Vaelorian sat at his desk, turning a pencil between his fingers. His notebook lay open in front of him. Several pages contained rough diagrams of cubes, spatial structures and unfinished questions about human perception. But today, his attention was fixed on something else.

The stranger.

More specifically, the small metallic disk hanging beneath the young man's collar.Full novel: Beyond the Dimensions or Existence — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Vaelorian could still remember the unusual mark engraved on it. A narrow line bent through a circular shape, almost like a symbol he had encountered somewhere before.

He opened his notebook and tried to draw it.

The first attempt looked wrong. He erased it and tried again, adjusting the angle of the line and the shape of the circle. After several attempts, he finally produced something close to what he remembered.

He stared at the drawing.

"Where have I seen this before?"

He searched through his books and looked through a few images online, but nothing matched it exactly. Some ancient symbols looked vaguely similar, but none were convincing.

Eventually, he closed the search window.

Perhaps it was simply a personal emblem.

Still, something about the encounter bothered him. The stranger had known about his interests without having any obvious reason to approach him. He had also spoken about awakening as though it were something real.

Vaelorian leaned back.

"Who exactly are these people?"

He had no answer.

Later that afternoon, he went outside to buy a few things. The streets were busy, and people moved between shops while vehicles passed along the road. He walked without much thought, occasionally checking his phone.

Then a sudden shout interrupted the ordinary noise.

A small child had stepped onto the road while chasing a ball. A vehicle was approaching from the opposite direction, and the driver had little time to react.

Before anyone could properly respond, a young woman moved.

Where the author publishes this chapter is also where readers support the work; this page copied it without permission.

She crossed the distance with startling speed, caught the child by the arm and pulled him safely away from the road.

The entire movement lasted barely a moment.

The vehicle passed.

People gathered around the child, checking whether he was hurt. His mother rushed forward and embraced him, repeatedly thanking the young woman.

Vaelorian had stopped walking.

He had seen what happened.

The woman hadn't merely reacted quickly. Her movement had seemed unusually precise, almost as though she had anticipated the danger before it occurred.

He looked at her more carefully.

She appeared completely ordinary. Her clothes were simple, and there was nothing visibly unusual about her appearance. She spoke calmly with the child's mother before stepping away from the gathering.

For a brief moment, her eyes met Vaelorian's.

She noticed that he was watching.

Her expression didn't change, but she looked at him for a second longer than necessary.

Then she walked away.

Vaelorian remained where he was.

"That was strange..."

He continued towards the shop, but his thoughts kept returning to what he had witnessed.

Perhaps she was simply an exceptionally fast person. Perhaps the circumstances had made the movement appear more unusual than it really was.

He didn't want to jump to conclusions.

But the encounter had reminded him of the stranger.

That evening, the young woman entered a quiet building and walked into a room where a communication device was waiting.

She activated it.

A faint voice answered.

"Report."

"I encountered the young man."

There was a brief silence.

"Did he recognise you?"

"No. But he noticed my movement."

"Did you approach him?"

"No. I only observed him."

The voice remained quiet for a moment.

"Continue your normal activities. Don't attract his attention."

The woman looked at the device.

"Understood."

The communication ended.

Elsewhere, an elderly man sat in a dimly lit room. The young stranger Vaelorian had encountered earlier stood before him.

"The boy has started investigating the symbol," the stranger reported.

The elderly man raised his eyes.

"How much does he know?"

"Almost nothing. He has only drawn what he remembers seeing."

"And the woman?"

"She encountered him today. He noticed her movement."

The elderly man considered this.

"Keep observing him. But no one is to approach him without my permission."

The stranger nodded.

"Do you think he has begun awakening?"

"Don't mistake curiosity for progress," the elderly man replied. "We have no confirmation of anything yet."

He turned towards the window.

"Let him continue his life. There is no reason to interfere."

The young man lowered his head and left the room.

Back at home, Vaelorian sat with his notebook open.

He looked at the drawing of the metallic symbol, then remembered the stranger's words.

Don't confuse curiosity with understanding.

He thought about the woman who had rescued the child. Her movement had been unusual, but he couldn't prove that it was anything beyond exceptional reflexes.

Still, the two encounters had left him with a question.

What if there were people living ordinary lives while possessing abilities that others couldn't easily explain?

He looked towards the window.

The world outside appeared completely normal.

People walked along the road, lights illuminated the nearby buildings, and distant conversations drifted through the evening air.

Perhaps he was overthinking everything.

Perhaps there was nothing unusual about any of it.

But for the first time, Vaelorian wondered whether the world he knew was only a small part of something much larger.
