither of you so much as looked at the portal." His voice steadied, warmed. "Rust took a hit meant for one of us and didn’t even flinch after. Ivy kept binding legs even while she was getting crushed under them. Robin dove in again and again and lost half his tail feathers doing it. Whatever I did tonight — it doesn’t mean anything without what you four did."

Nobody spoke for a second. Then Freddie let out a short laugh, more relief than humor, like something in his chest had finally loosened.

"Okay. Okay, that settles it, then." He looked around at the others. "Group B Team One. Official, as of right now."

"Five of us," Lydia said, and she was smiling now, small but real.

"Five students," Edwin said. "Plus one talking lizard."

Gwendolyn’s head snapped toward him, tail cracking against Cecil’s shoulder. "Dragon. Primordial. Great. Dragon. Say lizard again, beetle boy, and I will personally freeze that bug of yours to the nearest wall."

Edwin pulled Rust protectively against his chest and wisely said nothing further, though the corner of his mouth twitched.

Cecil flexed his fingers — still faintly numb — while Gwendolyn’s tail brushed once against the back of his neck, quiet and grounding.

They climbed up out of the basement into the academy grounds, night settled fully over the towers now, lanterns glowing warm against the dark. They knocked the dust off their uniforms without much ceremony, exchanged tired nods, and started peeling off toward their dorms.

"Theory class tomorrow," Freddie called back, already walking. "We’re sitting together, right?"

Cecil nodded, and Freddie grinned like that had settled something else too, then jogged off.

Lydia and Oliver headed east, talking low, their voices trailing off into the dark. Edwin walked a few steps ahead before stopping, waiting without quite turning around.

"Hand still bothering you?"

"Just numb. It’ll pass by morning."

Edwin made a small sound, not quite a word, and started walking again. A few steps later he stopped once more, back still turned, voice dropped almost to a mutter. "I’ll come wake you up tomorrow. Don’t oversleep."

"Okay."

He didn’t turn around — but Cecil caught it anyway, the flush creeping up the back of his neck just before he ducked into the tower and disappeared.

Cecil stood alone a moment, tipping his head back to the sky. Gwendolyn followed his gaze.

"What’s going on in that head of yours."

"The way the alpha looked at me. Right before it pulled back." He frowned slightly. "It wasn’t just afraid. It was like it recognized something."

Gwendolyn’s voice dropped, low and certain. "It didn’t sense my power, Cecil. It sensed the legacy your father sealed inside your soul."

She let that sit for a second, then tapped her tail gently against his neck. "That’s enough for one night. Sleep. Class and training still happen tomorrow whether you’re ready or not."

He walked inside, the door clicking shut behind him. Moonlight lay in a thin silver strip across the table — the rusted copper knife, the leather bracer, a small row of potion vials. He sat on the edge of the bed and looked down at his hand. The color had come back, but underneath, deep in his core, something cold still moved — patient, coiled, waiting.

A system prompt flickered into view.

[Combat Settlement — Start]

Silver luminous characters rippled gently in the air, rearranging into neat, organized lines.

[Exclusive Reward Granted: Skill Package (Frost Resonance • Beginner Tier)]

Before he could process any of it, a wave of cold rose up from somewhere deeper than anything Gwendolyn had ever lent him — structured, whole, entirely his own. His true frost art had just been born.

[Frost Resonance · Beginner‑Tier]

Passive Effect: Soul‑resonance efficiency with frost‑attribute Spirit‑Beasts increased by 20%.

Active Skill: Frost Breath Release (Acquired · Upgradable)

Cecil’s consciousness swept over these lines and paused at the words Frost‑Armor Convergence. Behind the skill name hung a blurry mass of information, as if he were gazing at something through frosted glass. Its outline was faintly visible, yet the specific details remained out of reach.
