Stealth in Ascension worked exactly the way it looked on paper an Assassin could vanish from every other player’s view completely, appearing and disappearing like they’d never been there at all.

What stealth didn’t erase was physics. Grass still bent under a footstep. A branch still snapped if you put weight on it wrong. Small things.

The kind of details that slipped past ninety-nine percent of the server without a second thought.Full novel: Ascension Online: My Beasts Evolve infinitely — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Kael wasn’t the ninety-nine percent.

He’d spent a lifetime learning to read a room for exactly this kind of wrongness the half-second of silence that shouldn’t be there, the rustle that didn’t match the wind.

That instinct didn’t come from a game. It came from surviving one life already, the hard way.

He clocked the tail the moment it started, and gave absolutely nothing away. Kept walking. Kept his pace steady, his expression blank.

Whoever was back there never made a move. Just followed, patient, invisible, closing and opening distance in irregular pulses.

A few minutes later, the tree line ahead exploded with movement.

A dozen players broke cover and fanned out, boxing him in from every angle. A handful of unrelated grinders nearby scattered to the edges of the clearing, giving the standoff a wide berth and a front-row seat.

At the front of the group stood a Level 7 Warrior in a mismatched set of Iron and starter gear, gamertag glowing overhead: ReaperDrake.

He looked furious. He’d bought boss-sighting intel off a couple of random players an hour earlier, burned real effort chasing it down, and come up completely empty.

Then word had filtered back through his own people someone in the starting village was running a stall stacked with high-end gear, refusing anything but in-game gold.

No deal. No gear. Nothing to show for any of it.ReaperDrake wasn’t the type to let that go quietly. He’d peeled off an Assassin to track the seller down and brought half his crew personally to settle the score.

Somebody’s going to pay for wasting my afternoon. Now that the trap was sprung, he sneered down at Kael, arms crossed, voice dripping with theater.

"Real ballsy, turning down cash money for some copper-tier trades. Since you want to play difficult, here’s your options."

"Hand over every piece of gear on you and kneel. Or" he grinned wider "I make sure you don’t leave this starting zone in one piece for the rest of the week."

Kael actually laughed. Short, genuine, and not remotely afraid.

"The Voss Cartel. That’s supposed to scare me?"

"You’ve got a death wish, huh."

ReaperDrake’s face twisted. He threw his arm out."Get him!"

His crew surged forward as one. Kael didn’t so much as flinch just raised a hand and summoned the Husk.

Light split the air. A three-meter wall of dark purple muscle and bone spikes hit the ground in front of him, and the roar that followed rattled leaves off nearby branches.

The clearing went dead silent for a beat, then erupted.

"What..what IS that thing?!"

"Wait, isn’t that the boss from the forum post?!"

"No way. No way that’s someone’s pet."

"I’m a Beastlord too and my starter looked nothing like that has to be the hidden class thing everyone’s talking about."

"Level 10, Iron-tier, and it looks like THAT? These guys picked the wrong stall to rob."

The Husk didn’t wait for commentary. Its jaw unhinged and it lunged, closing the distance in one stride, jaws closing around an incoming Warrior mid-swing. One bite.

The player’s health bar hit zero before he’d even registered contact, body dissolving into a burst of white light.

Its tail followed a half-second later, a solid slab of muscle that caught three more attackers across the chest and sent them skidding backward, health bars gutted by more than half in a single hit.

One of them, sprawled on the ground, caught sight of a name tag through the combat log and went pale.

"Wait Unrivaled?! That’s him! That’s actually him!"The name rippled through the crowd like a shockwave.

"The server-first guy?! Two boss kills in one night, and he’s right here?!"

"That thing makes SO much more sense now."

Every member of the Cartel froze mid-charge. Between the Husk’s sheer physical presence and the weight that name carried after tonight’s server announcements, nobody wanted to be the one to take the next step forward.

ReaperDrake stood there for a second, visibly recalibrating. Then the anger came roaring back, worse than before.

The mystery boss I burned an hour chasing was this bastard’s pet the whole time.

He felt like an idiot. Worse everyone watching had just seen him look like one.

His face went dark.

"Cowards! What are you all standing around for?!" He rounded on his crew, spitting the words. "So what if he’s Unrivaled? I don’t care who he is we’re taking him down right here, right now!"

He turned to address the whole clearing, voice climbing.

"Anyone who lands the killing blow on Unrivaled gets ten thousand bucks, cash, no questions asked! Somebody record this I want it posted the second it’s over!"

"Number one player, my ass. He bleeds like everyone else."
