For two entire days, the cocoon remained in the middle of the ruined village without movement.

The black shell had hardened over time, its surface rough and layered like cooled volcanic glass.

Nothing came out.

Nothing went in.

And through all of it, the chieftain never moved.

He sat before the cocoon with Varkhalion resting beside him, one massive hand planted against the axe handle while his eyes remained fixed ahead.

Rain came once during the second night.

He did not react.

The trolls rebuilt what they could around him carefully, never getting too close.

Even the children kept their distance.

Nobody wanted to interrupt whatever silence existed between the chieftain and the thing sealed inside the cocoon.

Humbaba had recovered enough to stand again, though his body was still covered in bruises and bandages.

Grisha remained near him often while Rujark helped move supplies deeper into the forest in case evacuation became necessary.

But every now and then, all of them looked back toward the cocoon.

Waiting.

Then on the third day— crack.

The sound spread through the village sharply.

Everyone stopped moving.

Another crack followed.

Thin lines of pale light began leaking through the hardened shell.

The cocoon twitched once before splitting wider.

Pieces of the shell broke away slowly and hit the ground with heavy thuds.

Something spilled out.

Not flesh.

Not liquid.

Something between both.

A shifting distorted mass poured itself across the ground in uneven movements before gathering together at the center of the ruined village.

The substance trembled violently before hardening into crystal-like fragments suspended unnaturally in space.

The distortion looked worse now.

Far worse.

Looking directly at it for too long made the eyes ache.

Pieces of it flickered in and out of existence while reflections bent unnaturally around its body like shattered mirrors trying to imitate shape.

Then it spoke.

“A… aaaahhh…”

The thing inhaled sharply.

“Finally… maggots can understand… or not understand… me…”

Several trolls instinctively stepped backward.

The distortion laughed quietly to itself.

“Hehe… hehe… hiiii… hihi…”

Its voice kept changing tone mid-sentence.

“So many young ones… to watch morph in pain as they each get impaled…”

The fragmented body twitched excitedly.

“Ahhhh… I feel warmth… expectation…”

Its laughter suddenly stopped.

“Am I intelligent?

I do not know.

Am I foolish?

I do not know.”

The mirrors inside its body shifted endlessly while cracks spread through the air around it.

“What is meaning?

Why meaning?

Everything ends…”

The distortion clutched at itself violently.

“I know feeling… I hate it… but think I want it… but do not know want enough to want wanting…”

The thing paused.

Its voice lowered.

“I invalidate meaning.”

Then it burst into laughter.

Not normal laughter.

It sounded painful.

Joyful.

Broken.

Ecstatic.

“Hahahahahahahahahahaha!”

The entire village felt colder hearing it.

But the chieftain finally moved.

Slowly.

He stood.

The ground beneath his feet cracked instantly.

The trolls nearby froze. This story is hosted at g.com.

Even Humbaba went silent.

This was not the same presence they had felt before.

The chieftain had always been powerful.

Immense.

Overwhelming.

But this— this felt ancient.

Veins bulged across his massive arms and neck like dark roots beneath stone.

His muscles tightened so violently that parts of the air around him distorted under the pressure of his presence alone.

His breathing had deepened into something heavy and controlled, each exhale carrying heat like a furnace.

His eyes no longer looked calm.

They looked merciless.

Pure wrath rolled off him in waves so dense that several trolls instinctively lowered themselves without understanding why.

Grisha herself felt her heartbeat quicken just from standing nearby.

Rujark stared silently.

He had seen the chieftain fight before.

This was different.

The chieftain looked less like a living being and more like war itself had taken shape.

Not rage without purpose.

Not blind violence.

This was the wrath of something ancient deciding that destruction was necessary.

Varkhalion trembled beside him.

The massive axe almost seemed alive beneath his grip.

Faint markings along the weapon glowed dimly as the chieftain lifted it from the ground with one hand.

The distortion noticed him fully for the first time.

Its laughter weakened slightly.

The chieftain pointed Varkhalion directly toward it.

“Know your place.”

His voice shook the air harder than the distortion’s screaming had.

“You are beneath incomplete.”

The fragmented creature twitched violently.

“You are sad to look upon.”

The chieftain stepped forward once.

The village floor shattered beneath his foot.

“This day,” he said calmly, “I shall correct my mistake.”

The veins across his body darkened further while Varkhalion emitted a low metallic hum.

“You will cease.”

Do Not mess with a war spirit ogre
