Behind the wedding veil,The Dairy of April

Two Lives, One Heart

‎(Ophelia's POV)

‎The letter sat on Ophelia's coffee table long after sunrise.

‎She hadn't slept.

‎Every time she closed her eyes, Anonymous's words echoed in her mind.

‎Don't lose sight of why you became Ophelia. Ethan Ashford was never part of the plan.

‎She picked up the letter again.

‎There was no handwriting.

‎No fingerprints.

‎No clue about who had delivered it.

‎Anonymous had always been careful.

‎Painfully careful.

‎She folded the letter and unlocked the small safe hidden behind a painting in her study.

‎Inside were only three things.

‎April's leather-bound diary.

‎A flash drive.

‎And a thick brown file labeled:

ASHFORD FAMILY

‎She opened the file.

‎Photographs spilled across her desk.

‎Richard Ashford.

‎Celeste Harrison.

‎Board members.

‎Business associates.

‎And finally...

‎A photograph of Ethan's stepbrother.

‎She stared at it.

‎The man whose name had appeared more than once in April's diary.

‎The man Anonymous believed knew far more about April's death than he had admitted.

‎Her phone buzzed.

‎She quickly closed the file.

‎Ethan.

‎A smile tugged at her lips before she caught herself.

‎She answered.

‎"Good morning."

‎His warm voice came through the speaker.

‎"Good morning."

‎"I hope I didn't wake you."

‎"I've been awake for hours."

‎"You sound tired."

‎"I couldn't sleep."

‎There was a pause.

‎"I was thinking about yesterday."

‎"So was I."

‎Another silence.

‎Then Ethan laughed softly.

‎"I've been wondering something."

‎"What?"

‎"Do you always cook that well, or were you trying to impress me?"

‎She smiled despite herself.

‎"I could ask you the same thing about the pastries."

‎"I bought those."

‎"I know."

‎"I was hoping you'd think I baked them."

‎She laughed.

‎"You almost had me."

‎For a few minutes, they talked about nothing important.

‎The weather.

‎A book Ethan had started reading.

‎The children at St. Anne's.

‎It was simple.

‎Comfortable.

‎Dangerously comfortable.

‎When the call ended, Ophelia looked back at the brown file.

‎Her smile vanished.

‎"I can't forget."

‎She whispered the words as if reminding herself.

‎"I didn't become Ophelia to fall in love."

‎That afternoon, Vivian stopped by her office carrying lunch.

‎"You've been avoiding me."

‎"I've been working."

‎Vivian raised an eyebrow.

‎"You've also been thinking."

‎Ophelia didn't answer.

‎Vivian sat down across from her.

‎"Is this about Ethan?"

‎"It's about everything."

‎Vivian studied her friend's face.

‎"You're scared."

‎Ophelia looked away.

‎"What if I hurt him?"

‎Vivian frowned.

‎"Hurt him?"

‎"You barely know him."

‎"I know."

‎"But..."

‎She stopped herself.

‎She couldn't tell Vivian about Anonymous.

‎Or the file.

‎Or the diary.

‎Or the investigation.

‎Not yet.

‎Vivian reached across the desk and squeezed her hand.

‎"Whatever you're carrying..."

‎"You don't have to carry it forever."

‎Ophelia forced a smile.

‎"I know."

‎But she wasn't sure that was true.

‎Later that evening, Ophelia parked across the street from Harrison Holdings.

‎She wore a pair of dark sunglasses and a tailored blazer that made her blend in with the stream of professionals leaving nearby offices.

‎From her handbag, she removed a small notebook.

‎At exactly 5:45 p.m., a black luxury sedan rolled out of the underground parking garage.

‎The driver.

‎Ethan's stepbrother.

‎She watched quietly as the car turned onto the main road.

‎She waited five seconds.

‎Started her engine.

‎And followed.

‎Not too close.

‎Not too far.

‎The city traffic made it easier to stay unnoticed.

‎The sedan finally pulled into the parking lot of an exclusive private club.

‎Ophelia remained in her car.

‎She watched him step out.

‎A man in his forties approached him.

‎The two shook hands.

‎Their conversation looked tense.

‎The older man handed him a thick envelope.

‎No smiles.

‎No greetings.

‎Just business.

‎Suspicious business.

‎Before Ophelia could take another photograph, her phone began ringing.

‎She looked down.

‎Ethan Calling.

‎Her heart skipped.

‎If she answered...

‎He would hear the traffic.

‎If she ignored him...

‎He might worry.

‎She hesitated.

‎The call ended.

‎A second later, a message appeared.

‎Ethan: Just wanted to hear your voice. Call me when you're free.

‎She looked up.

‎The two men were already walking into the building.

‎She had missed her chance.

‎"Damn."

‎She rested her forehead against the steering wheel.

‎For the first time since taking on this mission, she realized something terrifying..

The closer she got to Ethan...

The harder it became to separate her heart from her purpose.

Across the city, Ethan stood on the balcony of his apartment, looking at the unanswered message.

He smiled faintly.

"Busy day, huh?"

He slipped his phone back into his pocket.

He trusted her.

He never imagined she had spent the evening following someone from his own family.

Back in her apartment, Ophelia unlocked the safe once more.

She opened April's diary.

A dried lavender flower fell from between the pages.

She gently picked it up and smiled sadly.

Then she turned to the page marked with a ribbon.

April's handwriting filled the paper.

At the bottom of the page, one sentence had been underlined three times.

"If anything happens to me... don't trust the Harrison family."

Ophelia stared at the words until her vision blurred.

Then she whispered,

"I won't fail you this time."

She closed the diary.

Outside her apartment window...

A figure stood across the street in the shadows.

Watching.

Waiting.

The glowing tip of a cigarette briefly lit the darkness before disappearing again.
