Jinhae
I started running down the mountain.
Boots hammered loose shale. Pine branches whipped past my shoulders. Ahyun pounded after me, heavy tits bouncing hard under her traveling tunic, breath sharp.
This was another event only I could reach this early.
Later routes could stumble into it. But right now, tonight, I was the only bastard in the entire Murim who knew the exact timing, the exact trail, and the exact girl bleeding out under wolf teeth.
"Stay behind me," I said without looking back.
Ahyun's voice came tight and ready. "Yes, Young Master. Are we… are we going to fight the wolves?"
"I hope not." I yanked the two short torches free from the side of my pack. "Light these."
She didn't hesitate. Phoenix Flame flickered to life between her palms. She touched the pitch-soaked heads. Both torches caught with a hungry whoosh.
I could have used the flint kit. This was faster. And it let her feel useful.
We hit the lower clearing. First sight slammed into me exactly as the cutscene always framed it.
A figure on the ground. Back jammed against a fallen log. One arm raised defensively, the other clutching a torn sleeve dark with blood. White-and-blue robes, travel-stained but well-made.
One wolf already lunging for the throat.
I focused.
Mind Evolution snapped out like a needle.
The lead wolf staggered mid-air. Body locked for a full second, eyes glazing as the mental spike drove straight through whatever passed for thought inside its skull. It crashed short, claws gouging dirt instead of flesh.
I raised both torches high and roared.
"HYA!"
The sound tore up from deep in my chest.
The nearest wolf recoiled. Lips peeled back from yellow fangs. It still tried to snarl, still tried to look big, but the fire and the sudden stagger of its packmate made it uncertain.
Ahyun burst into the clearing right behind me. She had snatched a thick fallen branch. She swung it in wide, shaky arcs, voice cracking between shouts.
"G-get back! Back! I'll— I'll burn you! I mean it!"
The pack hesitated.
The easy meal had just become three moving targets and open flame. Wolves were smart enough. The big scarred male at the rear—clearly the leader—gave a low cough of a growl and started backing. The others followed, ears flat, eyes reflecting torchlight.
I advanced.
Torches sweeping. Every step pushed them farther. They melted into the treeline one by one until only the night sounds remained.
I lowered the torches. My pulse jumped once, hard, then settled.
"You alive?" I called.
The figure on the ground pushed up on one elbow. Young face. Dark eyes still wide with leftover terror but already narrowing as composure clawed its way back. Thin frame. Almost too thin. Narrow shoulders under the white-and-blue robes.
The crest of the Haeun Sword House sat stitched over the left breast.
That was what he wanted everyone to believe.
I already knew better.
This swordsman was a girl.
Seolhwa.
Concealed heir of the Namgung Sword Sect. The woman who would one day stand before the entire Jungwon, drop the bindings, and inherit one of the oldest sword houses in the Murim. The woman who would cut down three Iron Gate elders at Baekhak Pass.
The Azure Sword Phoenix.
Right now she was eighteen, traveling under a false name, with wolves between her and her blades.
Most people would miss it. The cropped hair. The voice pitched low. The bindings that flattened what little chest she had from collarbone to lower ribs every single morning. She played the role well.
But if you knew, you saw the tells. The lashes too long for a boy. The throat too smooth. The faint curve of hip the tailored robes could not quite erase. Small tits under the linen wraps — almost nothing even in the game's most generous renders. A body built lean and deadly instead of soft.
She looked up at me, still breathing hard.
"Is it over? Did they run?"
"For now," I said. "As long as we keep the fire."
She tried to stand. Her left arm buckled. A long tear ran from forearm to elbow, blood still welling dark. She gritted her teeth, forced the limb to move, and failed.
Ahyun was already moving.
"Sit. Please—sit." She dropped to her knees beside the log, medicine bag open in a heartbeat. Clean cloth. Water flask. A small pot of salve that smelled of crushed herbs. "I need to see the wound."
Seolhwa—still playing the boy—hesitated only a second, then let Ahyun take the arm. Gentle fingers cleaned the gash, pressed gauze, wrapped it tight with practiced speed.
I left them and walked the grass.
Two swords lay where they had been knocked free. Matching white-and-blue cords on the hilts. I picked them up, wiped the dew on my sleeve, and carried them back.
Seolhwa's eyes locked on the blades the moment I approached. Relief cracked through the carefully blank mask.
I held them out hilt-first.
"Yours."
She took them with her good hand. Fingers closed like she was greeting old friends.
"Thank you." The voice stayed low, roughened on purpose. "I… I would have spent half the night searching."
A soft blue flicker only I could see.

She bowed as deeply as the injured arm allowed.
"You saved my life. Both of you. I am in your debt."
Ahyun finished the last knot on the bandage and sat back on her heels.
"Rest the arm tonight. Change the gauze tomorrow. Keep it clean and it should close cleanly. No sparring tomorrow."
Seolhwa flexed the fingers experimentally. Winced. Nodded.
"You're a healer?"
Ahyun's cheeks pinked. She glanced at me, then down.
"I am… I serve Young Master Kang. I only know a little—"
"She will be a first-rate healer," I cut in. "One of the best the Orthodox Faction has ever produced. You're simply meeting her early."
Ahyun's head snapped up. Eyes wide. Fresh color flooded her face all the way down her throat. The status panel beside her head pulsed.

Seolhwa studied me properly for the first time. Dark eyes sharp beneath the boyish fringe.
"Kang… House Kang of the capital outskirts?"
"Kang Jinhae." I gave the exact polite half-bow of a minor noble's eldest. "Eldest son. And yes. You know the name."
Of course she did.
Namgung blood knew every minor house that might one day matter. Their compound sprawled across three mountains in the southern provinces. Patriarch Namgung Cheon had reached the Transcendent Realm before fifty. Their techniques were the kind other sects whispered about. Their bloodline was feared.
And their sole heir was a woman.
Hidden since birth. Raised as a son. Trained as a son. Presented to the world as the promising young master who would inherit everything. Robes cut to hide the body. Chest bound flat every dawn.
We started walking toward the city lights far below.
Torches still burning. Ahyun close on my left. Seolhwa on my right, swords now sheathed, injured arm held carefully against her side.
"Where were you headed?" I asked.
"Royal Academy." The answer came quick. "Entrance trials open in three weeks. I was traveling the long road. Training while I moved."
I let a small smile show.
"No hurry then?"
She glanced sideways. "Why?"
"I'm going to the same trials." I kept my tone light.
Surprise flickered across her face before she locked it down.
"I… did not expect House Kang's eldest to walk the martial path at all. Rumors said—"
"I'm no martial artist," I said. "I'll be attending the support track. If you have no pressing timeline, stay at the Kang estate. We can travel together. Train together on the road. Safer than sleeping in city inns alone with a fresh wound."
Seolhwa's steps slowed half a beat.
"I planned to take a room in the merchant quarter. I have coin."
I looked at Ahyun.
One glance. That was all it took.
My good girl stepped in smoothly, voice soft and earnest.
"Young Master… the outer inns will already be full. The merchant caravans arrived yesterday for the monthly market. Every decent room is taken until the next full moon. The cheap ones…" She bit her lip. "They are not safe for a wounded traveler carrying good steel."
Seolhwa's jaw flexed. Coin or roof. Pride lost.
She looked at me again. Measuring.
"You would offer a stranger your roof."
"I would offer a fellow Academy candidate a roof," I corrected. "And the chance to repay the debt by sparring with me once that arm heals. I need the practice."
A long silence.
Finally she gave a short, sharp nod.
"…I accept. For a few days only. Then we leave for the capital together."
"Good."
Another soft blue flicker.

We walked on toward the distant city glow.
I smiled into the dark.
I was only getting started.
