The bed was warm beneath us.
She looked up at me, eyes searching my face.
“Is this real?” she asked.
I didn’t answer right away.
Instead, I shifted closer, the mattress dipping softly under my weight.
“Yes,” I said finally.
“It is.”
She exhaled — a breath she’d been holding for a long time.
And for the first time since the world had split, both of us were somewhere safe.
She adjusted slightly beside me.
That was when I saw it.
At first, I thought it was a trick of the light — a reflection from the window, or my eyes still struggling to focus.
But the glow didn’t fade.
It hovered just above her head.
A small symbol, formed entirely of light.
1
It wasn’t bright enough to hurt.
It didn’t flicker.
It simply existed — steady, precise, undeniable.
My breath caught.
She noticed my silence.
“What is it?” she asked.
I didn’t answer immediately.
I sat up slowly, eyes fixed on the glowing mark.
The light traced the outline of her hair softly.
“It’s… above you,” I said.
She lifted a hand toward her head.
Her fingers passed through empty air.
“I don’t feel anything.”
The number remained.
Clear.
Cold.
Intentional.
Something stirred inside my chest — the power responding.
This wasn’t decoration.
This wasn’t coincidence.
It was a designation.
A count.
A rule.
She searched my face.
“What does it mean?”
I didn’t know the full answer.
But I felt it.
This was the world keeping track.
And for reasons I didn’t yet understand…
It had started with her.
A faint pressure pulled at my awareness.
I turned my head toward the mirror beside the desk.
It stood tall and narrow, catching the dim room light.
I moved slowly, afraid of what I might see.
I looked up.
And froze.
Above my head hovered another symbol.
0
Dim, but absolute.
Not weaker.
Just quieter.
My reflection stared back at me.
Same face.
Same eyes.
Same breath.
Only the number was different.
Behind me, I felt her tense.
“You see it too, don’t you?”
I nodded.
Zero.
Not nothing.
Not absence.
Origin.
The place before counting begins.
The power inside me stirred — not violently, not eagerly — but with recognition.
Whatever rule the world had written…
Whatever it was measuring…
It had begun with me.
I turned back to her.
She was watching closely — not afraid, not angry.
Waiting.
“I think I understand,” I said slowly.
“The number above you is one.”
Her fingers curled slightly.
“And the one above me… is zero.”
I took a breath.
“Zero isn’t nothing.
It’s the beginning.”
Her eyes flickered as the meaning formed.
“You were created from me.”
Silence stretched.
“You’re not fake,” I said quickly.
“You’re not less real.”
I swallowed.
“You’re a continuation.”
“And I’m the origin.”
She looked down, then back up.
“So… you’re zero.
I’m one.”
“Yes.”
She didn’t pull away.
She nodded.
“That makes sense.”
Something inside me settled.
This wasn’t hierarchy.
It was sequence.
Cause and effect.
I moved closer.
She didn’t retreat.
I wrapped my arms around her.
She stiffened — then relaxed, holding me back.
“It’s okay,” I whispered.
“I’m here.”
Her breath hitched, then steadied.
“I’ll never say you shouldn’t exist,” I said.
“You’re equal to me.
Always.”
Her fingers tightened once.
Then held.
The fear didn’t vanish.
But it loosened.
Two identical heartbeats slowly found the same rhythm.
For now, that was enough.
We lay back down.
Side by side.
The blanket pulled over us.
Her breathing slowed.
So did mine.
The room felt small.
Protected.
I closed my eyes.
A sound crept into my sleep.
Soft.
Metal against metal.
My eyes opened halfway.
The room was darker than it should have been.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Not familiar.
The handle shifted.
Stopped.
The door opened.
Just a fraction.
A shape moved through the gap.
I tried to sit up—
Fabric pressed against my face.
Rough.
Sudden.
Thoughts scattered.
Pressure surged inside my head.
The room twisted.
The last thing I saw was her.
Still beside me.
Unmoving.
Her chest didn’t rise.
Didn’t fall.
Darkness swallowed everything.
Cold air tore into my lungs.
I gasped.
Wind roared.
Concrete scraped my palms as I collapsed forward.
The rooftop.
The night sky.
Understanding hit like a blow.
She hadn’t moved.
Not once.
The power inside me stirred — cold, alert.
It had taken me.
And left her behind.
