RISE OF A YOUNG PRODIGY

The news of Shen Chen's failed spiritual root test spread through the Shen Clan compound like wildfire.

Within days, the whispers had grown into open conversations, their voices carrying through the corridors, the training grounds, and the dining halls. Servants spoke in hushed tones, their eyes filled with pity. Elders shook their heads, their expressions grim. The other children of the clan looked at Shen Chen with a mixture of contempt and curiosity, as if he were a curious specimen to be studied rather than a cousin to be loved.

"Rootless," they would whisper. "Can you imagine? A Shen with no spiritual roots."

"His father must be devastated. All those hopes, all those dreams... shattered."

"At least his cousin Shen Hao is a prodigy. The clan's future is safe with him."

Shen Chen heard every word. He was seven years old, but he understood the weight of their words, the cruelty hidden beneath their casual tones. He would walk through the corridors with his head bowed, his shoulders hunched, his eyes fixed on the ground. He tried to make himself small, invisible, a shadow that no one would notice.

But his cousin Shen Hao made sure that everyone noticed.

Shen Hao was eleven years old, a boy of sharp features and sharper ambitions. His cultivation base had already reached the Qi Condensation Realm (3rd Level), a feat that had earned him the admiration of the clan elders and the envy of his peers. His spiritual roots were of the High-Grade variety, a rarity that promised a future of greatness.

And he never let anyone forget it.

"Look at him," Shen Hao would say, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear. "The rootless one. The failure. The disgrace of the Shen Clan."

The other children would laugh, their voices sharp and cruel. They would crowd around Shen Chen, their faces twisted with mockery.

"What's it like, Chen?" one of them would ask. "To know that you'll never be anything?"

"Can you even feel spiritual energy? Or is your body just... empty?"

"Maybe you should leave the clan. Find a nice village where you can be a farmer. That's all you're good for."

Shen Chen would stand in the center of their circle, his body trembling, his hands clenched into fists. He wanted to fight back, to scream, to make them understand that he was more than what they saw. But he could not. He was rootless. He was powerless. He was nothing.

And so, he would lower his head and let their words wash over him, each one a wound that would never fully heal.

His mother, Shen Wei, tried to protect him. She would find him in his chambers after the bullying sessions, her eyes filled with a pain that mirrored his own. She would hold him close, her arms wrapping around his trembling body, her voice soft and soothing.

"They don't know what they're saying, my little dragon," she would whisper. "They don't understand your worth. But I do. I've always known."

"But Mother," Shen Chen would say, his voice choked with tears, "what if they're right? What if I really am worthless?"

She would pull back, her hands cradling his face, her eyes burning with a fierce intensity. "Listen to me, Chen. You are not worthless. You are my son, and I love you more than anything in this world. Your value is not determined by your cultivation. It is determined by your heart. And your heart, my little dragon, is pure and strong."

Shen Chen would nod, his tears drying on his cheeks. He believed her. He had no reason not to.

But the world outside their chambers was not so kind.

His father, Shen Tian, grew distant in the months following the test. He would spend long hours in his study, his face lined with worry, his eyes distant. He still loved his son, but he could not hide his disappointment. The Shen Clan had always produced cultivators of note. The thought that his own bloodline would produce a rootless child was a stain on his legacy, a wound that would not heal.

"I don't understand," he would mutter to himself, his voice filled with frustration. "I have High-Grade spiritual roots. My wife has Mid-Grade. How could our son be born rootless?"

He would shake his head, his thoughts spiraling into dark places. "Perhaps there's something wrong with him. Perhaps he's not truly my son. Perhaps—"

He would stop himself, ashamed of the thought. Shen Wei was faithful, devoted, and pure. The thought that she had been unfaithful was unworthy of him.

But the doubt lingered.

And in the shadows of the clan, his brother—Shen Li—began to scheme.
