To kill a mortal, one must pierce the heart. To kill a god, one must poison the dream.

Valar’s massive, mutated arm plunged elbow-deep through the thick, translucent membrane of the colossal Chrysalis. The raw, amniotic Black Ichor inside the sac was millions of times more concentrated than the Kara Irin River. It instantly began to boil against his obsidian flesh, attempting to dissolve his arm down to the bone. But Valar was no longer fighting the rot; he had become it.

His severed veins pulsed with absolute, spiteful fury. The chaotic, glowing mixture of corrupted Vesperian gold and violent, Ichor-tainted purple poured directly into the incubating entity’s life support system.Full novel: Children of the Extinguished Sun — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It was a genetic sabotage on a cosmic scale.

The incubating god of Goreth-Kul had spent a millennium perfectly assimilating the biology of Vaelgard, expecting a pure, uniform delivery of psychic devotion and unresisting biomass. It was not prepared for Valar. His blood was a violent, impossible paradox—the immovable, unyielding density of a Gargan, the acoustic perfection of a Vesperian, the chaotic mutative radiation of an unsealed anomaly, and above all, the stubborn, deeply rooted defiance of a Human.

It was a virus of individuality injected straight into a hive-mind.

The reaction was instantaneous and cataclysmic.

The massive, formless shadow shifting within the cathedral-sized Chrysalis suddenly froze. The rhythmic, subterranean heartbeat that had been driving the toxic rivers of the world skipped, fluttered, and then violently convulsed.

A psychic shriek of absolute, unadulterated cosmic agony detonated within the cavern.

It was not a sound. It was a pressure wave that shattered the very concept of silence. Ada and Zey, despite their Vesperian acoustic discipline, collapsed to their knees, blood pouring from their ears and noses as their neural pathways were overloaded. Bruce, the immovable pureblood giant, was thrown flat against the fleshy floor, his gauntleted hands clutching his head as the psychic shockwave threatened to liquefy his brain.

Miles above them, on the rim of the crater, the apocalypse reversed its course.

The million Aethel zealots, united in a fanatical, chanting trance, were connected to the entity through their mass resonance. They were expecting the glorious, euphoric light of ascension. Instead, Valar’s poisoned blood flowed backward through the psychic tether.

The fanatical chanting ceased in a single, terrifying fraction of a second. It was replaced by the sound of a million minds simultaneously breaking. The psychic backlash of the dying god lobotomized the Crusade’s vanguard. Inquisitors dropped their scythes, dropping to the ash in catatonic shock. Ironclads ripped their own helmets off, screaming in endless, directionless terror as the delusion of their holy salvation was ripped away, leaving only the cold, rotting reality of the abyss. The Crusade did not break; it shattered into a million isolated fragments of madness.

Inside the core, the Chrysalis was dying.

The blinding violet luminescence of the amniotic fluid rapidly began to curdle, turning a sickly, necrotic gray. The colossal, fleshy tendrils suspending the sac from the cavern ceiling began to wither and snap, dropping massive chunks of petrified biomatter into the boiling lake below.

But the god was not going to die alone.

The fleshy membrane of the Chrysalis violently contracted, clamping around Valar’s submerged arm with the crushing force of a tectonic plate.

IF I CANNOT HATCH, YOU WILL BURN WITH THE SHELL.

The dying entity directed the entirety of its fading cosmic fury directly into Valar’s mind. The psychic gravity attempted to rip his consciousness from his body, to drag him down into the eternal, lightless void of the dead star it had fallen from.

Valar’s obsidian skin began to crack. The Stage IV mutation was destabilizing. His amber eyes flickered, the Vesperian gold fighting a losing battle against the overwhelming, suffocating gray of the dying god's rot. He was anchored to the Chrysalis, his feet sinking deep into the dissolving floor of the cavern.

"Valar!"

A voice cut through the cosmic roar. It was small, frail, and entirely mortal.

Fuchsia had dragged herself out from behind the calcified outcropping. Her human biology was failing, the purple rot creeping up her neck, her breathing reduced to shallow, agonizing gasps. But she was crawling toward him, her good hand reaching out through the boiling toxic steam.

She was the anchor. The single, fragile tether to the world he was dying to save.

Valar’s fangs bared in a terrifying, feral snarl. He did not pull away from the god; he pushed back.

Channeling the absolute maximum output of Vector Resonance into his trapped arm, Valar essentially turned his own fist into a gravitational singularity. The localized gravity warped so violently that the space around his arm physically shattered.

With a roar that shook the very bedrock of Vaelgard, Valar ripped his arm free.

The kinetic displacement completely tore the front of the Chrysalis open. A tidal wave of gray, inert sludge poured out of the ruined sac, washing over the cavern floor. The formless shadow within dissolved into ash, its cosmic presence abruptly and permanently erased from the world.

The god was dead. But the tomb was collapsing.

Without the entity's Vector Resonance to maintain the impossible physics of the crater, the massive subterranean cavern began to cave in. The ceiling groaned, raining down chunks of rock the size of fortresses. The fleshy floor was rapidly calcifying, turning into brittle, dead stone.

Valar collapsed onto his hands and knees, the massive output of energy finally breaking him. The terrifying obsidian shell of his Stage IV mutation began to flake away like burnt paper, revealing his pale, heavily scarred flesh beneath. The black Ichor veins remained, permanently etched into his skin, but the violent violet glow was gone. It was just dead, cold ash in his veins.

"We need to move!" Bruce roared, scrambling to his feet. The giant Gargan didn't hesitate. He sprinted through the receding, gray sludge, scooped Fuchsia up in one massive arm, and grabbed Valar by the harness of his torn undershirt with the other, hauling the towering hybrid to his feet.

"The structural integrity of the crater is failing!" Ada shouted, wiping the blood from her face as she and Zey darted toward the only stable tunnel leading back toward the Kara Irin riverbed. "The entire gorge is going to implode!"

"Then run!" Bruce bellowed, practically carrying Valar as they sprinted toward the exit.

Behind them, the cathedral-sized Chrysalis crashed to the floor, instantly crushing beneath millions of tons of collapsing bedrock. The Kara Irin waterfall, no longer fed by the heartbeat of the incubator, slowed to a trickle of toxic mud and then ceased entirely.

They ran blindly through the collapsing dark. Valar forced his legs to move, leaning heavily on the pureblood giant. Every step was pure agony, his body completely drained, his genetics permanently scarred by the impossible threshold he had crossed.

But as they reached the steep, jagged incline that led back up toward the Morkar Forests, and the deafening roar of the collapsing core echoed far below them, Valar looked at the unconscious girl cradled safely in Bruce's arm.

The purple rot on her neck was already fading. The toxic radiation of the core was dissipating.

They had killed the god. The sun was still extinguished, and Vaelgard was still a broken, bleeding world. But the incubator was destroyed. The world was theirs to rebuild, to fight over, and to reclaim from the ashes.

The Twilight Age was over. The Age of the Anomaly had begun.
