The Salvatore house had been empty for long enough that most residents of Mystic Falls had stopped thinking about it.

Its windows remained dark, the surrounding grounds were poorly maintained, and the building stood apart from the more recently renovated houses as though it belonged to a different century.

Then lights appeared in the windows.Full novel: APEX IN THE SHADOWS — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

A car was seen near the entrance.

And people began talking.

Noah heard the first reliable confirmation at school.

He was standing near a classroom doorway when two students discussed the returning resident.

One had heard that the house had been inherited; the other insisted that someone had seen a young man carrying boxes through the front entrance.

Neither knew the details.

Noah did.

At least, he knew the broad outline.

Stefan Salvatore had returned to Mystic Falls.

That did not mean Noah needed to meet him.

He had considered approaching the Salvatore brothers before the school year began, but the more he thought about it, the less useful the idea became.

Stefan was cautious and guarded.

Damon was unpredictable, manipulative, and considerably more dangerous when he felt entertained.

Introducing himself without a clear objective would create questions he did not want to answer.

Why was a teenager interested in two men who supposedly had little reason to be connected to him?

How did he know their names?

Why did he appear to be watching them?

Even if Stefan recognised no immediate threat, Damon might decide that Noah’s curiosity was worth investigating.

Noah had no interest in becoming a vampire’s new hobby.

He would observe from a distance.

That evening, he walked through town on the way home from the library.

The Salvatore property lay beyond the centre, surrounded by trees and a long drive.

He simply noted the location, the condition of the grounds, and the presence of a vehicle near the house.

Then he continued walking.

He did not need to see Stefan’s face to confirm that someone had returned.

The town was already reacting.

At home, Mara noticed him writing in his notebook.

“What are you documenting now?”

“Local history.”

“That’s what you said last time.”

“Local history continues to happen.”

“You’re seventeen.

You should be doing something irresponsible.”

“I am.

I’m reading about the founding families of a town full of people who have apparently never heard of online archives.”

Mara stared at him.

Then she laughed.

“You’re going to be the strangest adult in this family.”

“That would require beating the current record.”

She threw a cushion at him.

Noah caught it without looking.

The movement was so smooth that Mara paused.

“How did you do that?”

He glanced at the cushion.

“Hand-eye coordination.”

“You didn’t even look.”

“Excellent hand-eye coordination.”

Noah returned to his notebook.

He added an entry beneath the Salvatore names.

Stefan likely back in town.

Avoid unnecessary contact.

Observe changes in local activity.

He considered adding a similar note about Damon, but there was no reliable evidence that the older brother had arrived yet.

Instead, he turned to the next page and wrote a list of practical objectives.

Improve psychic energy reserves.

Continue physical control training.

Expand the Quiet Mind Method carefully.

Build a reliable understanding of local supernatural activity.

Keep the family safe.

He looked at the final line for a moment.

The supernatural world was beginning to move around Mystic Falls, but he was not obligated to move with it.

He could choose his own pace, provided he understood the risks of waiting too long.

That was the difficult part.

If he intervened too early, he might attract attention and alter events before he was prepared.

If he waited too long, someone might suffer because he had chosen to remain invisible.

He could not eliminate that dilemma.

He could only gather enough information to make better decisions.

Noah closed the notebook.

Across town, Stefan Salvatore was beginning the next chapter of his life in Mystic Falls.

Noah had no intention of walking through the front door to greet him.

For now, the town’s newest supernatural resident could remain unaware of the quiet teenager who lived several streets away.

That was precisely how Noah wanted it.
