Day 18 – The Zemzem Dream
Zeynep carefully followed Yusuf down the spiral stone stairs leading underground. Each step felt as if it pressed upon a century-old secret. The air was heavy, the scent of dampness rising from deep below. Yusuf lit the path ahead with a small lantern. The silence was made only of footsteps; prayers rose silently from the heart to the heavens.
At the bottom of the stairs was a door. A line written in old Ottoman script drew attention:
"The secret opens with silence."
As Yusuf read the sentence, he spoke as if sighing:
"This place opens not just with words, but with intention."
He touched a stone beside the door with his fingers, then bowed his head. Zeynep placed her hands over her chest and prayed silently. The door slowly opened, as if of its own will.
What lay inside took their breath away. It was a chamber built at the center of an ancient underground cistern, but its circular design resembled a zikr circle. A beam of light fell from the ceiling — as if a piece of the heavens had descended underground.
On the walls were notes written in Arabic script — verses and, clearly, sentences in Melike Hanım’s own handwriting:
> "Every fall is a descent into zemzem. For hope flows into the heart most when you’ve fallen..."
Zeynep read the line and felt her throat tighten. Yusuf had moved to a table. On it lay an old leather-bound notebook. On the cover, just one word:
"Testimony."
As Zeynep touched the notebook, a warm sensation passed through her — like her mother's hand, or her mother's prayer... Familiar and painful all at once. When she opened it, a note greeted her on the first page:
> "Whoever seeks me, must first find themselves. For in the dark, it is not only the enemy that walks, but the denial within you. And this path can only be walked by those devoted to Allah. There is no turning back. Child, if you're here, I entrust you with this: the Truth."
Tears streamed from Zeynep’s eyes. This wasn’t just a book of knowledge; it was a farewell. A prayer, a will.
Just then, Yusuf’s lantern flickered. A distant hum rose from the end of a tunnel. Yusuf turned quickly.
“They may have followed us. We can’t stay here long.”
Zeynep placed the notebook in her bag. But as she stepped back, something caught her attention. In the center of the chamber was a miniature well. When she looked into it, she saw a reflection — but it wasn’t hers. It was her mother. Standing there. Staring at her.
And her mother’s lips moved. No sound. Just one word:
“Descend.”
Zeynep looked up. Met Yusuf’s eyes.
“I have to go down there.”
Yusuf’s eyes widened.
“No, not yet! It’s too deep!”
But Zeynep was resolute.
“My mother is there. Or the answer she left me.”
She placed her foot on the edge of the cistern, bent her knees, and slowly began
to descend into the water…
To be continued…
