The subterranean maintenance bays beneath the Academy’s Grand Arena were a chaotic, deafening madhouse.

Hundreds of lower-tier mechanics scrambled like ants around massive, hydraulic lift-platforms. The air was thick with the smell of vaporized coolant, scorched plasma coils, and the sweat of logistics cadets desperately trying to patch Elite armor between rounds.

Chen Xi sat on an overturned crate in Bay 14, a pneumatic wrench resting lazily in his lap. He wore his standard-issue grey jumpsuit, complete with a fresh smudge of engine grease across his jawline to complete the illusion. To the frantic cadets running past him, he looked like a burnt-out lower-level mechanic taking an unauthorized break.Full novel: Chronicles of the Rebuild — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

In reality, he was conducting a live-fire weapons test.

Above them, the cheers of eighty thousand spectators shook the ferrocrete ceiling. The Elite Combat Qualifiers were in full swing.

"The acoustic dampeners in this bay are woefully inadequate," Sylphe complained in his mind. She was in her digital form, floating just out of sight behind a heavy tool rack. "And the engineering happening around us is offensive. The cadet three yards to your left just patched a Class-2 plasma vent with basic thermal tape. When that Elite fires his weapon, his arm is going to melt."

"Not our problem, Sylphe," Chen Xi murmured sub-vocally, his eyes locked onto the massive, high-definition broadcast monitor bolted to the bay wall. "Just monitor the structural integrity of the Aether-Pulse Eclipse. We need to know if the tungsten chassis can handle the gravity-inversion feedback loop under combat stress."

"Biometrics synced. Weapon telemetry active," Sylphe confirmed, her tone snapping into sharp, analytical focus. "Match 14 is commencing."

The broadcast monitor shifted, showing the colossal, sun-drenched sands of the main arena. The announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers.

"Next up! A highly anticipated clash in the C-Block brackets! Representing the Aegis Faction, the unbreakable fortress, Rank-A Earth Esper... Marcus Vane!"

The crowd roared as a massive, hulking cadet stepped onto the sand. Marcus Vane was built like a heavily armored transport rover. He wore thick, interlocking kinetic-plate armor and carried a massive, hexagonal tower shield that hummed with a deep, orange plasma field.

"And his opponent! Representing the independent competitors, Rank-A Fighter... Lin Yuxuan!"

Lin Yuxuan stepped out of the shadow of the portcullis. She looked flawless, her white and silver uniform immaculate. But what immediately drew the eyes of every corporate scout, instructor, and cadet in the arena were the weapons in her hands.

She held the two matte-black, unassuming tonfas. They didn't glow with flashy neon energy. They didn't crackle with raw plasma. To the uneducated eye, she was walking into a fight against a walking tank holding two pieces of plain iron pipe.

"Is she insane?" a logistics cadet muttered, stopping next to Chen Xi to stare at the monitor. "Marcus’s Aegis Shield can deflect a point-blank Gauss cannon shot. She can't break that with blunt force."

Chen Xi didn't respond. He just watched.

In the arena, the starting klaxon blared.

Marcus Vane didn't charge. As a defensive Esper, his strategy was to let his opponents exhaust their Qi against his shield before crushing them. He slammed the bottom of his tower shield into the sand. A thick, semi-transparent wall of orange, Earth-attribute Qi erupted, forming an impenetrable dome around him.

"Come on, Lin!" Marcus taunted, his voice echoing through the arena mics. "Break your hands on my wall!"

Lin Yuxuan didn't say a word. Her crimson eyes locked onto the glowing orange dome. She exhaled a long breath, and Chen Xi watched on the telemetry feed as she channeled her Rank-A Fighter Qi down her arms and into the grips of the tonfas.

"Gravity coils engaged," Sylphe reported, her voice buzzing with excitement. "Aether-core stabilized. Weapon mass has effectively reached zero."

Yuxuan exploded forward. She crossed the thirty yards of sand in a fraction of a second, moving with terrifying, unhindered speed. She didn't try to flank the shield. She leaped directly into the air, bringing her right arm back.

She swung the right tonfa in a devastating downward arc, aiming dead center at the plasma dome.

The moment the matte-black metal made contact with the glowing orange Qi field, the micro-gravity coils within the weapon inverted.

The tonfa didn't just hit the shield. It struck with the sudden, localized mass of a four-ton boulder moving at terminal velocity.

BOOOOOOM!

The sound wasn't a metallic clang. It was a deafening, thunderous shockwave that visibly warped the air across the arena. The impact cratered the sand beneath Marcus Vane’s feet in a twenty-foot radius.

The "impenetrable" orange Qi dome didn't just crack. It shattered like cheap glass, exploding into a shower of harmless sparks.

Marcus Vane’s eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing horror as the sheer kinetic feedback traveled down his tower shield, violently dislocating his left shoulder. He stumbled backward, his shield dropping to the sand.

The entire arena of eighty thousand people went dead silent.

Down in the maintenance bay, the cadet standing next to Chen Xi dropped his hydro-spanner, his mouth hanging open. "What... what was that?"

"Physics," Chen Xi whispered to himself, a cold, satisfied smile touching his lips.

"Weapon integrity at 99.8%," Sylphe practically cheered in his mind. "The Aether-core absorbed the kinetic rebound perfectly! Chen Xi, it’s a masterpiece!"

In the arena, Yuxuan wasn't finished. She landed gracefully in the sand, spinning the tonfas with effortless, terrifying speed. She looked at the terrified, unarmed Marcus Vane.

She didn't press the attack. Instead, to the absolute bewilderment of the crowd, she brought the two handles of her weapons together.

CLACK.

The magnetic locks engaged. The two short weapons seamlessly fused. The violet Aether-lines hidden within the seams of the tungsten flared to life, casting a sinister, beautiful glow over the sand. It was no longer a pair of tonfas; it was a brutal, two-meter-long heavy halberd.

Marcus Vane realized he was about to die.

"I yield!" Marcus screamed, throwing his good hand into the air, frantically backpedaling. "I yield! Proctors, stop the match!"

The automated proctor drones instantly swooped down, flashing red lights, signaling the end of the match. Total time elapsed: twelve seconds.

For a moment, Yuxuan stood there, the heavy halberd resting easily in her grip. She looked up toward the VIP boxes, where the corporate scouts were undoubtedly scrambling over each other to analyze the footage. Then, very subtly, she lowered the weapon and tilted her head—just a fraction of an inch—toward the grated floor of the arena, pointing directly toward the subterranean maintenance bays below.

It was a silent salute. An acknowledgment to the monster in the dark who had forged her victory.

The crowd finally erupted into absolute pandemonium.

Chen Xi leaned back on his crate, spinning the pneumatic wrench around his finger.

"Hey, cadet!" an angry voice barked. A senior logistics officer stormed up to Chen Xi, pointing a clipboard at him. "Stop watching the screens and get to Bay 19! The Titan Faction needs their servos realigned immediately!"

Chen Xi immediately dropped his cold, calculating demeanor, slouching his shoulders and letting a nervous, obedient expression wash over his face.

"Right away, sir. Sorry, sir," Chen Xi stammered, grabbing his toolbox and scurrying off toward Bay 19.

"Look at them ordering you around," Sylphe scoffed, highly offended on his behalf. "If they knew you designed the weapon that just broke the arena, that officer would be carrying your toolbox with his teeth."

Let them bark, Sylphe, Chen Xi replied, navigating the crowded, chaotic corridors. The louder Yuxuan shines in the light, the deeper our shadows become. By tonight, every Elite family will be tearing the city apart trying to find the 'master corporate engineer' who built the Eclipse.

He stepped into the greasy, dimly lit Bay 19, instantly identifying the micro-fractures in the Titan Faction's armor with his [Machine Empathy].

And while they look for a ghost, Chen Xi thought, picking up a welding torch, we are going to integrate the Synapse-Cowl and evolve.
