Day 26 – The Voice of Confession

The man slowly stepped out from the bushes. His cloak was torn, his hair disheveled. But his eyes… Yes, Zeynep recognized those eyes. Even in the nights when she felt most vulnerable in her dreams, she had never forgotten that look.

— You…? Zeynep’s voice was barely a whisper.Full novel: BORN THROUGH THE DARKNESS — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The man fell to his knees. He pressed his palms against the ground. His breath was uneven, his voice hoarse:

— You remembered me… didn’t you?

Salih stepped forward slightly, gently placing a hand on Zeynep’s arm to signal caution. But Zeynep was already focused on this stranger, who had slipped through an old wound within her.

— You were one of those… who set up that dark night, Zeynep said. Her eyes held not anger, but surprisingly, pity.

— You… were one of the ones who lured us into that trap.

The man lowered his head.

— Forgive me. I… I was following orders. But the moment I looked into Yusuf’s eyes... everything changed. I didn’t give him up. On the contrary, I helped him leave a sign at the last moment. That stone… I put it in Yusuf’s pocket. So you could find him…

Suddenly, the meaning of the stone in Zeynep’s hand shifted. The stone wasn’t just a symbol of Yusuf—it was perhaps also a sign of this man’s remorse. Maybe hope wasn’t in the stone itself, but in the repentance behind it.

Salih knelt silently beside the man.

— Why are you coming to us now?

The man brought his hands together as if in prayer.

— Because you were being followed. From the very beginning of the road. Some of the shadow men have already infiltrated the place where Yusuf is staying. They’ll wait there until morning. If you go directly there, this journey will be your end.

A chill of fear settled in Zeynep’s heart.

— What about Yusuf?

— He doesn’t know yet. But as his awakening draws nearer, they’re getting closer too.

Salih looked up to the sky.

— The wind has changed direction. Tonight, the path will be different.

The man stood up.

— I can take you through a safe trail. But it’s longer, and darker.

Zeynep narrowed her eyes.

— Can I trust you?

The man remained silent. Then he pulled out a small, worn translation of the Qur’an. Its edges were frayed. On the inside cover was a note written in Zeynep’s childhood handwriting:

> “No matter how great the sins, repentance is a door. —Zeynep, 2005”

Zeynep took the book, her eyes filling with tears.

— This… this is mine…

The man cleared his throat.

— On the path to Yusuf, we carry not only footprints, but memories.

Zeynep took a deep breath.

— Alright. Show us the new path.

Salih nodded.

— But first… we pray. No matter how difficult the road, our intention must be entrusted to God.

They moved to a clearing at the edge of the forest. The three of them sat down on the ground. Silently, they raised their hands. What verse was read, what prayer was said—none of them would remember… But the sky recorded their surrender at that moment.

And then, the three of them began walking through the night on a new path leading to Yusuf. The moonlight seemed to illuminate only their steps.

But neither Zeynep nor Salih knew of the shadows trailing behind them.

To be continued…
