With his instructions given, Lucian leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping lightly against the polished wood of his desk.
His sharp gaze flickered toward the glass window separating his office from Emily’s workspace.
There she was, seated staring at her phone, her expression a mix of confusion and frustration.
He sighed helplessly, pressed the remote button, and the blinds rolled down while he returned his attention to the work at hand.

~Emily’s Office~
Emily sat quietly on her seat, her phone clutched tightly in her hand, her expression a mix of frustration and helplessness.
She had a strange feeling about this dinner, but there was no way she could refuse the president’s order.
Emily’s thoughts raced as she analyzed the facts before her.
Surely, the aristocratic banquet in Cortland would definitely have the rich and powerful attend, right?
Now going with the President wouldn’t be just a simple trip.
Thinking up to this point, Emily pressed her temples lightly, a helpless sigh escaping her lips.
It’s no shame for her to admit that in this field there’s little to nothing she knew about being an assistant to the president; besides, she hadn’t served any president before.
Several options flashed through her thoughts;
Maybe I should go into his office to ask him details of the dinner party?
What are the things I should expect or probably do?
It’s said the president usually socializes with other business emperors during dinner… maybe he might give me a brief of some of the persons I might come across at the party.
Wait!
I guess he is too busy, he wouldn’t actually have the time to talk to me… a simple assistant; besides, that would definitely count as not knowing my job.
The more she thinks the more complicated it becomes.
At last, she decides to let go and focus her attention on getting herself prepared.
Hopefully, the night wouldn’t be overwhelming, or better still, she takes things as they come.
With this decision, Emily dropped her phone on her desk and decided to take a look around her office.
But just as she stood up, her phone dinged with a new notification.
She swiped her fingers across the phone, revealing a message from Bryan:
“A dress will be delivered to you at your friend’s place since you’re staying there today.
Be there by six in the evening for the stylist to attend to you.”
Emily’s lips parted slightly in surprise.
“A dress?”
“But the president said he will send a dress.” She replied immediately with confusion.
«Alright, if the company is delivering clothes, then the stylist will take care of your makeup.
Don’t reject the arrangement; your appearance matters to the Boss identity.»
“What does a loan shark boss know about appearance?
“Who in the business world will recognize him aside from the likes of my adoptive parents who would trade their life for more money to gamble away?” She scoffed at this thought.
“Maybe the appearance is certainly going to benefit the Sterling Group’s president… maybe not a waste.” She muttered.
Emily shrugged her shoulders and decided to continue with what she was doing.
It’s not like worrying would change anything.
After getting a good view of her office, her lips curled up.
“Perfect decorations.” She muttered.
Grabbing her phone from the desk again, she took a snapshot of the office’s exquisite background before updating with the caption “transferred to a new office…
may the future be bright.”
In Lucian’s office, his social media notification dinged, his brow raised as he clicked on it.
A smile crept up his lips at the caption.
“It would be bright,” he murmured.
The rest of the day went on peacefully for Emily, which was a great relief for her exhausted frame.
At the close of work, Emily was getting her items ready when her intercom rang.
Without thinking, she knew who the caller was—the President.
“Send in your residential address before you leave for the driver to pick you up by 7:30.” Lucian’s steady voice filtered over the phone.
Emily’s heart panicked.
“Her address?”
Wasn’t it enough that she was suddenly assigned as the president’s assistant?
Now he wanted to know where she lives too?
What now happens in the future when she leaves Melissa’s home?
She mused.
“Did you hear me?” Lucian asked, snapping her out of her thoughts.
Emily rubbed her brows.
“Yes Sir,” she muttered, almost inaudible.
Exhausted and worn out, she sighed as she dropped the intercom.
She had been mentally preparing herself for the dinner, but now that the time was approaching, a wave of unease settled over her again.
She rubbed her temples, trying to push away the fatigue and unease threatening to swallow her whole.
Besides, it’s not profitable to argue; it would do her no good, and this job… is a life line, she couldn’t afford to lose.
She pulled open her drawer, picked a pen and a piece of paper; she scribbled out Melissa’s address.
She stared at the address for a while and exhaled sharply before she made her way towards Lucian’s office.
Lucian didn’t bother looking up.
“You can drop it on the desk.” He said as he signed a document.
Watching him so serious, cold, and domineering, Emily’s heart thumped, her cheeks heating up, though she dare not admit that she finds him attractive.
Besides, she has already lost the right to admire another man even before she was ready to have a boyfriend.
“What a hard life.” She muttered to herself.
She placed the piece of paper on the desk and turned around to leave when his voice halted her mid-step.
“Have this.” He said, holding out a piece of paper to her.
“I don’t like people working under me to give me excuses.
If anything, my assistant rings me up.”
Emily’s breath caught, she blinked, her gaze locked at his outstretched hand and a piece of paper with his number.
“Wait, am I now amongst the few to have the President’s number?”
“Are you just going to stand there to stare at me, or take this from me?” Lucian’s cold voice pierced through the silence of the room.
“I…I’m.m… sorry… sir.” Emily stuttered while she hurriedly took the piece of paper from him and bolted towards the door.
“Be ready on time, I dislike lateness.” Lucian said, his gaze narrowed at the fleeing lady.
His lips curled up; he didn’t want to imagine, but it seems her gaze has been of admiration, though she tried to conceal it.
Emily returned to her office and slumped into her seat, her cheeks heating up, her heart racing several kilometers.
She can’t believe she had stared at him that long.
She felt ashamed.
“Why let his charm hold you at ransom, Emily?”
“That’s your boss, the cold and heartless president of the Sterling Group.”
He had no interest in ladies, a clear reason why he had no female working beside him.
He is definitely not your class, and more importantly, you have lost that right of admiring another man.
Emily, you are married.
Don’t be a scum.” She continually chided herself, hopeful it would help her not to repeat the same mistake another day.
“Wait!
Did he just say… be ready on time, I dislike lateness.” Emily let a humourless chuckle.
“So commanding.” She murmured under her breath.
“Yet, he was dragging another to a party against her will?”
“Aren’t you being overly righteous too?” She grumbled, barely inaudible… she needs this job, and whatever dissatisfaction, she bears it silently.
She shook her head, grabbing her things, and she quickly exited the office.
