Zarek didn’t pull the door open.

He stood to one side of it, sword low, and looked at the floor first. Black fluid crept out from under the steel and spread into the water on the tunnel floor.

The locking bolts were retracted, and the scrape he’d heard had come from inside the room, not from the door. Behind him, Elsa had stopped breathing loudly. That was something.Full novel: Apocalypse: Investing in My Corrupted Harem — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He eased the door open with the sword tip until he could see through the gap.

The smell reached him first: disinfectant, stale air, and under it the thick copper stink of dead flesh.

He pushed it wide and waited two seconds. Nothing lunged.

Inside was a sterile, windowless room that had been torn apart. Shattered observation glass lay across the tile like frost, and overturned carts and smashed terminals littered the floor.

Three steel containment cells lined the far wall. Two were shut.

The middle one had its thick glass burst from the inside, and its iron bars were bent outward like soft wire. In the third, a dead creature lay strapped to an operating table, a puddle of dried black blood under it.

"This isn’t on any plan," Vance rasped from the doorway, leaning on the frame. "I serviced this building’s breaker panels for four years. This section’s marked as a concrete pier."

"It’s a lab." Elsa was staring at the bars. "They weren’t hiding down here. They were keeping those things in."

"Something got out," Zarek said. He crunched across the glass and ran a thumb along the gouges in the metal. "Look at the bars. It didn’t slip out. It pushed."

One terminal on the back wall was still alive, flickering. A single line of red text sat on the screen: CONTAINMENT FAILURE — SPECIMEN 3 UNACCOUNTED FOR.

Vance squinted at it. "Doesn’t say who built this."

"Doesn’t need to." Somewhere overhead the ceiling thudded, and dust sifted down onto the screen. The fire was still moving. "Stay by the door."

A wet, dragging sound came from behind an overturned desk.

He lowered his stance and pointed the sword at it. Something hauled itself into the light: a small, pale creature with swollen flesh around its neck, ribs showing through a torn flank, and one front leg dragging uselessly behind it. Yellow spit hung from its jaw. It was starving and hurt, and it was still a predator.

Zarek didn’t give it time to steady itself. He moved behind an overturned examination table, forcing it to circle the metal frame to reach him.

It took the bait and lunged around the leg, its good claw snapping at his boots. He sidestepped left and cut down hard across its back.

Black blood sprayed the white tile. The creature shrieked and twisted fast, jaw snapping up toward his open thigh.

A flat iron bar slammed down from the side.

Elsa had stepped into the room. She drove the tip of the pry bar into the creature’s bad foreleg and pinned it to the floor. Her arms shook and her teeth were clenched, but the grip held. "Now!" she choked.

Zarek stepped into the gap and drove the sword down through the top of its skull.

The creature shuddered once, jaw closing on nothing, and went limp.

He yanked the blade free, wiped it on the pale hide, and looked at her. She was backed against the wall, chest heaving, the bloody bar held to her chest.

"You saw the opening. Next time, don’t wait so long to step in."

"I thought it was going to bite your leg."

"It tried."

He didn’t waste time on the paper files. He kicked open a locked supply cabinet and found sealed military medical packs, disinfectant, sterile bandages, and three boxes of antibiotics.

He swept a hand over them, and with a soft chime they were gone. He took Elsa’s left arm without asking, pushed the sleeve of her jacket back, and looked at the three claw marks.

Swollen and red, but the gauze had kept the dust out. He pulled a bottle of antiseptic and a fresh roll of bandage out of nothing and pressed them into her hands.

"Clean it. If your arm rots off, you’re dead weight."

She looked at the high-grade supplies, then at his face.It wasn’t kindness. He was looking after his own property. But as she poured the antiseptic over the cuts and bit down against the sting, she knew she was safer with him than she would be alone.

"There’s a conduit," Vance said, pointing to a low metal hatch behind the cells. "Air scrubber line, I think. It could run toward the drainage trunk."

Zarek crouched beside it. A steady cool draft leaked through the seams, smelling of wet earth. "What can you actually tell me?"

"Direction. It runs toward the boulevard. Big enough to crawl through." Vance hesitated. "Where it comes out, I don’t know. The plans never showed this place."

"Good. You said you didn’t know." Zarek stood. "You lead."

The conduit was a cramped, cold tube that took ten minutes to crawl. At the end, a heavy steel service shutter blocked the way, jammed shut by a heap of concrete and twisted rebar.

"Manual release," Vance wheezed, and pointed to a recessed lever on the left. "Pull it down, then someone lifts."

"Show me first."

Vance showed him. The lever moved, and the shutter shifted a hair.

"Elsa."

She wedged her shoulder under a smaller slab, keeping her bandaged arm tucked in, and shoved it aside.

Zarek jammed the sword under the lip of the shutter and heaved. The steel groaned but held. The shutter ground up a foot, then two, and air rolled over their faces: cool, damp, moving.

Beyond it, a narrow maintenance passage ran off into the dark, with the unmistakable pull of a draft behind it. Toward the drainage network.

Vance stared into it. "Told you."

"You told me you didn’t know." Zarek ducked in first.

The vault Vance had dangled in front of him could wait. Zarek wasn’t gonna die underground for a bunch of guns or answers about what had happened beneath the hotel. Getting out alive came first.
