The road back to the mountain was quiet.

Shen Chen walked through the fading light, his footsteps steady against the frozen earth. The pouch of spirit stones was a comfortable weight in his robes, the vial of Blood Qi Pill secured in his inner pocket. The day's dealings had been productive—more productive than he had expected. The blacksmith had paid fairly. The alchemist had provided what he needed. And now, he was returning to the mountain with resources that would accelerate his cultivation.

The wind howled through the passes, carrying the scent of snow and pine. The sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of crimson and gold. He had perhaps an hour of light left before darkness fell. He would need to find shelter soon.Full novel: Boundless Legacy; Book I — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

There's a cave about two li ahead. I can make it before nightfall.

He pressed forward, his pace steady. The road was empty, the silence broken only by the crunch of his footsteps and the whisper of the wind. The solitude was a comfort—a familiar presence that had become a part of him.

And then, he heard it.

Footsteps. Multiple sets. Moving through the shadows ahead.

He stopped, his hand moving to Shadow's Edge. His eyes scanned the treeline, his senses sharp. The footsteps had stopped, but he could feel their presence—a group of figures, hidden in the shadows.

"You can come out," he said, his voice flat. "I know you're there."

A moment of silence. Then, a figure emerged from the shadows—a man, his face scarred, his body thick with muscle. Behind him, four more figures followed, their eyes gleaming with greed.

"You're a sharp one," the man said, his voice rough. "I'll give you that."

"What do you want?"

"What do you think we want?" The man's eyes traveled to the pouch of spirit stones visible beneath Shen Chen's robes. "You've been spending coin in Stonehaven. We saw you. A cultivator with a fine blade and a heavy purse. That's a tempting combination."

Shen Chen studied the men, his expression unchanged. They were rough—bandits, most likely, preying on travelers passing through the mountains. Their cultivation bases were low—Qi Condensation Realm (2nd to 4th Level). None of them were a threat.

"You're making a mistake," he said, his voice flat.

"A mistake?" The man laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "You're outnumbered five to one, boy. You're the one making a mistake."

"I'm not outnumbered."

He drew Shadow's Edge, the blade singing as it left its scabbard. The dark metal caught the fading light, its edge gleaming with a deadly sharpness. The bandits tensed, their hands moving to their weapons.

"You think you can fight all of us?" the leader said, his voice filled with contempt.

"I know I can."

The leader lunged, his blade aimed at Shen Chen's chest. He sidestepped, his body moving with a fluid grace that the bandit clearly hadn't expected. Shadow's Edge arced through the air, its blade finding the bandit's throat.

The man's eyes widened, a gurgling sound escaping his lips. He collapsed, his body crumpling to the ground.

"He killed him!" one of the bandits shouted, his voice filled with shock. "He killed him in one strike!"

The remaining bandits hesitated, their confidence shaken. Shen Chen didn't give them time to recover.

He moved.

Shadow's Edge sang through the air, its blade finding flesh. The first bandit fell, his throat opened. The second fell, his chest carved open. The third tried to run, but Shen Chen was faster. He caught the man before he could escape, his blade finding his spine.

The last bandit stood frozen, his face pale with terror. He had not moved, had not even tried to fight. His hands were raised, his body trembling.

"Please," he said, his voice a terrified whisper. "Please don't kill me. I have a family. I have children—"

"You should have thought of them before you chose this life."

Shadow's Edge moved, and the bandit fell.

Shen Chen stood among the corpses, his blade slick with blood. His breath was steady, his expression unchanged. He felt nothing—no satisfaction, no regret. Just the cold calculation of a survivor.

"You were right," he said to the dead, his voice flat. "You made a mistake."

He wiped his blade clean on one of the bandits' robes and sheathed it. The pouch of spirit stones was still secure in his robes. The vial of Blood Qi Pill was still intact.

He left the corpses where they lay. The scavengers would find them soon enough.

The rest of the journey was uneventful.

Shen Chen walked through the darkness, his steps steady, his senses alert. The encounter with the bandits had been brief, almost forgettable. He had seen worse. He had done worse.

He reached the cave as the moon was rising, its light casting silver shadows across the stone. The woman was waiting for him at the entrance, her scarred face illuminated by the pale glow.

"You're back," she said, her voice flat.

"I am."

"You were delayed."

"There were bandits on the road."

Her eyes narrowed. "And?"

"They're dead."

A flicker of something—approval? amusement?—crossed her face. "Good. They won't bother anyone else."

He walked past her into the cave, his steps echoing against the stone. The fire was burning low, its warmth a welcome comfort against the cold. He sat down in his alcove, his body aching with exhaustion.

"You have resources now," she said, settling across from him. "Pills. Spirit stones. What are you planning to do with them?"

"Cultivate. Push through to the next level."

"And then?"

He met her gaze, his expression unchanged. "And then I'll face the next trial. Whatever it is."

She was silent for a moment, her dark eyes unreadable. Then she nodded slowly.

"Good. You have learned patience. That is rare in one so young."

He didn't respond. Patience was not a virtue he had chosen. It was a necessity forced upon him by the circumstances of his life. But he had learned it, and he would use it.

"Rest tonight," she said. "Tomorrow, you will begin your cultivation."

She rose and retreated into the shadows, her steps silent against the stone. He watched her go, his mind already turning to the next step.

Tomorrow, I will consume the Blood Qi Pill. I will push through to the next level. I will grow stronger.

And then, I will face whatever comes next.
