Morning came quietly.

The city was already awake, but something about it felt different.

I walked to school alone like always.Full novel: Angel Under my Roof — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Same path.

Same pace.

Same silence.

But people kept looking at me longer than usual.

Not directly.

Not openly.

Just enough to notice.

When I reached the school gate, I stopped for a moment.

The building looked normal.

But it didn’t feel normal.

I stepped inside.

Whispers followed me through the hallway.

“Is that him…?”

“Yeah… I think so…”

“Something happened yesterday, right?”

I didn’t respond.

I just kept walking.

Inside the classroom, everything looked the same.

But it wasn’t.

Hanoka was already there.

Sitting quietly at her desk.

Looking out the window.

No tears.

No panic.

Just silence.

I paused for a moment, then walked to my seat.

We didn’t speak.

I sat down and opened my bag.

Normal routine.

But the silence between us felt heavier than before.

Not awkward.

Not hostile.

Just aware.

I could feel her presence beside me.

I didn’t look at her.

But I knew she turned her head slightly.

She was looking at me.

No smile.

No fear.

Just calm attention.

I looked away first.

The classroom slowly filled up.

Students started talking again, but quieter than usual.

Their eyes kept shifting toward us.

Trying to understand something they didn’t know.

“I heard something serious happened…”

“Wait really?”

“Yeah I heard it on the news a guy and a girl were seen in a barn and their faces resembled Hanoka and Akira”

“That’s messed up”

“They look different today…”

“Did something change between them?”

No one knew the truth.

But everyone could feel it.

Hanoka eventually turned forward again.

But she didn’t ignore me.

She stayed aware.

Present.

Not leaving.

Not pushing.

I kept looking forward.

My grip on the pen tightened slightly.

Then relaxed.

Nothing was said.

But something had changed.

Something neither of us had named yet.

The bell hadn’t even rung yet.

But everything already felt different from yesterday.

And neither of us said why.

The teacher finally entered the class.

The room slowly settled.

Attendance started.

Normal routine continued like nothing had changed.

But it had.

Even the teacher paused for a second when looking at me and Hanoka.

Then continued like usual.

Time passed slowly.

Lessons started.

Chalk on board.

Pages turning.

Pen scratches.

But I wasn’t really listening.

Neither was she.

At some point, I noticed Hanoka adjusting her posture slightly.

Then opening her notebook.

Writing something.

But I didn’t look.

Break time finally came.

Chairs moved again.

Noise returned.

This time louder.

Students started gathering in groups.

But their eyes kept drifting toward us.

A group of boys passed by.

One of them whispered.

“That’s him… right?”

“The one from yesterday?”

“I heard he’s involved in something dangerous…”

I ignored it.

Hanoka stood up first.

I noticed it without looking directly.

She adjusted her bag.

Then stepped slightly closer to her desk again.

Not leaving.

Just repositioning.

A girl from another desk walked past her.

Then suddenly spoke.

“Hey Hanoka… are you okay?

You’ve been quiet today.”

Hanoka looked at her.

Paused.

Then smiled slightly.

“I’m fine.”

That was all she said.

The girl looked surprised.

Then walked away.

I stood up after a while.

Same routine.

Same movement.

But something felt heavier than before.

As I moved toward the window side of the classroom, I could feel eyes following me again.

Not fear exactly.

Not admiration either.

Something in between.

Hanoka also stood up shortly after.

She didn’t follow me.

But she also didn’t go anywhere else.

Just stayed nearby.

For a moment, there was distance between us again.

But not separation.

Just space.

Outside the window, the wind moved the trees slightly.

Sunlight entered the classroom in soft lines.

Everything looked normal.

But it wasn’t.

I glanced outside.

Then back inside.

And for a split second—

I noticed Hanoka looking in the same direction.

Not at me.

Just… present in the same moment.

We didn’t speak.

But the silence between us didn’t feel empty anymore.

It felt… shared.

The bell hadn’t rung yet.

But the day already felt longer than usual.

The moment I left the classroom, the noise behind me slowly returned to Hanoka.

I didn’t stop walking.

But I could hear it.

Girl #1: “Hanoka… are you in love with Akira?”

Girl #2: “What happened yesterday?

Tell us!”

Girl #3: “You were together, right?”

Questions piled up around her.

Voices pressing in.

Hanoka stayed quiet for a second.

Then she finally spoke.

Hanoka: “About what happened yesterday… it was something terrible.”

A pause.

Her gaze dropped slightly.

Hanoka: “I can’t forget what Akira did to that guy—”

She stopped mid-sentence.

Because the classroom door suddenly slid open again.

I was there.

Without saying anything, I walked straight in.

Grabbed Hanoka’s hand.

And pulled her out.

The entire room went silent for a fraction of a second.

Then confusion.

Then whispers again.

We moved fast.

Down the hallway.

Past the noise.

Past the stares.

All the way out to the school gate.

Only when we reached a quieter area did I stop.

I let go of her hand.

Akira (low voice): “Don’t you dare talk about what happened yesterday.”

A pause.

Akira: “I can’t let anyone find out.”

Hanoka stared at me.

For a moment… she didn’t respond.

Then her expression changed.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Frustration.

Hanoka (sharper tone): “WHY?!”

A step forward.

Hanoka: “Why don’t I get to stand up for you?”

Her voice rose slightly.

Hanoka: “Tell them how cool you were yesterday!

You hear all the bad things they say about you and ignore them—but I can’t.

I can’t ever!”

A breath.

Hanoka: “Why are you like this?”

I looked at her.

Quiet.

Then answered.

Akira: “The thing is… I don’t want to stand out.”

A pause.

My voice stayed steady.

Akira: “I hate attention.”

Silence.

The wind passed between us.

Hanoka’s voice lowered.

The anger faded slightly.

But not completely.

Hanoka (softly): “Akira…”

A pause.

She looked at me properly now.

Hanoka: “You can ignore the insults…”

Her hands tightened slightly.

Hanoka: “But I can’t.”

A small breath.

Hanoka: “As your friend… I can’t ever.”

The word friend hung in the air.

Heavy.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

And for the first time in that moment…

I didn’t answer immediately.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

But behind us…

the classroom atmosphere shifted again.

Back inside the room, voices started rising.

Not directly at Hanoka anymore.

At me.

Student #1: “He really thinks he’s something special, huh?”

Student #2: “Acting all cool just because he wears a mask…”

Student #3: “He’s just a gloomy airhead.”

The words spread quickly, like they had been waiting to come out.

Student #4 (angrily): “Who does he think he is?”

A pause.

Then louder:

Student #4: “A ‘hot cool boy’ or something?”

Laughter followed.

Mixed with irritation.

Mixed with jealousy they didn’t fully understand themselves.

Student #5 (low voice): “Hanoka is supposed to be the school’s angel…”

Student #5: “And he just… took all her attention.”

Another voice cut in sharply.

Student #6: “I won’t let him have her.”

Silence followed that sentence.

Not everyone agreed.

But no one stopped it either.

The room was divided now.

Opinions forming faster than facts.

Rumors replacing reality.

Outside the classroom…

the wind passed quietly between me and Hanoka.

And for the first time…

she didn’t speak immediately.

She just looked at me.

Waiting.

All this time, Hanoka and I were outside the school.

The wind was quieter here.

But the tension wasn’t.

I stood there for a moment.

Then slowly looked up.

The school building rose in front of us.

Rows of windows.

Some classrooms still visible from here.

And I saw it.

Students inside were still talking.

Gesturing.

Looking toward the windows.

Then back down at something—or someone—they were discussing.

Even from this distance…

I could feel it.

The attention hadn’t left.

It had just shifted upward.

Hanoka noticed my gaze.

But didn’t interrupt.

She just stood beside me quietly.

Waiting.

For a few seconds, I didn’t move.

Just looked at the building.

At the place where all of this started.

Then I looked away.

Akira (low voice): “It’s getting louder…”

Not in sound.

But in everything else.

A pause.

The wind passed between us.

Hanoka didn’t answer immediately.

She also looked up at the school for a moment.

Then back at me.

Her expression was calmer now.

But serious.

And for the first time today…

she didn’t try to argue.

She just stayed there beside me.

Not pushing.

Not leaving.

Just… present.

And I realized something.

Even from here…

I wasn’t really out of it anymore.

Hanoka suddenly raised her voice.

Hanoka: “SEE?!

They’re speaking bad things about you!

Why don’t you think you should stop it?!”

Her words cut through the air.

For a moment… everything went still.

Something inside me shifted.

Not anger.

Not panic.

Something quieter.

Heavier.

I reached out and grabbed her hand.

She froze slightly.

Without saying anything, I guided her away from the school area.

Past the noise.

Past the windows.

Past the voices that still lingered behind us.

We reached a quieter side road.

Away from the crowd.

Away from eyes.

My car was there.

The black S13.

Still.

Silent.

Hanoka’s eyes widened slightly.

She hadn’t seen it this close before.

I opened the door.

Akira: “Get in.”

She hesitated for only a moment… then sat inside.

I closed the door.

Walked around.

Got in.

Started the engine.

The sound broke the silence.

Low.

Heavy.

Alive.

The car moved forward.

Then faster.

The city blurred slightly as we entered the roads.

The tires screeched lightly on turns.

Controlled.

Precise.

Every movement calculated.

Hanoka gripped the seat slightly.

Not afraid.

Just surprised.

We moved onto the highway.

Wind rushed past the windows.

City lights stretching behind us.

For a while… neither of us spoke.

Then Hanoka finally asked.

Hanoka: “Where are we going?”

I didn’t look at her.

Just kept my eyes on the road.

Akira: “I’m going to tell you…”

A pause.

The engine hummed steadily.

Akira: “…why I hate attention.”

Hanoka: “you could have told me on the street why the car”

Akira: ” Shut it… I wanted to drive it”

Hanoka: “Okay..

Go on”

The car kept moving forward.

The highway stretched endlessly ahead.

Streetlights blurred into long streaks of gold and white.

The engine’s low roar filled the silence between us.

Hanoka didn’t speak at first.

She just looked forward, then occasionally at me.

Waiting.

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel slightly.

My voice came out calmer than expected.

Akira: “You keep seeing what they say… what they think…”

A pause.

Akira: “But you don’t see what happens after.”

Hanoka stayed quiet.

I continued driving.

Eyes fixed ahead.

Akira: “People like that… they don’t stop at words.”

A slight pause.

Akira: “If they think you’re close to someone… they don’t just talk.”

The road curved slightly.

I turned smoothly.

No hesitation in movement.

Akira: “They pressure.

They target.

They turn everything into noise.”

Hanoka finally spoke, softly.

Hanoka: “So that’s why you push everyone away?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

A few seconds passed.

Wind pressed against the windows.

Akira: “It’s easier that way.”

Silence again.

The car moved past an exit, continuing straight into the open highway.

The city lights began thinning out.

More darkness ahead.

Less noise.

Hanoka looked down at her hands for a moment.

Then spoke again.

Hanoka: “But that’s not protection.”

A pause.

Hanoka: “That’s just isolation.”

I exhaled slightly.

Not annoyed.

Just… tired.

Akira: “Call it whatever you want.”

The road straightened.

The engine maintained steady speed.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Only the sound of movement.

Then Hanoka leaned slightly forward.

Hanoka: “Earlier… in school…”

A pause.

Hanoka: “You didn’t have to pull me out like that.”

I glanced at her briefly.

Then back to the road.

Akira: “You were going to say something you shouldn’t have.”

She looked at me.

Hanoka: “So what?”

A small pause.

Hanoka: “I was just telling the truth.”

I didn’t respond right away.

The car passed under an overpass.

Light briefly dimmed.

Then returned.

Akira: “Truth isn’t always safe.”

Hanoka leaned back slightly.

Her expression softened, but her eyes stayed firm.

Hanoka: “And silence isn’t always right.”

That line stayed in the air.

Longer than the others.

I didn’t answer.

The road began to open into a wider stretch.

Less traffic now.

More space.

After a few minutes, I finally spoke again.

Akira: “You don’t understand yet.”

A pause.

Akira: “Why people like me stay away.”

Hanoka turned slightly toward me.

Hanoka: “Then explain it.”

Silence.

The engine hummed steadily.

Wind rushed past.

I didn’t respond immediately.

My grip on the wheel tightened slightly.

Then relaxed.

Akira: “When people look at you too much…”

A pause.

Akira: “They don’t just see you.”

Another turn on the highway.

Smooth.

Controlled.

Akira: “They build stories around you.”

I continued.

Akira: “And once that happens… you stop being a person.”

Hanoka stayed quiet.

Listening.

Akira: “You become a target.

A topic.

A reason for noise.”

A pause.

Akira: “That’s what I hate.”

The car slowed slightly as we approached a quieter road section.

Hanoka looked forward again.

Then softly spoke.

Hanoka: “So you think disappearing is better?”

I didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

Akira: “It is.”

Silence again.

The road ahead grew darker.

Less city.

More empty space.

Hanoka exhaled slowly.

Then leaned slightly back.

Hanoka: “You’re wrong.”

I glanced at her briefly.

She continued.

Hanoka: “You’re not disappearing.”

A pause.

Hanoka: “You’re just standing alone inside a crowd.”

The words hit differently.

But I didn’t show it.

The car continued forward.

A long silence passed.

Then I spoke again.

Quieter this time.

Akira: “You should’ve stayed away from me.”

Hanoka turned to me fully now.

Hanoka: “I didn’t choose that.”

A pause.

Hanoka: “And I’m still here.”

The road stretched ahead into darkness.

No more city lights nearby.

Only distance.

Only wind.

I didn’t respond after that.

The car kept moving.

And for the first time that day…

the silence between us didn’t feel empty.

It felt heavy.

Meaningful.

Unfinished.

I dont why Akira wanted to drive it
