The following morning came with no peace in it.

The sky of Astra Noctis remained unchanged, dim, suspended, endless.

The settlement stirred to life as it always did.Full novel: Cease Essence (Origins) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Fires were rekindled.

Steel rang against stone.

Voices rose and fell in familiar rhythm.

But beneath it all, something lingered.

Something unresolved.

Kaizer Rin stood at the edge of the settlement, his axe resting across his shoulder.

Around him, the younger ogres gathered, preparing for the task given by the chieftain.

A wyvern hunt.

Not a trial.

Not a choice.

but a necessity

Wyverns nested along the northern ridge beyond the forest.

If left unchecked, they would descend toward the settlement within days.

Hunting them was part of growing up among the ogres.

Lujum pointed toward the treeline.

“If we move fast, we’ll reach the nests before midday.”

Morjor folded her arms.

“Or they’ll reach us first.”

“That’s the point.”

“That’s a bad point.”

Kaizer didn’t join in.

His eyes remained fixed on the forest.

“…You feel it too?” Bruknash asked quietly.

Kaizer glanced at him.

“…Yeah.”

That was all.

Rujark stepped forward, spear in hand.

His presence alone was enough to quiet the group.

“I’ll be supervising.

You follow formation.

You track before you strike.”

Lujum groaned.

Morjor nodded.

Kaizer said nothing.

“…Move.”

They entered the forest.

The moment Kaizer crossed the boundary something shifted.

Back in the settlement, the air changed, not violently or suddenly, but undeniably.

Grakthar stood still at the center of the village.

“…Now.”

Beside him, Humbaba drew his sword.

“…It waited.”

The fires dimmed.

Not extinguished.

Just… less.

Nearby ogres began to notice.

“…What’s happening?”

At the center of the settlement, space bent inward.

It did not flicker like before.

It held, stabilized, and then, it formed.

The Echo did not appear.

It assembled.

A tall, uneven shape pulled itself into existence.

Limbs formed, then shifted slightly out of place.

Its body flickered between presence and absence, as if it couldn’t decide what it was meant to be.

Where a face should have been, there was only a hollow.

And yet, it was watching.

Weapons were drawn instantly.

Grakthar raised his hand.

“No one moves.”

Silence fell.

No one disobeyed.

He stepped forward and reached behind him.

The moment his hand closed around the haft of his weapon, the air steadied.

The handle was dark and ancient, faint veins of life pulsing beneath its surface; a fragment of the World Tree itself.

The blade was massive, forged from metal that still carried the memory of fire.

Ember-like cracks glowed faintly beneath its surface, as though the forge had never truly released it.

Varkhalion.

Not a weapon that decided what was true.

Not something that rewrote existence.

It forced instability to collapse beneath the weight of reality.

The Echo reacted.

Not with fear but resistance.

It moved.

One moment, it stood at the center.

The next, it was across the settlement.

A pillar split, fire died, ground cracked.

“…It’s testing,” Humbaba said.

Grakthar didn’t answer.

He moved.

The ground shattered beneath his step.

In the forest, Kaizer and the others slowed.

Rujark crouched low, examining the ground.

“Tracks.”

Kaizer stepped closer.

Large claw marks.

Deep.

Fresh.

“…Three,” Kaizer said.

Rujark nodded.

“Good.”

A distant screech echoed through the trees.

Lujum froze.

“…That’s not small.”

Kaizer tightened his grip on the axe.

“…Good.”

A shadow passed overhead.

Then, a crash.

A wyvern dropped from above.

Its wings were massive, its scales jagged and dark.

Its screech tore through the forest as it landed, claws digging into the earth.

“MOVE!” Rujark shouted.

The group scattered.

Kaizer didn’t step back.

He stepped forward.

The wyvern lunged…

Kaizer swung.

Steel met scale.

Back in the settlement, the Echo surged across rooftops, its movements unnatural, leaving glimpses of itself behind like broken reflections.

Grakthar gave chase.

Humbaba followed close behind, his blade drawn.

The sword absorbed the light around it, its presence quiet, heavy, and wrong in a way that couldn’t be explained.

The Echo shifted again.

A structure split apart in its wake.

Another fire died.

Humbaba cut across its path.

His blade struck and connected.

The Echo’s form twisted violently, bending in ways that shouldn’t exist.

“…It’s adapting,” Humbaba said.

“…Then it will fail faster,” Grakthar replied.

He closed the distance instantly.

Varkhalion came down.

The impact shattered the ground.

The Echo collapsed inward then violently corrected itself.

Stronger, faster.

Understanding more and more at an alarming pace.

In the forest, the wyvern struck again.

Bruknash intercepted, his blade catching the creature’s claw just long enough to stop it from tearing through him.

“Kaizer!”

Kaizer moved instantly.

He closed the distance and struck again.

The wyvern roared.

Back in the settlement, the Echo surged toward Grakthar not to attack but to anchor itself.

To become real through him.

“…No.”

Grakthar stepped forward and swung again.

This strike carried neither flash nor spectacle, only certainty.

The axe connected and the Echo broke.

Not destroyed but undone.

Its form split.

Its presence faltered.

For the first time, it lost hold.

Humbaba moved in from the side.

His blade cut through the unstable form, and where it passed, the Echo seemed to forget itself.

It flickered violently.

Its shape collapsing, failing.

Then it stopped.

Watching, Learning.

In the forest, Rujark drove his spear forward.

The wyvern staggered.

Kaizer leapt.

His axe came down, clean and decisive.

The wyvern collapsed.

Silence followed.

Back in the settlement, the Echo withdrew.

Not defeated or destroyed.

Learning.

Its form folded inward and vanished.

The pressure lifted, the fires returned the air steadied.

Humbaba exhaled slowly.

“…It’s gone.”

Grakthar shook his head.

“…No.”

“…It retreated.”

That was worse.

“…It will return,” Humbaba said.

“Yes.”

Grakthar looked toward the forest.

“…And next time—”

His grip tightened around Varkhalion.

“…it will come to exist.”

Far from the settlement, Kaizer stood over the fallen wyvern.

The others spoke.

Relief, excitement, noise, but Kaizer didn’t listen.

He looked back toward the direction of the village.

“…Something’s wrong.”
