The day after the fight passed in a haze of sleep, low conversation, and the slow return of ordinary sounds to the woods.

Derek slept in heavy stretches, the kind of sleep that came only when the body had nothing left.

Allison dozed in the chair beside the couch until Mara quietly ordered her into the bedroom.Full novel: Before the Full Moon Rises — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“He’s not going to die from a few claw marks,” Mara said.

“But he will be insufferable if he wakes and finds you exhausted.

Sleep.”

Allison slept.

When she woke the light outside had shifted to afternoon, and the cabin smelled of coffee and toast.

Derek was sitting up on the couch, shirtless, the bandages across his ribs already showing small spots of blood where the wounds had protested movement.

He looked better.

The deep exhaustion had receded, replaced by the steady, watchful presence she had come to know.

The pack came and went in small groups.

Reports arrived: no fresh tracks, no unnatural cold spots, no residue left at the clearing.

The town remained unaware.

Sheriff Cole had driven the main road once and continued without stopping.

Late in the afternoon, the others cleared out, leaving Derek and Allison alone.

He patted the cushion beside him.

She sat.

For a while they simply existed in the quiet, the weight of the previous night settling into something manageable.

“You held your ground,” Derek said eventually.

“Even when it looked at you and spoke.

Most people break under that.”

Allison considered the memory of the Wraith’s layered voice and the way its eyes had reflected the moon.

“I was terrified.

I just didn’t run.”

“That’s the part that matters.” He turned his head to look at her fully.

“The pack saw it.

Mara saw it.

That changes things.”

“Changes them how?”

“They’ll accept you more easily now.

Because you stood in the circle and didn’t break.” His hand found hers, fingers threading through.

“There’s still a decision to make.

About how long you stay.

About what you are to this place once the immediate threat is gone.”

Allison looked down at their joined hands.

The mark on her throat where he had bitten her two nights earlier had darkened into a clear, unmistakable bruise.

“I’m not in a hurry to leave.”

Derek’s thumb brushed over her knuckles.

“Good.

Because I’m not ready to let you.”

The admission sat between them, plain and heavy.

Outside, the woods continued their slow return to ordinary life.

Birds called.

Wind moved through the pines.

Somewhere far off, a crow answered another crow.

The silence no longer felt like a held breath.
