Chapter 20 — Beneath the Sanctuary

Apocalypse System: The Last Administrator

"...Administrator..."

The whisper was so faint Liam almost thought he had imagined it.

He slowly stood.

Emma looked up from her meal.

"Liam?"

He didn't answer.

The voice came again.

...below...

Not through his ears.

Directly into his mind.

The gray Administrator window flickered.

Rule Detection

Source Located

Depth: 3 Levels Below Ground

Three underground levels.

The parking garage.

Liam's pulse quickened.

Something beneath the settlement knew he was here.

"You look like you've seen a ghost," Emma said.

Liam forced a smile.

"I... need some air."

She frowned.

"Don't wander too far."

"I won't."

It wasn't exactly a lie.

He had no intention of leaving the building.

The lobby was quieter now.

Most survivors had found places to sleep.

The guards remained at their posts while a few Healers continued treating the injured.

Liam slipped toward the emergency stairwell.

Each step downward made the air noticeably colder.

Level B1.

Storage rooms.

Generators.

Nothing unusual.

The whisper returned.

...deeper...

He continued to B2.

The lights flickered overhead.

Half the parking spaces were empty.

The others were filled with abandoned cars coated in dust.

One of the vehicles had dried blood smeared across its windshield.

No bodies.

Just blood.

Liam scanned the area.

Nothing moved.

Yet the feeling of being watched grew stronger.

The Administrator window appeared again.

Observation

Residual Energy Detected

Age: Less than 24 hours

Residual energy?

Someone had been here recently.

Very recently.

"Liam?"

He spun around.

Noah stood at the top of the ramp, holding a flashlight.

"I knew you'd come down here."

Liam sighed.

"I wasn't exactly subtle."

"No."

Noah walked beside him.

"You've been acting strange all evening."

Liam hesitated.

"I think there's something under this building."

Noah looked around.

"You mean monsters?"

"I don't know."

"Then let's find out."

The two continued downward.

B3.

The lowest parking level.

Unlike the upper floors...

This one had no cars.

The entire garage was empty.

Too empty.

Their footsteps echoed unnaturally.

Then Liam noticed something.

A thick steel security door had been welded shut.

Fresh welds.

Someone had sealed it recently.

Noah ran his hand across the metal.

"This wasn't part of the original building."

Liam nodded.

"It looks... reinforced."

A faded sign above the door caught his attention.

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

Below it was another sign, almost hidden beneath soot.

CITY EMERGENCY SHELTER

"So there was a bunker," Noah murmured.

Liam's Rule Detection activated.

Hundreds of gray lines flowed into the steel door.

And one...

One crimson line emerged from behind it.

Like a vein carrying blood.

The whisper became clearer.

...help...

Liam stepped closer.

"Who's there?"

Silence.

Then...

Three knocks echoed from the other side.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Noah immediately stepped back.

"You heard that, right?"

Liam nodded.

Someone—or something—was behind the door.

Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the ramp behind them.

Heavy.

Deliberate.

Victor.

The settlement's scout leader.

His friendly smile was gone.

"What are you two doing down here?"

Noah answered honestly.

"We found this door."

Victor's expression hardened.

"You're not supposed to be here."

Liam watched him carefully.

"Why?"

"It's dangerous."

"Dangerous because of what's inside..."

Liam asked quietly.

"...or because someone might find it?"

For the first time, Victor's eyes narrowed.

"You ask too many questions."

Another voice interrupted.

"That's enough, Victor."

Adrian walked down the ramp.

His black armor gleamed under the flickering lights.

He looked between Liam, Noah, and the sealed door.

Then he sighed.

"I was hoping you wouldn't discover this so soon."

Noah frowned.

"You knew?"

Adrian nodded.

"Of course."

"This is my settlement."

"I know every room in it."

Liam took a step forward.

"What's behind the door?"

For several seconds, Adrian said nothing.

Finally, he answered.

"Hope."

Noah blinked.

"...Hope?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"And a very dangerous secret."

He looked directly at Liam.

"I think..."

"...it's time we talked."

At that exact moment, the whisper returned one final time.

Only this time...

It didn't sound weak.

It sounded relieved.

...You finally came.

Liam felt the Administrator Authority within him stir.

Whatever waited behind that steel door...

Had been waiting specifically for him.
