UNWELCOME GUEST

The wind howled outside the cave, carrying the scent of snow and pine.

Shen Chen sat in his alcove, Fang clutched in his hands, his body tense. The training had been going well—his movements were growing sharper, his instincts keener. But something had changed in the past few days.

He had felt it first as a subtle shift in the air, a faint unease that prickled at the back of his neck. The birds had stopped singing. The wind had grown still. The mountains had fallen into a silence that felt heavier than the cold.

Something's out there.

He had tried to dismiss it as paranoia, the lingering fear of a boy who had been hunted. But the feeling refused to fade. It grew stronger with each passing day, a constant pressure that pressed against his consciousness.

He ventured out of the cave, his steps careful, his eyes scanning the treeline. The forest was quiet—too quiet. The underbrush was still, the branches bare. The only sound was the crunch of his own footsteps against the frozen ground.

There.

A flash of movement in the shadows. A figure, dark and indistinct, watching him from the edge of the treeline.

Shen Chen's heart stopped. His hand tightened on Fang.

Who's there?

The figure vanished, its presence melting into the shadows like smoke.

Shen Chen stood frozen, his breath coming in shallow gasps. The cold bit at his skin, but he barely felt it. His mind was racing, his instincts screaming.

Someone is watching me. Someone is following me.

He retreated to the cave, his steps hurried, his eyes darting to the shadows. He felt exposed, vulnerable. The safety of his sanctuary had been breached, its walls no longer a shield against the world.

He sat in his alcove, Fang clutched in his hands, his body trembling. The darkness of the cave pressed against him, thick and suffocating.

Who was it? An assassin? A beast? A hunter?

He didn't know. And that uncertainty was more terrifying than any blade.

The night stretched on, silent and cold. And in the darkness, Shen Chen waited, his grip on Fang unyielding.

He didn't sleep. He couldn't. His eyes remained fixed on the cave entrance, his ears straining for the sound of footsteps.

None came.

The next morning, Shen Chen emerged from the cave with renewed caution.

His body ached from a sleepless night, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. But his mind was sharp, his senses on high alert. He moved through the forest with deliberate care, his footsteps silent against the frozen ground.

The tracks were faint—barely visible to the untrained eye. But Shen Chen had learned to read the land, to see the signs of passage that others missed. He found them near the stream: footprints, small and delicate, their edges blurred as if they had been made by a creature of shadow.

Human. Or something close to it.

He followed the tracks, his heart pounding. They led deeper into the mountains, winding through the dense underbrush. The terrain grew rougher, the vegetation thicker. And then, the tracks vanished.

Shen Chen knelt, his fingers brushing against the frozen ground. The tracks disappeared as if the figure had simply stepped into the air and vanished.

Impossible. How could they just... disappear?

He searched the area, his eyes scanning every shadow. But there was nothing. No sign of passage, no indication of direction.

A shiver ran down his spine. He felt exposed, vulnerable—a prey being hunted by a predator he could not see.

I need to leave. I need to find a new place to hide.

But even as the thought crossed his mind, he knew it was impossible. He had no destination, no allies, no resources. The mountains were vast, but he was still a boy alone against the world.

He returned to the cave, his steps heavy, his heart filled with a quiet dread. The sanctuary that had once been his refuge now felt like a cage—a place where he could be cornered, trapped, destroyed.

I can't stay here. But I have nowhere else to go.
