The night before the entrance exam, Yu invited him over.
"For good luck," she said over the phone. "Bring nothing. Wear less."
He showed up at seven. She opened the door in a silk robe and nothing else, her hair down, the apartment lit by candles she'd probably bought an hour ago because the wax was still white and unmelted. She'd made an effort. She'd never admit she'd made an effort, but the candles and the wine already poured on the coffee table said everything her mouth wouldn't.
"Hey," she said.
"Hey."
She pulled him inside by his shirt collar and kissed him in the doorway. His hands found her waist through the silk. Her body was warm underneath, bare skin sliding under the fabric. She tasted like the wine she'd been drinking while she waited.
They made it to the couch. She was straddling him, the robe falling open, his mouth on her neck, when the doorbell rang.
Yu froze.
"Are you expecting someone?" Riku asked. His hands were on her thighs.
"No." She looked at the door. Then at him. Then back at the door. "If that's my neighbor asking about the recycling schedule again I'm going to grow sixty feet tall and step on her building."
She got off his lap, pulled the robe closed, and went to the door. Looked through the peephole. Went very still.
"Who is it?" Riku asked.
Yu opened the door.
Midnight stood in the hallway. Civilian clothes. Dark blouse and jeans, ankle boots. Her hair was down, loose past her shoulders, and she was holding a bottle of wine in one hand like she'd brought a hostess gift to a dinner party she hadn't been invited to.
She and Yu looked at each other. The silence lasted exactly long enough for Riku to understand that both of them knew exactly who the other was and exactly why the other was here.
"Good evening," Midnight said. Her voice was pleasant and totally unruffled. She looked past Yu into the apartment, found Riku on the couch, and nodded once. Like she was confirming a hypothesis.
"You tracked him," Yu said. Flat.
"His pheromone signature is quite distinctive. I can detect Allure-type emissions from approximately three blocks at this saturation level." Clinical and precise. Standing in another woman's doorway uninvited with a bottle of cabernet.
"I didn't say you could come in."
"I assumed we'd moved past pretending this was exclusive."
The words landed like a slap that both women had been expecting. Yu's jaw worked. Her grip on the door tightened, the knuckles whitening against the wood. Behind her, the candles she'd lit for a private evening flickered in the draft from the hallway.
She looked at Midnight, then at Riku, then back.
"I don't like you," she said.
"That's fine," Midnight said. "I don't need you to like me."
Yu stepped aside.
Midnight walked in like she owned the place, which was impressive given that it was someone else's apartment. She set the wine on the counter and looked around the room with the same clinical assessment she'd given Riku at the convention center. Sat down in the armchair across from the couch. The same chair Yu used for watching TV. She settled into it like it had been waiting for her.
"Wine?" Midnight asked, looking at the bottle Yu had already opened.
"That's MY wine."
"I brought my own." She nodded at the bottle on the counter. "Though yours looks acceptable." This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.
Yu stared at her for a long moment. Then she went to the kitchen and came back with three glasses. Poured. Handed one to Midnight with a force that was just short of throwing it. Brought one to Riku. Kept one for herself.
She sat on the couch next to Riku, close, her thigh pressed against his, the robe riding up. Territorial. Her hand found his knee and stayed there. Look at me. I was here first.
The room was thick.
Riku's Allure Aura was spiking. Both women were producing pheromones. Yu's were subtle, a low competitive heat that she probably wasn't conscious of, her body staking a claim. Midnight's Somnambulist aroma was controlled but present, filling the corners of the apartment, mixing with the Allure Aura in the air between all three of them. The combination was heavy. Dense. The candles on the coffee table seemed to burn brighter in it.
"So," Yu said. She took a long drink of wine. "The R-Rated Hero in my living room. How did I get so lucky."
"Kayama," Midnight said. "Nemuri Kayama. Since we're apparently skipping the professional courtesies."
"Yu Takeyama. Since you already know that because you tracked my boyfriend to my apartment."
Riku looked at her. "Boyfriend?"
"Shut up." She took another drink. "Not the point."
"It's a little bit the point," Midnight said. She was sipping her wine with the calm of someone watching a nature documentary. "If he were your boyfriend, this would be a different conversation. But he's not. And you know he's not. Because you know what his quirk requires and you know that one person isn't sufficient."
Yu's mouth opened. Closed. The flush on her cheeks wasn't from the wine.
She knew. Of course she knew. She'd felt the Vitality Drain, understood the mechanics, done the math. A single feeding partner wasn't enough to keep an incubus-type at peak performance long-term. The quirk needed variety the way a diet needed variety. One food source wasn't a balanced meal.
"You could have called," Yu said. Quieter.
"And you would have said no."
"I would have said HELL no."
"Exactly. So I came in person." Midnight crossed her legs. The jeans were tight and she knew it. "This conversation goes better face to face. Pheromone-types need to be in the same room to reach an honest assessment of compatibility."
"Is that what this is? A compatibility assessment?"
"Among other things."
Riku sat between them. Literally between them, Yu on his left on the couch, Midnight in the armchair to his right, and the triangle of pheromones in the air connecting all three points. He could feel both of them through the aura. Yu running hot, competitive, her heart rate elevated. Midnight cool on the surface, her aroma carefully modulated, but underneath it the same frequency shift he'd felt in her bedroom, turned up.
"I should say something," Riku said.
Both women looked at him.
"This only works if everyone's choosing it. Nobody gets pressured or convinced. If either of you wants the other one to leave, she leaves. If both of you want to stay, you both stay. But it has to be your decision. Not the aura's. Not the pheromones. Yours."
Silence.
Yu took a drink. Then another. Her jaw was tight but her body hadn't moved away from his.
"You rehearsed that," she said.
"No. I've just been thinking about it for a while."
"How long is a while?"
"Since I understood what my quirk was."
She looked at him. Searched his face for something. Found it, apparently, because her shoulders dropped half an inch and the competitive edge in her expression softened into something more complicated.
"Your apartment is lovely," Midnight said, looking at the signed poster of Yu on the wall. "Very... self-affirming."
"That's critiquing."
"That's observing."
Riku almost laughed. Caught himself. Both women would have killed him.
The evening settled into an uncomfortable truce. They drank and talked. The conversation was barbed, careful, two women feeling out each other's boundaries while a fifteen-year-old sat between them wondering how his life had arrived at this specific point.
Yu was louder. Bigger personality, more space taken up. Every sentence a performance even when the content was genuine. She told Midnight about the community event, the crowd, how Riku had stood at the back and watched her without reaching for his phone.
"That was the moment," she said. "He just stood there. Everyone else was grabbing at me and he just stood there."
"He did the same thing at my presentation," Midnight said. "Sat in the back row and suppressed his aura. I could feel the absence more than I'd have felt the presence."
They looked at each other. For the first time, something that wasn't competitive or territorial.
The moment passed. Yu poured more wine. Midnight accepted. The conversation continued, less barbed now, the edges rounding.
Midnight asked about Yu's gigantification quirk. Yu asked about Somnambulist. They found common ground in the shared experience of having quirks that society sexualized whether they wanted it or not. Midnight had been called "the dominatrix hero" in tabloids since her debut. Yu had comment sections that never got past her body. Neither of them said this directly. They orbited it, landing on specific stories, specific incidents, and recognized the same scars in different shapes.
Riku listened. The aura hummed. Both women's pheromones had shifted. Less competitive. Present. Warm. The room smelled like wine and the layered chemistry of three people whose bodies were having a conversation their mouths hadn't gotten to yet.
It was past midnight when the talking wound down.
Yu set her empty glass on the table. Midnight set hers beside it. The two glasses stood next to each other, touching at the rim.
Nobody pointed it out.
"So," Yu said. She was looking at Midnight but the question was for the room. "What happens now."
It wasn't a question.
Midnight looked at Riku. Yu looked at Riku.
"Your apartment," Midnight said to Yu. "Your call."
Yu looked at her. Something passed between them that Riku couldn't read but could feel through the aura.
"Bedroom's down the hall," Yu said. She stood up. The robe slipped off one shoulder and she didn't fix it. "Both of you."
She walked toward the bedroom without looking back.
Midnight stood and held out her hand to Riku.
"For research purposes," she said.
"Naturally."
They followed Yu down the hall. The apartment was quiet except for the sound of three heartbeats and the candles guttering on the coffee table behind them.
Tomorrow was the entrance exam.
