It was well past midnight when Jack Stacy finally drove back into downtown Chicago.

The city stretched beneath the night in endless lines of headlights and glowing windows, still alive despite the late hour.

Jack parked the black Mercedes-AMG GT beneath Ivanka Anderson’s apartment building and reached for the door.Full novel: Chicago P.D.: Super Cop System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Before he could get out, his phone lit up with a new message.

I’m waiting for you.

A tired smile appeared on Jack’s face.

He slipped the phone into his pocket, locked the Mercedes and headed inside.

The elevator climbed toward Ivanka’s floor while Jack studied his reflection in the mirrored wall.

Dark circles had formed beneath his eyes, fresh stubble covered his jaw and exhaustion pulled slightly at his shoulders after everything that had happened at Warehouse 12.

Ivanka’s apartment door was already unlocked when he arrived.

Only a floor lamp illuminated the living room, spreading warm light across the hardwood floor while the familiar scent of lavender mixed with something sweet from the kitchen.

“Jack, I’m in here,” Ivanka called.

Jack removed his coat and headed toward the kitchen.

Ivanka stood near the stove in a silk robe while slowly stirring a small saucepan.

She glanced over her shoulder and immediately noticed how exhausted he looked.

“Hot chocolate with a little brandy.

You look like you need something warmer than coffee tonight.”

Jack walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist.

“How do you always know?”

“I’m still your psychologist.” Ivanka turned in his arms and gave him a soft smile.

“Even if our relationship has become considerably less professional.”

Jack laughed quietly before taking a seat at the kitchen island.

Ivanka poured the hot chocolate into a mug and placed it in front of him, then sat across the counter with her own cup.

The warmth spread through Jack’s hands as he held the ceramic mug.

Ivanka watched him for several seconds before asking, “Do you want to talk about what happened?”

“Not much to tell.” Jack took a drink.

“A man had Hank’s son tied up and was about to shoot him.

I fired before he could.”

Ivanka studied his face but didn’t press him.

“You did what you had to do.”

Jack nodded.

“I trust you,” she added quietly.

They sat together without speaking for a while.

The distant hum of Chicago and an occasional siren drifting up from the street were the only sounds inside the apartment.

Jack finished the last of the hot chocolate and felt the small amount of brandy warming his stomach.

“I’m taking a shower.

If I stay on this stool any longer I’m probably falling asleep here.”

“Go.” Ivanka smiled.

“I left clean towels in the bathroom and the hot water is already running.”

Jack entered the bathroom and let the heat wash away some of the tension from his muscles.

He closed his eyes for several minutes before suddenly remembering something important.

He still had two unopened Treasure Chests.

The first was the Bronze Treasure Chest from the Neil Vance and Jeffrey Baker serial-predator case.

The second was the Black Iron Treasure Chest he had received only hours earlier after neutralizing Joe Catalano.

Jack opened his eyes and summoned the system interface.

[Open Bronze Treasure Chest?]

“Yes.”

The chest disappeared in a flash of system light.

[Obtained: Special Item — Spatial Anchor Device.]

[Spatial Anchor Device: Creates a portable storage space of up to 10 cubic meters.

Time within the space remains relatively static.

Only inanimate objects may be stored.]

[An access anchor must be selected.

Once established, the anchor cannot be changed.]

Jack sat upright.

“Spatial storage?”

For the first time since receiving the system, a reward felt less like an enhanced human ability and more like something straight out of science fiction.

Ten cubic meters of private storage that nobody else could see or access had possibilities far beyond carrying ordinary equipment.

The system displayed another prompt.

[Select access anchor.]

Jack looked down at himself before settling on the most convenient choice.

“My right hand.”

[Anchor confirmed.]

[Portable Storage Space: 10 cubic meters.]

[Storage: Touch an inanimate object and mentally command storage.]

[Retrieval: Stored objects may be retrieved through thought.]

Jack stared at the message for several seconds before looking toward a small storage cabinet against the bathroom wall.

He stood and placed his right hand against it.

“Store.”

The cabinet vanished instantly.

Jack froze.

There had been no flash, distortion or gradual disappearance.

One moment the cabinet existed and the next only marks on the floor showed where it had been standing.

“That’s insane.”

Jack concentrated again and mentally called the cabinet back.

It reappeared exactly where it had been.

The same scratches remained on the door and every item inside looked untouched.

Jack opened it to make sure before testing the ability with several smaller objects.

A towel disappeared.

Then the soap.

Then a toothbrush.

Jack returned each item a few seconds later without any difficulty.

The ability was extraordinary.

He could carry emergency gear without adding weight, secure important objects where nobody could physically reach them and keep equipment available almost instantly.

Jack could already imagine dozens of uses during surveillance, searches and tactical operations.

He finally stopped experimenting and looked toward his last unopened reward.

[Open Black Iron Treasure Chest?]

“Open it.”

The second chest disappeared.

[Obtained: Primary Talent — Super Smell Lv.1.]

[Super Smell Lv.1: Olfactory sensitivity may be voluntarily increased up to 10× normal human sensitivity.

User can distinguish more than 3,000 scent profiles, track scent sources and memorize individual odors.]

Jack raised an eyebrow.

Another unusual ability.

He activated it.

The world changed almost immediately.

What had previously been a clean bathroom with the faint smell of soap and shampoo suddenly became dozens of overlapping layers.

Jack could distinguish the disinfectant used on the tiles, moisture deep in the drain, metal from the plumbing and traces of detergent left on the towels.

Even scents drifting in from the city became noticeable.

Vehicle exhaust.

Food from late-night restaurants.

Rainwater evaporating from concrete.

Cleaning chemicals from somewhere outside the apartment.

Then he caught Ivanka’s scent from beyond the bathroom.

Lavender oil, shampoo, hot chocolate and the faint trace of brandy were all distinct rather than blending together.

Beneath those familiar smells was Ivanka’s own unique scent profile which Jack realized he could probably recognize again even inside a crowd.

The sudden flood of information became overwhelming.

Jack immediately reduced the sensitivity.

“Okay.

Ten times normal might be too much indoors.”

He was still adjusting when another system notification appeared.

[Compatible abilities detected.]

[Primary Talent: Super Smell Lv.1.]

[Skill: Hearing Positioning Lv.1.]

Jack’s expression changed.

[Fusion available.]

[Estimated success rate: 75%.]

[Fusion failure may result in ability degradation.]

“Fusion?”

Jack considered it for only a few seconds.

Both abilities were useful on their own, but the system clearly believed they could produce something stronger together.

Even if there was risk involved, a seventy-five percent success rate was high enough for him to gamble.

“Fuse.”

[Ability fusion initiated…]

Several seconds passed.

Then the system sounded again.

[Fusion successful.]

Jack immediately focused on the new notification.

[Obtained: Extraordinary Skill — Life Radar Lv.1.]

[Life Radar Lv.1: Creates a three-dimensional spatial perception centered on the user within a 50-meter radius.

Can perceive the location, approximate size, basic form, movement speed and direction of living organisms.

Perception accuracy decreases with distance.]

[Olfactory identification and scent discrimination retained as part of fused sensory perception.]

Jack stared at the description.

“Extraordinary Skill?”

This was the first time the system had given him something that sounded genuinely beyond enhanced human limits.

Jack closed his eyes and activated Life Radar Lv.1.

His perception expanded outward.

At first it felt chaotic.

Dozens of living signals appeared in his awareness from different directions and distances.

Tiny creatures inside the building mixed with people in neighboring apartments, pedestrians on the sidewalk and larger concentrations of life farther away.

His brain quickly began sorting the information.

The apartment around him took shape as a strange three-dimensional map without any actual visual image.

Walls remained physically invisible to him, yet he could sense where living things existed beyond them and how they were moving.

Ivanka was in the living room.

Jack could sense her position and basic outline as she moved around the apartment.

Small life signals appeared near the kitchen and another animal-sized presence was curled up near a window in the neighboring unit.

Farther away were pedestrians moving along the sidewalk.

A patrol car passed along the street below with two human-shaped signals moving together inside the vehicle.

Jack slowly opened his eyes.

The information didn’t disappear.

“This is ridiculous.”

He finally understood why the system classified it as an Extraordinary Skill.

In police work, knowing how many people were inside a building before entering could completely change an operation.

Hostage situations, raids, searches and ambushes would all become dramatically safer if he could determine where living targets were moving without having direct line of sight.

The fused scent ability made it even more useful.

If Jack already knew someone’s scent profile, he might eventually be able to separate that person from other signals inside the detection area.

With training, Life Radar could become one of the most valuable abilities the system had ever given him.

Jack focused toward the living room.

Ivanka was moving.

Her signal approached the bathroom.

Jack could sense her walking through the apartment before stopping briefly outside.

A moment later the nearby shower started running and her position shifted again.

Jack immediately reduced his focus.

The ability was powerful enough to become intrusive if he used it carelessly.

He deactivated Life Radar.

Some abilities required more than practice.

They required boundaries.

A few minutes later Ivanka entered the bathroom and found Jack relaxing in the hot water with his eyes closed.

“You’ve been in here long enough that I was starting to think you fell asleep.”

Jack opened his eyes.

“Just resting.”

Ivanka smiled as she came closer.

“You looked like you needed it.”

She joined him in the warmth and slipped her arms around his neck.

Jack no longer had the strange spatial map filling his thoughts and instead let himself focus on ordinary things—the hot water, the lavender scent around her and the simple relief of finally being home.

“What were you thinking about so seriously?” Ivanka asked.

“Nothing important.” Jack smiled.

“Just enjoying the quiet.”

Ivanka studied him as though she knew there was more to the answer, but she chose not to push.

Instead she leaned closer and kissed him.

Jack answered without hesitation.

What began gently soon carried more emotion than either of them had expected.

The last few days had brought murder investigations, gunfire, family secrets and dangers neither of them could easily explain away.

For a little while neither wanted to think about any of it.

Steam covered the bathroom mirror while the city continued moving outside Ivanka’s windows.

When Jack finally stood and carried her out of the bathroom, Ivanka laughed softly and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.

They left a trail of water toward the bedroom.

Only the bedside lamp remained on when they entered.

Jack set Ivanka down gently and looked at her for a moment.

Whatever happened next belonged only to the two of them, far removed from Hank’s problems, Brian Anderson’s shadow and the endless violence waiting beyond the apartment walls.

The bedroom door closed behind them.
