The text came three days later.
9:47 PM: "Are you available tomorrow evening? Research purposes."
No preamble. No "hey how are you" or "remember me from the convention center." Just the ask and the justification, clinical as a lab report. Riku read it twice and smiled at his ceiling.
He typed back: "What time?"
9:48 PM: "Eight. I'll send the address. Eat beforehand."
The address was a residential building in a quiet neighborhood near UA's campus. Fourth floor. The hallway smelled like laundry detergent and somebody's curry dinner. He knocked at eight on the dot because she seemed like someone who noticed when people were late.
She opened the door in civilian clothes. First time he'd seen her out of costume. Dark jeans and a loose sweater that fell off one shoulder, her hair pulled back in a low ponytail instead of the dramatic loose fall she wore on stage. No mask. Barefoot on hardwood floors.
She looked younger without the costume. Softer around the edges. Still beautiful. Nothing to do with the R-Rated branding and everything to do with sharp cheekbones and dark intelligent eyes.
"You're punctual," she said.
"You told me to be."
"I told you a time. Being punctual was your interpretation." She stepped aside. "Come in."
Her apartment was the opposite of Mt. Lady's. Where Yu's place was white minimalist catalog, Midnight's was lived-in. Bookshelves lining the walls, stuffed past capacity, books stacked sideways on top of books already shelved vertically. A desk in the corner buried under papers and a laptop and what looked like student assignments. Art on the walls that was actually art, not signed posters of herself. The couch had a blanket thrown over it and a coffee mug on the arm that might have been there since morning.
It looked like a teacher's apartment because it was.
"Sit," she said. She went to the kitchen and came back with a bottle of wine and one glass. She poured for herself and didn't offer him any.
"I'm not going to give a fifteen-year-old alcohol," she said, reading his expression. "There's water and juice in the fridge. Help yourself."
He got a glass of water and sat on the couch. She sat in the armchair across from him, one leg tucked under her, the wine glass held loosely in her right hand. The distance was deliberate.
"So," she said. "Tell me about your quirk."
"You already know the classification."
"I know the textbook version. Incubus-type, emitter-transformation hybrid, subcategory pheromone. I want the personal version. How does it feel? What does it do that the documentation doesn't cover?"
So he told her.
He explained the Allure Aura. The passive range, how it expanded when he was tired or emotional. She asked specific follow-up questions: at what distance did it become noticeable, did it affect men and women equally. Could animals sense it? He told her about the cat in his building and she nodded like that confirmed a hypothesis she'd already formed.
He explained the Charm Pulse. The concentrated burst, the cooldown period. She asked about side effects. He told her about the nosebleeds and headaches from overuse. She made a note on her phone.
He explained the Vitality Drain. The contact requirement, the scaling based on intimacy level. The stat boost and the feeding schedule. This was where her questions changed.
"How long can you go without feeding?"
"Forty-eight to seventy-two hours before degradation starts. A week before it gets serious."
"And you've been feeding recently."
It wasn't a question. She could probably sense it in the quality of his aura, like a mechanic hearing an engine run clean. Find the original chapter at g.com.
"Yeah."
"With who is none of my business." She took a sip of wine. Her eyes stayed on him over the rim. "How does the drain feel for the partner?"
"Depends on the level of contact. Casual touch is a warm feeling, mild fatigue. Extended contact is relaxation, drowsiness. Full intimacy is..." He paused. "Intense. They describe it as the best sleep of their life afterward."
"And during?"
"During what?"
"During the intimate contact. What does the partner experience while the drain is active?"
He looked at her. She looked at him.
"Heightened sensation," he said. "Everything feels more. Touch, pressure, everything. The drain pulls energy but it also amplifies the nervous system's response to stimulus. It makes everything more intense."
"Interesting." She set her wine glass down. Her fingers lingered on the stem. "And the resonance we experienced at the convention center. Has that happened to you before? With another pheromone-type?"
"No. You're the first."
"It was quite strong. Even at twenty rows of distance, with your aura suppressed, the interaction was measurable. My Somnambulist output spiked fourteen percent during your pulse. I checked my biometrics afterward." She paused. "Fourteen percent is significant."
"What would happen at closer range?"
"That's what I'd like to find out."
The room was getting warmer. Riku could feel it on his skin, a gradual shift that had been building since she'd sat down. Her aroma was leaking. Not the drowsiness component, not the sleep-inducing fog she used in combat. Something else. Warmer. Headier. A scent that settled into his lungs and made his pulse quicken.
She noticed it before he said anything. Her nostrils flared slightly and she glanced at her own hand, then at his face.
"That's not intentional," she said. Quieter now.
"I know."
"My aroma responds to... stimuli. Emotional and physical. When I'm discussing topics that engage certain responses, it becomes harder to regulate the output." But her voice had dropped half a register and the sweater had slipped further off her shoulder and she hadn't fixed it.
"You're saying talking about my quirk turns you on."
Her jaw tightened. Not angry. She gave him the look of a teacher whose student is technically correct and making her job harder.
"I'm saying the pheromone interaction between our quirks creates a physiological feedback loop that intensifies with proximity and emotional engagement." She picked up her wine glass. Put it back down without drinking. "But yes. In layman's terms. That."
The room was thick with it now. His Allure Aura was pushing outward, matching her signal, the two frequencies tangling in the air between them. He could feel it on his skin like sunlight through a window. She could feel it too. Her breathing had changed. Slower, deeper, like she was trying to control intake.
"I should tell you something," she said. "Before this goes wherever it's going."
"If this happens, I direct it. I set the pace and the limits. This is not a negotiation. That's the condition." She looked at him with those dark eyes and there was nothing clinical in them anymore. "I'm thirty-one. You're fifteen. The power dynamic here is already complicated enough without adding improvisation."
"I'm fine with that."
"You agreed very quickly."
"Because I trust you to know what you're doing and I don't need to be in charge to enjoy something."
She studied him. The aroma pulsed in the room, thick, warm, his aura pushing back in steady waves. The air between them felt like the space between two magnets held close.
"You're not what I expected," she said.
"What did you expect?"
"A fifteen-year-old boy with an incubus quirk and something to prove. Cocky and reckless. Treating his quirk like a toy." She tilted her head. "You're not that."
"I've had fifteen years to think about what I am."
"Most people with fifteen years don't arrive at where you are."
She stood up from the armchair. Set her wine glass on the side table with a click that sounded loud in the quiet room. She walked to where he was sitting on the couch and stood over him, looking down. Her aroma was concentrated at close range, thick enough that he could taste it on the back of his tongue. Sweet and heavy, like flowers left too long in a warm room.
She held out her hand.
"Come with me."
He took her hand. The contact sparked. His Allure Aura and her Somnambulist aroma collided at the point where their skin touched and the result was a pulse that ran up both their arms. She inhaled sharply. He felt it in his chest, warm, spreading outward, every nerve in his body waking up at once.
Her fingers tightened around his.
"Fourteen percent at twenty rows," she said. Her voice was steady but her hand wasn't. A fine tremor running through her fingers. "I'm very curious what the number is at zero distance."
She led him down the hallway. Past the bathroom, past a closed door that was probably a home office, to the bedroom at the end. She pushed the door open with her free hand and pulled him inside.
The bedroom was simple. A large bed with dark sheets. Blackout curtains drawn against the streetlights, a nightstand stacked with books beside a reading lamp. A room designed for two things: sleeping and whatever else happened in the dark.
She turned to face him. Still holding his hand. The aroma filled the small room in seconds, dense and warm, the air itself feeling heavier. His aura answered it in kind.
"I'm going to undress you," she said. "And then I'm going to show you what this interaction looks like when neither of us is holding back. For research purposes."
"For research."
"Purely academic."
Her hands found the hem of his shirt.
Neither of them was smiling. This wasn't Mt. Lady's playful banter or competitive flirting. This was two people standing in a bedroom with their quirks screaming at each other through the walls of their self-control, and one of them had just given permission to stop holding back.
She pulled his shirt up. Her hands grazed his stomach and his aura pulsed and she gasped, a small sound she caught between her teeth.
"Now we begin," she said.
