THE EVIL PLOT
The seeds of betrayal were planted long before they bore fruit.
Shen Li was the younger brother of Shen Tian, a man of sharp features and sharper ambitions. He had spent his life in his brother's shadow, his Mid-Grade spiritual roots a constant reminder of his inferiority. He had watched as Shen Tian rose to the Nascent Soul Realm, his cultivation base a testament to his High-Grade roots. He had watched as Shen Tian became patriarch, his authority unquestioned, his power absolute.
And he had seethed with a jealousy that had festered for decades.
His wife, Lady Wu, was a woman of cold beauty and sharper cunning. She had married Shen Li not for love, but for ambition. She saw in her husband a man who could rise to power, and she intended to ensure that he did.
"Your brother grows weaker by the day," she would say, her voice smooth and calculating. "His grief over his son's failure has made him hesitant. Indecisive. The elders are beginning to notice."
"I know," Shen Li would reply, his voice filled with satisfaction. "I have been patient. I have been careful. But the time for patience is ending."
His son, Shen Hao, was the instrument of his ambition. The boy was a prodigy, his High-Grade spiritual roots a gift that had skipped a generation. He had reached the Qi Condensation Realm by the age of seven, a feat that had earned him the admiration of the clan elders and the envy of his peers. His future was bright, his potential limitless.
But Shen Li knew that his son's path to power would be blocked as long as Shen Tian and his family remained.
"The patriarch's son is rootless," Shen Li would say to his wife, his voice low and venomous. "He is no threat to Hao's status. But as long as he lives, there will always be those who see him as the rightful heir. They will always hope for his return."
"What do you intend to do?" Lady Wu would ask, her voice filled with a mixture of fear and curiosity.
Shen Li's eyes would narrow, his mind churning with dark thoughts. "I need to eliminate him. I need to eliminate all of them. The patriarch. His wife. Their worthless son."
Lady Wu's face would pale, her hands trembling. "That is... that is a dangerous path, husband. If you are caught—"
"I won't be caught," Shen Li would hiss. "I have allies in the clan, people who share my vision. Elder Chen is already aligned with us. Elder Wang can be persuaded. And the others... they will fall in line once I am in power."
His daughter, Shen Yue, would sometimes overhear their conversations. She was a cold girl, her loyalty to her brother absolute. She would listen to her father's schemes with a detached interest, her expression unreadable.
"What about the cousin?" she would ask one evening, her voice flat. "Shen Chen. What will happen to him?"
Shen Li would smile, a cold, predatory expression. "He will be dealt with. When the time comes, there will be no loose ends."
Shen Yue would nod, her expression unchanged. "Good. He is a stain on the clan's honor. He deserves nothing less."
Shen Li's first move was to sow seeds of doubt in his brother's mind. He would speak of Shen Wei, his words dripping with false concern, his tone carefully measured.
"Brother," he would say, his voice filled with a feigned reluctance, "I've noticed that Shen Wei has been spending a lot of time away from the compound. She says she's visiting the market, but I've heard... rumors."
Shen Tian's eyes would narrow, his hand tightening on his cup. "What kind of rumors?"
"Nothing I want to repeat," Shen Li would say, his voice filled with false reluctance. "But I worry about you, brother. I worry about your family's reputation."
The seeds took root, growing into a vine of suspicion that slowly choked Shen Tian's trust. He became distant, suspicious, his eyes cold and calculating. He would watch his wife with cold eyes, his questions sharp and accusatory.
"Where were you today, Wei?" he would ask, his voice flat.
"I was at the market, Tian. I told you this morning."
"The market. Of course. And who did you see there?"
Shen Wei would look at him, her eyes filled with hurt. "I saw no one of importance. I bought herbs for Chen's medicine. That is all."
But Shen Tian's suspicion was a wound that would not heal. He began to spend more time in his study, more time with his brother, more time away from his wife and son.
And Shen Li watched with cold satisfaction as his plan unfolded.
"It won't be long now," he whispered to his wife. "The patriarch is isolated. His wife is grieving. His son is broken. When the time comes, they will be easy to destroy."
He waited, patient and calculating. He knew that the time for action was approaching, and when it came, he would strike with precision and finality.
