Xiao Yi smiled faintly and took several bottles of water and a few ham sausages from his Spatial Pouch.

“There weren’t many zombies in the corridor. I got lucky, escaped, and found plenty of food and water. Open the door. I’m not injured.”

Only after Du Zhiming examined him several more times did he slowly open the door and allow Xiao Yi inside.Full novel: Apocalypse: I Built a City of Sin — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“This is wonderful! Xiao Yi, I’m so glad you’re alive!”

Tang Ningning was the first to rush forward and welcome him, tears glistening in her large eyes.

Xiao Yi could hear weakness and pain in her voice.

Looking her over, he saw that she had lost considerable weight. Her lips were cracked from going so long without water.

“Thank you,” Xiao Yi said simply. He handed Tang Ningning a bottle of water and two sausages.

Everyone else stared hungrily at the food and water in her hands, looking ready to rush forward and snatch them away.

Tang Ningning froze for a moment, then bowed gratefully. She struggled to open the bottle and gulped down the water.

“I didn’t expect you to be so capable. You actually came back alive.” Chen Kun sneered imperiously. “Hand over your food and water.”

He held a wooden pole that had probably been removed from a mop.

The way he gripped it might have looked impressive, but to Xiao Yi, the weapon was a joke.

Several students who constantly sucked up to Chen Kun stood nearby, glaring threateningly at Xiao Yi while holding an assortment of bizarre weapons.

There was a javelin, a broom, a stool, a jump rope, and even a female student armed with a starter pistol.

Xiao Yi sneered inwardly. Against zombies incapable of feeling pain, such objects were laughable.

“You’ve done very well, Xiao Yi! You’ve made an important contribution. Now hurry and give the food to me. To conserve our supplies, we haven’t eaten anything in two days!” Du Zhiming declared sternly, patting Xiao Yi on the shoulder.

They had not eaten for two days?

Hmph!

Xiao Yi might have believed that of Tang Ningning and a few others. But Du Zhiming looked far too well-fed to have gone hungry.

Ignoring both Du Zhiming and Chen Kun, Xiao Yi searched the room for the burly student who had defended him when everyone else drove him out.

“Where is Zhang Hua?” he asked coldly.

The burly student’s name was Zhang Hua, but Xiao Yi could not find him among the crowd.

“Zhang Hua? Hmph! That useless bastard ate too much and couldn’t do anything useful. The day after you left, everyone voted to send him out for supplies. I doubt he was as lucky as you.” Chen Kun sneered impatiently. “Now take out everything you found. Mr. Du and I are in charge of distributing the storeroom’s food and water!”

Xiao Yi turned and fixed Chen Kun with an icy stare.

“Why?”

Chen Kun froze, staring at him in disbelief. “Are you talking to me? Did you just ask why?”

Then he burst out laughing.

“Because my uncle is a general in the Jiangcheng Military District! Zombies are everywhere, and only the army can save us! Once my uncle’s men are free, they’ll come to the university for me. When that happens, whether the rest of you live or die will depend on a single word from me! That’s why! If you want to survive, follow my orders like a good little dog. Otherwise, get the fuck out!”

“That’s right!” one of Chen Kun’s lackeys agreed. “This is the apocalypse. Only the army can establish a secure safe zone. Once the army and city government build one, Young Master Chen’s uncle will definitely come save him. We’ll all be safe as long as we hold out until then!”

“Is that so?” Xiao Yi opened a can of Red Bull, took a sip, and sneered. “The apocalypse began more than two months ago. Why hasn’t Chen Kun’s uncle come yet? Are you so certain he’s even alive?”

“Even if he is alive, can you truly be sure he’ll come for Chen Kun? Do you honestly believe you’ll survive until then?”

Xiao Yi’s words plunged everyone into thought.

The remaining food would last them only two or three more days. Worse still, the storeroom had almost no water left.

Du Zhiming and Chen Kun controlled what little remained, and judging by their behavior, neither man intended to share it with everyone else.

More than two months had passed without any sign of the army. They had not even heard the sound of distant fighting.

The survivors could not help wondering whether anything Chen Kun had told them was true.

Chen Kun noticed the doubtful looks around him and flew into a rage.

“Stop spewing bullshit, you motherfucker! Take the food and water out of your bag!”

He brandished his wooden pole and threatened Xiao Yi. “Everyone, trust me! Once we take Xiao Yi’s supplies, we’ll definitely survive until my uncle sends someone to rescue us!”
