Ashton couldn’t help but immediately start thinking of alternatives to his current circumstances.
What the nurse just said confirmed his speculations even further; Lord Marlus was actually behind all of this. But knowing that didn’t give him any solutions to the problem, so he had to take his mind off it as soon as possible and think of what to do.
’Should I try to steal any one of them?’ he thought.
He immediately scrapped the idea when he looked all around him; there were enough men that looked ready to tear him apart at a moment’s notice, so stealing wasn’t a viable option.
And he couldn’t make his own either; he didn’t know anything about the poison or medicine or pharmacy, so trying to create his own wasn’t really a viable option.
"Someone will be out now to hand over the temporary remedy now; they said it should last for about two weeks," the nurse said before turning around to leave after giving Ashton one more look of pity.
The crowd grew more agitated as they awaited the so-called distributor.
Ten minutes later, someone finally opened the door and came out of the house holding a tray of small black Glass bottles. The moment his eyes landed on that person, the little hope he had in his heart was snuffed out.
He had previously intended to beg whoever was in charge, but when he saw the person, he was certain there was no hope at all.
The person distributing it was the same man that had beaten him to a pulp just yesterday; it was Cornelius’s partner.
The man had left with so much bottled-up rage, so Ashton was sure that the man was coming at him with everything he had any chance he got.
"This was provided by Lord Marlus, one free trial for every one of you."
"This is the only free one you get; if you need more, come over to the warehouse just after the town cathedral, and you will find me there."
"Make sure to come with enough money."
While he said that, he had already begun passing the medicine out bottle by bottle. For most people there, they had already removed the cap and poured the remedy down their throat almost immediately.
They didn’t waste a single second.
Ashton watched all of this from somewhere quite distant; he couldn’t afford a confrontation with the man at this moment.
After a few more rounds, he was done passing out the medicine, and almost everyone had left, except Ashton and a few people that came there for other reasons.
He was waiting for the nurse to come back out for these people and use that chance for himself. Thankfully he didn’t have to wait for too long, as the Nurse soon came outside, but she wasn’t alone.
That man was beside her.
The duo came out to see the few people outside, and almost instantly the two of them locked eyes with Ashton. Though they were both looking at the same person, their reactions were very different.
While the nurse looked at him with the same pitiful eyes she had always looked at him with, the man, on the other hand, had his smile slowly morph into a smirk.
Seeing Ashton in a pitiful state such as this gave him a really massive boost in his self-confidence.
With that, he didn’t spare Ashton any more effort; he just slowly walked away to him the battle was over.
Ashton looked at him for a brief moment and then proceeded to ignore him; the time for the battle wasn’t now. For now, he was here for the remedy.
He made sure the man had walked a fair distance away before rushing to meet the Nurse.
"Please, Lady Nurse, I really need the remedy; I don’t mind paying for it."
The nurse looked at him with a helpless and slightly hesitant face.
"I want to help you, I really do, but my hands are tied; I don’t dare go against Lord Marlus’s will. I have a family too."
Ashton was about to say something more, but the nurse didn’t wait to listen; she immediately turned around to leave.
Just like that, Ashton was left standing alone on the side.
’There’s no reason to return home now; I might as well stay here until I get an idea.’
Ashton stood a little off to the side of the house like a weird stalker. He watched as the nurse answered each of them one at a time until there was no one standing there anymore.
Now the nurse turned around and entered her house.
"It seems like there’s no hope here anymore," he muttered before turning around to leave.

He hadn’t taken more than five steps when he suddenly heard someone call his name from behind.
Ashton hurried and turned around to see the Nurse standing in front of her house with a small bag in her hand.
"You can have this," she said with an outstretched hand.
Ashton rushed back to her front and accepted the bag with a face full of glee.
"In this bag is a broken bottle of the remedy; though most of the contents have been spilled, it should be enough to ease the pain for a while," she said.
For the first time in a while, Ashton actually smiled. He accepted the bag with excitement and immediately bowed to the nurse.
"I really appreciate this gesture; I will make sure to repay you in any way I can," he added before turning around to run.
This time, he ran faster than he did when he was even coming here, something he never believed was possible.
"I am coming, Selene; I am coming soon."
