Day 16 – The Society of the Past

When Zeynep returned to Istanbul, she was no longer the same Zeynep. Now she carried a truth hidden deep in her heart and tucked away in her bag: her mother’s letter, her true identity, and the shattered traces of a dark past.

As soon as she stepped into her small apartment, she took out her phone to look up the bookstore written on the address Şefika had given her. The note read:Full novel: BORN THROUGH THE DARKNESS — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

> “Fecr Bookstore – Balat, Ağaçaltı Street.

Someone might be waiting for you there.

Say just one word: Trace.”

As she walked through the narrow streets of Balat, her heart was pounding. Among the local residents, she spotted the shop with a red sign, tucked between old stone buildings.

The bells above the door jingled as she entered. The bookstore was nearly silent. The smell of dust mingled with the scent of history lingering on the shelves. A man was arranging old books. He was tall, bearded, and looked at Zeynep carefully through his glasses.

“Welcome,” he said politely.

Zeynep swallowed hesitantly.

“I’m just… looking for a trace.”

The man paused. His gaze sharpened. Then he nodded toward the back.

“Those who seek traces must be brave enough to carry the footsteps of those who left them behind,” he said.

“Come.”

Zeynep clutched her heart and stepped inside. They passed through a door into a dimly lit room. On the walls hung Ottoman documents, maps, prayers. In the center, there was an old table with several files on it.

The man walked over slowly and opened one of the files.

“Your mother Melike… left a trace for you here.”

Zeynep’s eyes widened.

“My mother came here?”

The man nodded.

“Years ago. Holding a tiny baby in her arms. She was looking for a place to hide. She had escaped the hands of the Society. This place was a small but resilient circle standing against that dark organization. We can’t stop them, but we can follow their traces.”

He handed Zeynep an old photograph. In the black-and-white photo, her mother stood with a young face, a mosque minaret in the background, a baby in her arms. Next to her, a man… his face scratched out.

“Who was this man?”

The man answered seriously.

“Your father. But not the kind of man you think. He was one of the original founders of a society called Nurhane. Outwardly they seem like a charitable group, but inside, they hold secret texts, ancient symbols, and dangerous secrets.”

A chill ran down Zeynep’s spine.

“Why did my mother stay silent then?”

“Because Nurhane has a legacy. Every founder must surrender their firstborn child to the system. Your mother refused. And she ran away with you. She gave you an ordinary life. That’s why we’ve been followed.”

Zeynep rubbed her forehead with her hands.

“I… so what do I do now?”

The man lowered his head.

“You have two paths: Forget. Move on with your life. Or join the fight your mother left unfinished. But remember, tracking traces comes at a cost.”

Zeynep closed her eyes. She whispered a prayer:

“Do not leave me to myself, O Lord…”

Then she opened her eyes.

“I will follow my mother’s path. I can’t find myself without knowing what this dark structure truly is.”

The man smiled.

“Then prepare for the night. Tomorrow night, we’re going to the House of Shadows. It’s one of Nurhane’s ancient centers.”

Zeynep’s knees felt weak. But there was no turning back now. Hope didn’t only bloom in light — it also grew in the truth hidden within the darkness.

To be continued…
