Two days remained before Caius and Sereth would leave the valley. They had spent the previous days preparing everything they could for the journey north: treating and drying the scaled hides, preserving meat, and packing away useful bones and horns. Their supplies were still limited, but enough to give them a better chance of surviving the long trek through the frozen wastes.
They decided to make one final hunt. The valley had provided them with enough food so far, but Sereth did not want to depend on finding game once they entered the northern wilderness. A successful hunt now could mean several more days of food later.
By midday, they had found their prey: a large mountain ram with thick gray wool and heavy curled horns. The animal was stronger than the scaled stag they had hunted before, but Caius managed to place a clean arrow into its chest after using Far Sight to locate its heart.
Now the carcass lay between them as they worked. Sereth opened the animal and removed the best cuts of meat while Caius carefully separated the hide from the body. The work required concentration, but Caius's attention was not entirely on the carcass.
Something had changed. He felt it before he saw anything.
Caius activated Far Sight. The familiar sensation spread through his vision as his perception expanded around him, his ability to detect mana within a twenty-meter radius having grown far more precise during their days of training.
Then he noticed it. The presence had entered his detection range.
For days, whatever had been watching them had remained beyond the limits of his Far Sight, never coming close enough for him to locate properly. Now it had. Something was moving toward them.
Caius kept his eyes on the carcass and continued cutting. "Do you sense it?"
Sereth did not look up. "Yes."
His voice was calm.
"It is getting closer," Caius murmured.
"Close enough," Sereth replied, his hand moving casually toward one of his blades. "We will evade when it attacks. I will engage it with my blades. You will wait for an opening. When you see one, take your shot."
Caius nodded slightly, continuing to cut through the meat as though unaware of the approaching presence.
The valley remained still. No birds called from the ruins, no animals moved through the grass, and even the distant sound of the stream seemed quieter than before.
Through Far Sight, Caius felt the presence advancing. Then came a sudden surge of energy gathered somewhere above them.
Caius's eyes lifted slightly toward the cliffs. Sereth felt it at the exact same moment.
"Above," Sereth warned.
Caius looked upward. For a moment, he saw nothing. Then four eyes opened in the darkness of the cliffside. Two lower eyes reflected the faint gray light of the valley, while the upper pair seemed to look directly through him. They were not ordinary eyes; through Far Sight, Caius could see them actively sensing the mana within his body.
The creature had been there all along, watching them from the height. Its body was enormous, its dark hide blending seamlessly with the basalt stone. A mane of metallic quills surrounded its neck, each blade-like spine overlapping the next. Its massive hooked claws were embedded in the cliff face as it hung upside down above them, a long tail curling behind a body that ended in a double-edged blade.
Caius felt his heart tighten. "It is above us."
Sereth was already moving as the creature released its grip and dropped from the cliff, its massive body disappearing into the gray mist. Sereth grabbed Caius and pulled him aside just as the beast struck the ground where they had been kneeling. The impact shattered stone, sending dust and debris across the clearing.
Caius rolled across the ground, coming up with his bow in hand. The creature rose, its four eyes immediately locking onto him as its mane flared and several metallic quills snapped outward.
"Move!" Sereth shouted.
They scattered as the quills launched from the creature's mane, striking the stone around them with enough force to bury themselves into the ground. One passed dangerously close to Caius's face before he dropped behind a broken stone wall.
Sereth disappeared into the settling dust. The creature did not roar; it simply turned its head in complete, predatory silence.

Activating Far Sight once more, Caius realized the beast's upper eyes were reading their mana to pinpoint their locations.
Sereth emerged from the dust and attacked, his dark blue mana flowing through his body as he used the Flow Step. His movement was almost silent as he closed the distance, blades flashing toward the creature's throat.
The beast twisted. Sereth's first blade struck its armored shoulder instead, barely cutting through the hide. Before he could recover, the creature's tail swept around. Sereth jumped backward as the tail-blade sliced through the air where his torso had been, landing and immediately changing direction.
The beast followed, its movements far faster than something of its size should have been capable of.
Caius raised his bow and searched for an opening. Through Far Sight, he could see the beast's mana moving beneath its hide, its muscles being reinforced by a dense flow of energy.
Sereth attacked again. When the beast raised one of its massive claws, Sereth slipped beneath it and drove his blade into its ribs. Dark blood spilled from the wound, and a deep growl finally emerged from the creature's chest as its quill-mane expanded violently.
Sereth retreated instantly. Caius drew his bowstring, and the creature turned toward him, four eyes locking onto the boy. For a moment, Caius felt as though the beast could see directly into his body.
Then its mana surged, and it lunged.
Caius released the arrow. The beast twisted in midair, taking the hit in its side instead of its chest. The impact slowed it, but the creature continued forward.
Caius stepped backward, too slow to evade the downward strike of the beast's claw.
Sereth appeared between them, his blades crossing against the creature's claws. The impact drove the dark elf backward several meters, while Caius stumbled away.
"Run!" Sereth called out.
Caius did not run. He drew another arrow, focusing Far Sight entirely on the creature. The beast's mana pattern became clear; its energy was gathering before every attack.
He remembered his father's words: Do not react to the body. Read the energy before the movement.
The creature's mana compressed into its hind legs. Caius knew where it would move.
"Sereth! Left!"
Sereth trusted him, shifting left just as the beast launched. The creature missed its target, leaving its chest exposed for one brief moment.
Caius released. The arrow struck deep beneath the beast's ribs, crashing it into the ground.
It rolled and rose again, blood running from its mouth, its four eyes remaining fixed upon them.
"That should have killed it," Sereth said, staring at the beast.
"It is stronger than anything we have encountered," Caius replied, lowering his bow slightly.
The beast's quills began to rise again. Sereth tightened his grip on his blades. "Then we end it quickly."
The creature lunged once more. Sereth moved first, slipping beneath its claws to drive both blades into its wounded side. The beast twisted violently, its tail-blade striking Sereth across the ribs and throwing him several meters against the stones.
"Sereth!"
Caius's breathing quickened as the creature turned toward him, having chosen its target. He drew another arrow and activated Far Sight as the beast charged.
Beneath its hide, the beast's mana structure lay exposed. Caius saw the pulsing core buried deep within its body. He steadied his breathing, and his black core responded, dark energy gathering around the arrowhead.
The beast accelerated. Caius waited until the last possible second, then released.
The black arrow struck directly into the creature's chest. Dark energy exploded through its body, causing the beast to stagger. Its four eyes widened, and for several seconds, it remained standing before its legs collapsed. The massive body crashed onto the stone floor, and silence returned to the valley.
Caius lowered his bow. Sereth slowly pushed himself upright, blood staining his clothing where the tail-blade had struck him. He looked at the dead creature, then at Caius.
"That was close," Sereth murmured.
"It was watching us," Caius said, staring at the enormous beast.
Sereth nodded, approaching the corpse cautiously. "It was not a normal beast."
Caius looked toward the ram carcass. "I will finish the ram."
"Do that."
Caius returned to the mountain ram. His hands were still trembling slightly from the battle, but he forced himself to concentrate, skinning the ram carefully, separating the usable meat, and removing the organs that could be preserved. By the time he finished, the ram had been reduced to what they could reasonably carry.
He gathered the supplies and returned to Sereth, who had already begun examining the strange creature's anatomy. The metallic quills were embedded deeply around its neck and shoulders, their edges razor sharp even in death.
Sereth used a blade to separate several quills from the hide. "Do not touch the tips."
"Because of the poison?" Caius asked.
"The tail is poisoned. I am not certain about the quills," Sereth said, examining one carefully. "I will assume everything that came from this creature is dangerous until proven otherwise."
Sereth moved to the tail, where a dark substance coated portions of the double-edged blade. He carefully cut through the base and separated the weapon from the body. "This toxin may be useful, but until we understand what it does, we keep it sealed." He wrapped the tail carefully in layers of cloth.
Together, they removed several of the strongest metallic quills, as well as thick sections of hide and durable claws.
Finally, Sereth opened the creature's chest to reach its core. The moment it was exposed, a strange pressure filled the air. The core was dark and dense, far stronger than that of the scaled stag.
"I have never seen a core like this," Sereth said, examining it for several moments before wrapping it and placing it inside his storage ring. "We will study it later."
Caius looked back at the corpse. "What was that thing?"
"I do not know," Sereth replied, looking toward the towering cliffs. "Whatever it was, it did not belong to any beast I have ever encountered."
Caius glanced toward the ancient ruins, the lingering thought returning to him: they had been watched for days. Perhaps the creature had been the only watcher, or perhaps not.
"We have enough," Sereth said, gathering the remaining parts.
They carried the ram meat, preserved hide, metallic quills, poisoned tail, and strange core back toward their shelter. Their final hunt had given them more than food; it had given them a mystery neither of them understood.
And somewhere beyond the ancient ruins, hidden from their sight, the gray valley remained silent.
